The Right Reverend Elisha Smith Thomas may be called the founder of St. John's. Soon after taking up residence in Salina as Episcopal Bishop Coadjutor of Kansas, he interested a number of prominent citizens in the idea of a military school and soon the school was incorporated. Late in 1887, the Rt. Rev. Thomas H. Vail, Bishop of the Diocese of Kansas, laid the cornerstone of the first building known as Vail Hall which stood until 1978 when it was destroyed by fire. St. John's Before 1948 fire St. John's After 1948 As we begin the new millennium, St. John's continues to train young men to harbor the cherished qualities of honesty, loyalty and duty. Our goal is to bring out the best in each cadet, which is evident in our commitment to one-on-one instruction and guidance. The school also continues its close and mutually beneficial relationship with the community of Salina. Home to three colleges and other post-secondary institutions, Salina is a progressive city that provides the benefits of a larger city with a small-town atmosphere. St. John's Military School is debt free and has an operating budget of $3 million. We are accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the Kansas Department of Education. We are members of the National Association of Episcopal Schools and the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States.

Fort Leonard Wood gets major facilities By Ida Burford
    Kansas City District
The Army's military police and chemical soldiers have new state-of-the-art training facilities in their new home, thanks to Kansas City District. In June 1995, the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission recommended moving the U.S. Army's Chemical School and Military Police School from Fort McClellan, Ala., to Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. To support this move, the two schools required new facilities. Kansas City District (KCD) managed construction. The MP Village will be used to train soldiers at the Military Police School in all aspects of police work. (U.S. Army Photo) Applied Instruction Facilities The Applied Instruction Facilities (AIF) project was designed by the Gossen-Livingston Architectural Engineering firm of Wichita, Kansas, and provides about 190,000 square feet of new facilities. Hensel Phelps Construction Company completed this $30 million project in March, more than two months ahead of schedule. The AIF project is really three projects on three sites to accommodate the training and storage needed by the Chemical and Military Police schools. The project includes an MP Village, Chemical Defense Training Facility (CDTF), and an addition to the post museum.

WICHITA, KANSAS CHOSEN AS SITE FOR THE AMERICAN OVERSEAS SCHOOLS HISTORICAL PARK, ARCHIVES AND MUSEUM LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. The City of Wichita, Kansas has been selected as the site of the American Overseas Schools Historical Park by the membership of the American Overseas Schools Historical Society (AOSHS) at its annual meeting in Minneapolis on July 11th. The Wichita site was selected through a process which included soliciting proposals from 14 selected metropolitan areas in the United States; followed by site visits by a nine member committee to the three cites best qualified to have the park in their area. "The City of Wichita was a clear choice in the site selection competition," said Dr. Tom Drysdale, American Overseas Schools Historical Society President and Archives Director. "The five-plus acre, downtown river front site made available by the City of Wichita in the heart of their outstanding 'Museums on the River' cultural district is superb. Additionally, the show of support from city government, Wichita State University, the Wichita Public School System and local business and industry has been very strong." "Wichita is very excited and honored to be selected as the home for the American Overseas Schools Historical Park. The park and museum will be a wonderful addition to the Museums on the River district, " said Wichita Mayor Bob Knight.

When the Germans settled on the Kansas high plains over a century ago, after homesteading a farm and establishing a church, the next priority was to build a schoolhouse. Located on the campus of Fort Hays State University is the original Plymouth Country Schoolhouse. This school was moved to the campus in the fall of 1977 from Russell County. Originally constructed in 1874, this schoolhouse was built from 3,000 quarried limestone blocks in the Russell County area. Subjects taught to the students ranging in age from five to 21 years were reading, penmanship, arithmetic, descriptive geography, physical geography, and physiology. Other subjects taught were U.S. history, declamation, drawing, algebra, and bookkeeping. Music was by singing familiar songs parents taught their children. During recess games played were baseball, follow-the-leader, marbles, leap frog, drop-the-handkerchief, spin-the-bottle, and tag. Each year enrollment increased with the highest number of enrollees being 59 and with all the subjects in 8 grades it became difficult to teach in a one-room school. By 1904 attendance dropped sharply and the school closed until 1912 when it was opened for one year. It was again closed until 1915 when it reopened and stayed active until 1936. The school was then closed permanently at the end of the school year for several reasons, mainly lack of students, but also due to the depression, dust storms and drought.

How to transform high-poverty, low-performing schools into high-performing schools is one of the most vexing questions facing educators today. The Louisiana Staff Development Council sought an answer to that question by exploring the role that professional development plays. Did you grow up in the Military? Do you have trouble answering the question "where are you from?" Then you've come to the right place! The Military-Brats Registry offers you a way to find your friends and a way for them to find you. There is no cost to register your information here, and no cost to search or contact your friends once registered (and opted-in to our occasional news and events mailings). If you have not registered, do so today! DoDDS teachers and family members are welcome also. The Military-Brats Registry was created and is maintained by Marc Curtis
This site was created out of my own need to locate my long lost friends from Ft Bliss, Texas in 1960-61. I knew that others must be seeking their Military Brat friends too, so the Military-Brats Registry was developed in 1997 as a free resource to help everyone. The site is supported by advertisers (please visit them!), by the sale of items in the Brat Store, and by subscriptions and donations. The Military-Brats Registry is not associated with any government agency.
The Military-Brats Registry has a firm commitment to the American Overseas Schools Historical Society and Archives. We have developed a program that donates a portion of the sales of some items in the Brat Store to AOSHS to support their efforts in building a museum in Wichita, Kansas for the memorabilia of overseas and stateside schools which were attended by Military Brats.
