    Level: graduate students
Course Project/Description: This class is designed to introduce graduate students to "the basic purposes and methods of scholarly inquiry, from both journalistic and scholarly perspectives." Although a library session with the Journalism bibliographer is already built in to the course structure, the aim of this project is to connect that session more closely to student research by following it up with a preliminary research focus assignment using some of the tools introduced in the session. The bibliographer will also play a larger role in the research project by sitting in on mid-semester roundtable discussions at which students share information on their research progress. The overall goal for the course is to "increase the quality of help and guidance in following a research thread and developing a research focus." The expansion of the bibliographer's role towards more substantive participation in the research process is designed to support this goal.

Electronic Databases
Subject Specific Databases
UM does not subscribe to specific journalism databases; however, please see Print Materials for Communication Abstracts and Journalism and Mass Communication Abstracts . These publications contain the same kind of information that a subject-specific database would contain.
For excellent news and article sources, see the databases listed below.
General or Related Databases
LexisNexis Academic
LexisNexis offers journalists several valuable research areas in one database. You can conduct legal, business, and news research; additionally, under the "Reference" search option you have the opportunity to search the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research's files for poll and survey data. This database is updated continually and contains both full-text articles and abstracts.
SEARCH TIP: When performing a News search, it is highly recommended that you use the Guided News Search option. This way, you can chose the kind of news you want to search (General, U.S., World, News Wire, University, etc.), select a news source (varies depending on which kind of news you chose), and use LexisNexis's powerful search methods (click on "Help," then on "Finding Information" to find out how to use them).
Ethnic NewsWatch
It is important to consider all viewpoints of a newsworthy issue. Ethnic NewsWatch provides articles from an ethnically diverse perspective from newspapers, magazines, and journals. There are over 700,000 full-text articles from 200 titles and the database is updated monthly. It can be searched in English or Spanish.

HISTORY OF NEWS LIBRARIES
Video of News Libraries NEWS LIBRARY HISTORY Barbara P. Semonche The history of newspaper libraries is neither clear nor straightforward. It is a story about people, events and organizations interacting over a period of considerable time. For our purposes, we are attempting to tell the stories, with the help of on-the-scene accounts and retrospective recollections, of an exceptional period in our history when news organization leaders and their librarians came together to report and research current events. News library leaders, past and present, are listed in chronologies in the appendixes to this chapter. Included are charter members of the Newspaper Division (renamed the News Division in 1987) of the Special Libraries Association (SLA), News Division chairs, News Division bulletin editors, and News Division award honorees. By the time newspaper libraries appeared on the scene in the United States, the newspaper publishing industry was already well established. There was an interval of nearly two centuries between the inaugural (and only) edition of Publick Occurrences Both Forreign and Domestick , America's first newspaper in Boston in 1690, and the debut of newspaper libraries.
