Biography

Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), 3d PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES . As the author of the Declaration of Independence and the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, he is probably the most conspicuous champion of political and spiritual freedom in his country's history. He voiced the aspirations of the new nation in matchless phrase, and one may doubt if any other American has been so often quoted. As a public officiallegislator, diplomat, and executivehe served the province and commonwealth of Virginia and the young American republic almost 40 years. While his services as a Revolutionary patriot have beenhonored by his countrymen with only slight dissent, his later and more controversial political activities have been variously interpreted. Believing that the government was not being conducted in the spirit of 1776, he turned against the administration in WASHINGTON 's second term and remained in opposition during the presidency of John ADAMS . Jefferson, who was president from 1801 to 1809, was the acknowledged head of his political party, and his election to the highest office has been interpreted as a vindication of the right of political opposition. The Third President Of The United States
Thomas Jefferson
Term: 1801 - 1809
First Lady: Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson
Vice President: 1.) Aaron Burr 2.) George Clinton
1. Aaron Burr
(1756-1836), American politician and adventurer. Dynamic and ambitious, he built a strong political following and rose to the office of Vice President Of The United States (1801-1805). But he is remembered more for his duel with Alexander Hamilton, which resulted in the latter's death, and for his schemes of empire, which resulted in his trial and acquittal on charges of treason.
Burr was born in Newark, N.J., on Feb. 6, 1756. Of distinguished ancestry, he was the son of the Reverend Aaron Burr, the cofounder and second president of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), and Esther Edwards Burr, the daughter of the New England theologian Jonathan Edwards. Both parents died before he was three years old, and his early training was assumed by an uncle, the Reverend Timothy Edwards. A precocious youth who would rebel against authority throughout his life, Burr escaped the strict discipline of his uncle's home to enter Princeton as a sophomore in 1769 at the age of 13. Graduating with honors in 1772, he studied theology and then abandoned it for law, but he had not progressed far when the Revolutionary War changed his plans.
Burr served on Benedict Arnold's staff, where he met James Wilkinson, who was to figure in his later plans; he then served briefly with George Washington and later with Gen. Israel Putnam. In July 1777, as a lieutenant colonel, he took over command of a regiment. He fought in the Battle of Monmouth the next year and resigned because of ill health in 1779.

      ABOUT THE CENTER
The Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression is a unique organization, devoted solely to the defense of free expression in all its forms. While its charge is sharply focused, the Center's mission is broad. It is as concerned with the musician as with the mass media, with the painter as with the publisher, and as much with the sculptor as the editor. Located in Charlottesville,Virginia, the Center enjoys close ties to the University of Virginia , but is an autonomous, not-for-profit entity. Its independence is assured by an outstanding Board of Trustees . The Board's members reflect a broad spectrum of views, yet share a commitment to protecting the right of others to express views different from their own. Indeed, recognizing that threats to free expression come from all parts of the political spectrum, the Center maintains a nonpartisan stance in all that it does. Since its founding in 1990, the Center has fulfilled its mission through a wide range of programs in

History in Jefferson County I ngrained into the very fabric of the county is its much more noble beginnings. Jefferson County took the name of the third U.S. President, Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson The need for an organized local government began in the late 1850s when droves of gold-seeking settlers came West. In 1858, when gold was discovered in the Rocky Mountains, there were fewer than 200 settlers in the area. An influx of nearly 35,000 people arrived two years later, lured by the glitter of gold. The county was formally organized in 1861 by the Colorado Territorial Legislature.
    Alferd Packer,
alleged cannibal T he history of Jefferson County is rich in Western lore. The county was home to the original capital of the Colorado Territory and boasted gold diggers, cowboys and villains among its residents. The county takes its name from the third U.S. President, Thomas Jefferson, master statesman, architect and writer.
The Pikes Peak Gold Rush of the late 1850s brought the first flock of settlers to the county. Reports of gold in the streams along the Front Range enticed prospectors to the area, and soon after coal was discovered near Coal Creek. By 1859, enough people lived in the area to merit the establishment of Golden City as well as other long-vanished towns, such as Arapahoe City and Golden Gate City.

However, under the electoral system then prevailing neither Jefferson nor Burr could claim victory. The Constitution had provided no means for electors to distinguish between their choices for president and vice president, and both candidates had received the same number of votes. The choice between them was therefore made in the House of Representatives. Partly because of the influence of Hamilton, who distrusted Burr even more than he disliked Jefferson, the latter was chosen president and inaugurated on March 4, 1801.
