INTRODUCTION Welcome my fellow geographers! With vast improvements and technological advances on the information superhighway, it has become difficult to track down information. This page is designed to help eliminate confusion by serving as a central location for linking you to various geography web pages. I will first briefly introduce myself and discuss my current research interests. If you are interested in learning a new topic, I have posted links from various branches of geography and academic journals. For those who are looking for government agency websites or ways to download census and GIS data there are plenty of links to choose from. If you are looking for daily news or current events, there are several links posted. At last, for those who are interested in looking for jobs in geography there are links posted to assist you with your search.

    Abbreviation:
KS Kansas is derived from the Siouan Kansa or Kaw, meaning "people of the south wind," who lived south of the settlements of the northern Great Plains. It was granted statehood in 1861, becoming the 34th state in the US. Kansas is located equidistant from the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean. The geographic center of Northamerica is located in Osborne County. This spot is used as the central reference point for all maps produced by the government. Kansas leads the states in wheat production. In early summer, the vast wheat fields on the state's prairies look like golden seas of grain. One of Kansas' most famous towns is Dodge City, the Cowboy Capital of the World. Kansas has many reminders of its colorful past. One can still see the ruts made by covered wagons on the Santa Fe Trail. Tourists can visit the old forts that served as bases for United States cavalry campaigns against Native American tribes and a variety of local museums, showing the exciting days of cattle drives and gunslingers.

Thomas County lies entirely within the area designated by Fenneman (1931) as the High Plains section of the Great Plains physiographic province. The county consists of nearly flat to gently rolling uplands broken by relatively shallow valleys. The upland-plains surface generally slopes eastward at a rate of somewhat more than 12 feet to the mile. The lowest point in the county is along the valley of Prairie Dog creek where that stream crosses the Sheridan county line, and has an altitude of about 2,845 feet. The highest area in the county is along the Sherman county line south of Brewster where the upland surface attains an altitude of as much as 3,375 feet. Although the general region of which Thomas County is a part is called the High Plains, it has some of the features of a plateauthat is, it is essentially a flat upland surface that stands distinctly above the surrounding regions. The High Plains are terminated eastward in parts of central Kansas by an escarpment produced by the eroded edge of the Fort Hays limestone member of the Niobrara chalk. At some places a second east-facing escarpment, produced by the loosely cemented conglomerates of the Ogallala formation, occurs to the west of the outcrop of the Fort Hays. A less distinct west-facing escarpment, also formed by the eroded edge of the Ogallala formation, can be seen due west of Thomas County in eastern Colorado. South of Thomas County the High Plains upland stands above the dissected area comprising the Smoky Hill valley.

The 14th largest state in the country, Kansas has a huge surface area - a total of more than 50 million acres. Look for the eleven different regions on the map:
  • Ozark Plateau Cherokee Lowlands Osage Cuesta Glaciated Region Flint Hills Smoky Hills High Plains Arkansas River Lowlands Red Hills Wellington-McPherson Lowlands

    The Name Game
Match the names of Kansas towns with their geographical features. A Ride with the Wind
"Everybody thinks Kansas is flat: it's not flat at all," said Jason Cole about his bicycle ride across Kansas last summer. Preserving the Prairie Kansas harbors one of the our country's most precious natural resources - native prairie. The Flint Hills region is one of the few remaining locations in the United States where great stretches of unplowed grassland remain.

American Cities THE CENTRAL CITY THE SUBURBS THE NEW URBANISM ASSESSING THE AMERICAN CITY We're coming, finally, to a sequence of four portraits of the world's humanized landscapes. That's what human geography is finally about. You could say that we're looking at pattern now, rather than process. Or you could say that we're looking at the visible consequences of all the activities we've been tracing. I want to begin with American cities, because they're the places we know best. What comes to mind with this topic? One thing is downtown, that cluster of skyscrapers that immigrants first saw from the decks of liners coming into New York's harbor. Now we mostly see downtown through a car or plane window, but it still grabs our attention. Around it, there is the huge penumbra of suburbia: freeways, arterial streets, curvilinear residential streets, commercial strips, a carpet of houses with backyard pools, and a scattering of bigger buildingsshopping centerss, college campuses, hospitals, stadiums, warehouses, and factories. Those are the tangibles. There's something else, too. Maybe it's excitement. Maybe it's fear. Maybe it's a sense of a world with nothing worth doing or seeing. Maybe it's some of each.

I am originally an Easterner, having been born in New Jersey and lived much of my early life in Pennsylvania (outside of Philadelphia). I was a "Navy Brat" and thus lived in several different places while growing up. During that time I lived in Japan, as well as several States. I moved to Kansas in 1970 to teach at the University of Kansas and have mostly lived and taught in the Midwest since then, teaching at Wisconsin (Madison as well as UNI). Outside of my profession, I am an avid golfer, eater and cook, I follow politics and sports. I enjoy reading, especially history, politics, spy and detective novels, and natural science. My wife and I have fallen in love with Scotland and we spend our summers in North Berwick where we belong to two wonderful golf clubs. Source: U.S. Geological Survey, Dept. of the Interior There is no generally accepted definition of geographic center and no uniform method for determining it.
