Lyndon B. Johnson "A Great Society" for the American people and their fellow men elsewhere was the vision of Lyndon B. Johnson. In his first years of office he obtained passage of one of the most extensive legislative programs in the Nation's history. Maintaining collective security, he carried on the rapidly growing struggle to restrain Communist encroachment in Viet Nam. Johnson was born on August 27, 1908, in central Texas, not far from Johnson City, which his family had helped settle. He felt the pinch of rural poverty as he grew up, working his way through Southwest Texas State Teachers College; he learned compassion for the poverty of others when he taught students of Mexican descent. In 1937 he campaigned successfully for the House of Representatives on a New Deal platform, effectively aided by his wife, the former Claudia "Lady Bird" Taylor, whom he had married in 1934.

Lyndon Baines Johnson was born in Stonewall, Tex., on Aug. 27, 1908. On both sides of his family he had a political heritage mingled with a Baptist background of preachers and teachers. Both his father and his paternal grandfather served in the Texas House of Representatives. In 1935, Johnson became Texas administrator for the National Youth Administration. Two years later, he was elected to Congress as an all-out supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt, and served until 1949. He was the first member of Congress to enlist in the armed forces after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served in the navy in the Pacific and won a Silver Star. Johnson was elected to the Senate in 1948 after he had captured the Democratic nomination by only 87 votes. He was 40 years old. He became the Senate Democratic leader in 1953. A heart attack in 1955 threatened to end his political career, but he recovered fully and resumed his duties.

Born on August 27, 1908, into a poor family in the Texas hill country, Lyndon Johnson was an average student but also seemed a natural leader among his peers. In 1927, he entered Southwest Texas State Teachers College. A prominent student, Johnson worked his way through school, graduating in three years. Next he taught English in Houston. In 1932, Johnson went to Washington as a legislative assistant to Representative Richard Kleberg. Doing most of the work, he became quite versed in the ways of Washington. In 1937, he ran for Congress himself as a Roosevelt New Dealer. In 1941, he ran for the Senate in a special election and lost. But he retained his House seat and continued his rise to prominence among congressional Democrats. During the war, Johnson served for a few months in a non-combat position. In 1948, Johnson ran again for the Senate, defeating his Democratic primary opponent in a runoff by only 87 votes amid loud accusations of fraud. He easily won the general election in the fall. In the Senate, Johnson quietly but quickly rose to prominence. In 1952, he became the Democratic leader in the Senate. He has been recognized as one of the ablest parliamentarians in U.S. history. In 1960, he sought his party's nomination for president but had to settle for the vice presidential slot, behind John Kennedy. As vice president, Johnson seemed out of place, with little of significance reaching his desk. That changed radically when Kennedy's assassination thrust him into the Oval Office in 1963.

    Lyndon Johnson
36th President of the United States If two men agree on everything, you may be sure
that one of them is doing the thinking.
    Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ)
was born on August 27, 1908 in a farmhouse near the Central Texas town of Stonewall. Like three other Vice Presidents in United States history, he became chief executive upon the assassination of the President. In Johnson's long career in Washington no skill served him better than his ability to "operate" the system. One congressional associate said about young Lyndon Johnson, "Within a few months, he knew how to operate in Washington better than some who had been there for twenty years before him." At age 44, he was the youngest man either party had ever chosen as Senate leader. Skilled in the art of political give and take, Johnson would pave the way for legislation before it came to the Senate floor for a vote. His strong support for space exploration helped establish the Senate Aeronautical and Space Committee, and made him its first chairman. He sponsored the law that created the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1958. In 1961 Johnson was elected Vice President on the ticket with President John F. Kennedy

Caro The second installment in a projected four-volume biography of LBJ that opened with The Path to Power , Means of Ascent shines a harsh light on the early political years of one of America's most paradoxical presidents. The man who would later ram civil rights legislation through a reluctant Congress, and then be brought down by Vietnam, came out of a political swampCaro gives a graphic picture of the Texas democratic political machine at its most corrupt. The climax of the book is LBJ's election to the Senate in 1948, an election he won by 87 dubious votes out of almost a million. That vote arguably changed history. Johnson's opponent, Barry Goldwater, suggested that Social Security be made voluntary, the TVA be abolished, and that nuclear weapons be used in Vietnam. Goldwater also voted against the Civil Rights bill in 1964. This lost him a considerable amount of moderate Republican votes. Despite the fact that Johnson lost Southern votes for supporting civil rights, he still won by a landslide.
