"Our greatest resource is the skill and the vision and the wisdom of our people. If your education falters or fails, everything else that we attempt as a nation will fail. . . .Over half of all the Mexican-American children have less than eight years of school. How long can we pay that price?"
Lyndon Baines Johnson was born in Texas in 1908 and became the 36th president of the United States following the 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy . As a Senator in 1957, he helped pass the first national civil rights legislation since the Civil War. Among the legislation for which President Johnson is remembered is the War on Poverty program, the passage of many civil rights bills, and the increased involvement of U.S. troops in the Vietnam War. In 1967, President Johnson established the Inter-Agency Committee on Mexican American Affairs. President Johnson died in 1973. Lyndon Baines Johnson is featured in Episode 1 and Episode 3 of Chicano! History of the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement.

American President Lyndon Baines Johnson, 1908-1973
America's 36th President, Lyndon Baines Johnson, known throughout his political career as LBJ ascended to office as the grim successor to John F. Kennedy mere hours after the assassination of the beloved 35th President. Overshadowed by the legacy of a martyred leader and inheriting the Vietnam War, Johnson's accomplishments in the advancement of civil rights, space exploration and social support changed the America of the second half of the 20th century. Lyndon B. Johnson died of a sudden heart attack in 1973 at the age of 64. Born in Gillespie County, Texas on August 27th, 1908 Lyndon Baines Johnson was the first of 5 children of Sam Ealy Johnson, Jr. and his wife, Rebekah Baines. Despite prominent family backgrounds, Sam's family having founded Johnsonville Texas and Rebekah the college educated daughter of prominent statesman Joseph Baines, the Johnsons were poor. Sam Johnson had lost most of his money in speculation of cotton, and Lyndon was born in a 3-room frame house. Sam Johnson's fortunes gradually improved and he served as a member of the Texas state legislature.

Johnson's foreign policy, of course, remains best known for his handling of the Vietnam War. Throughout his presidency, he remained faithful to one basic goal: doing the minimum possible to ensure that South Vietnam did not become a Communist state. Unfortunately for the President, the "minimum possible" grew to dangerous extremes-U.S. troop totals, around 16,000 when Johnson entered the White House, peaked at 532,000 in early 1968. Johnson's policies brought the United States no closer to victory in Vietnam, but badly divided the liberal movement at home, paving the way for his decision not to run for reelection in 1968.

    Biography

Lyndon Baines Johnson, (1908-1973), 36th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES . Born far from the centers of power, he devoted his life to the art of politics and eventually reached the most powerful position in the world, the presidency. Earlier, as Senate floor leader of the DEMOCRATIC PARTY , he became one of the most important men in Washington. Frustrated in his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1960, Johnson settled for the vice presidency under John F. KENNEDY and contributed significantly to the ticket's victory that fall. For nearly three years he served as a loyal and unusually active lieutenant to the dynamic younger man who in 1960 had defeated his presidential aspirations and then selected him as a running mate. Then, as a result of the tragic assassination of President Kennedy, Johnson found himself occupying the White House. He quickly broke the legislative deadlock between president and CONGRESS and obtained enactment of major domestic measures proposed by his predecessor.

Lyndon B. Johnson (1908-1973) became 36th president of the United States less than two hours after the assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. His escalation of American involvement in the Vietnam War caused much national dissension. When World War II began in September, 1939, as a member of the House Naval Affairs Committee, Johnson helped plan a naval air training base, a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps, and ship building sites, all at Texas locations. During the 1940 election campaign, Johnson headed the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and in that same year, won reelection to the House. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese bombed the Pearl Harbor Naval Base in Hawaii, and the next day, Johnson became the first member of Congress to enter active duty, sworn in as a lieutenant commander stationed in New Zealand and Australia. General Douglas MacArthur ultimately decorated him with the Silver Star for gallantry in action while attacked by Japanese fighter planes during a flight over enemy territory. In the spring of 1942, while still overseas, Johnson's supporters entered him as candidate for reelection, and he won without opposition. In July 1942, Roosevelt recalled to Washington all congressmen serving in the armed forces. During the 1940s, Mrs. Johnson, an intelligent, ambitious woman, developed a profitable business venture while her husband occupied himself in public office and the war. With an inheritance from her parents she bought a failing radio station in Austin. In the years to come, the LBJ Company, Inc. grew to control several radio-television stations, a bank, and real estate holdings. Johnson served five successive full terms in the House. During this time he also studied at Georgetown University Law School. In 1948 and 1954 he was elected to the United States Senate, establishing himself as an effective and persuasive party leader. Accustomed to working 18 hours a day, he suffered a severe heart attack in the summer of 1955. But by the next session of Congress, five months later, he was back at work.

JOHNSON, LYNDON BAINES (1908-1973). Lyndon Baines Johnson, president of the United States, the eldest of five children of Samuel Ealy Johnson, Jr., and Rebekah Baines Johnson, qqv was born on August 27, 1908, on a farm in the Hill Country qv qv of Texas. During the four years he held the position he gained valuable contacts in Washington. On November 17, 1934, he met and married Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Taylor, daughter of Thomas Jefferson Taylor II, qv a prosperous planter and store owner in Marshall. Two daughters were born to the Johnsons, during the 1940s. Mrs. Johnson proved to be an effective political partner. Her business acumen was an important element in the success of the radio station that they acquired in Austin in 1943. Johnson's first important political position was as director of the National Youth Administration qv in Texas from 1935 to 1937. Construction of his system of roadside parks put young Texans to work and quietly introduced the participation of African Americans qv in some NYA programs. When the incumbent congressman of the Tenth Congressional District died in 1937, Johnson entered the race as a devoted supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal. He spent eleven years in the House and became intimately familiar with the legislative process. He was a supporter of Roosevelt's programs and policies and a close ally of majority leader (later speaker of the House) Sam Rayburn.

Gerald R. Ford's Remarks at the Harry Middleton Lecture, Lyndon Baines Johnson Library
February 7, 1997 Thank you very much, for that most generous introduction. This evening, I feel as if my cup runneth over. To begin with, it's always an honor to come to the Johnson Library. Long before he became my President, Lyndon Johnson was my friend and colleague. Our respective roles as party leaders ensured that he was also my frequent adversary and occasional critic. He was never my enemy. Those on both sides of the political aisle who worry, justifiably in my opinion, about the loss of civility in today's political arena might well profit from LBJ's admonition that "it's better to win a convert than a fight." Ladybird, it gives me special pleasure to renew our long and cherished friendship. I don't have to remind anyone in this room or in this state what a treasure she isso let me just say that Betty joins in sending you our love as well as our gratitude for your lifetime of service to America. Then there is Harry Middleton, for whom this lecture series is named.

He returned home in 1926. Between 1927 and 1930, Johnson attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College.
