When to Go
... ciaodarling.com Dubbed the world's 'living art gallery,' Italy has more culture than you can shake a baton, paintbrush, quill or chisel at. Whether it's a broken pillar rising up through the linoleum floor of a train station or a baroque church overlooking a cracked antique pediment in the forum, history and culture surround you. Outside there are Etruscan tombs, Greek temples, Roman ruins, Moorish architecture and statue-filled baroque fountains to admire; inside, you can swoon to Roman sculptures, Byzantine mosaics, beatific Madonnas from Giotto to Titian, gargantuan baroque tombs and trompe l'oeil ceilings.
Writers from Virgil, Ovid, Horace, Livy and Cicero to Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, Ficino, Mirandola and Vasari all sprang from Italian loins. The Italians were inovative when it came to music, either, as they invented both the piano and our system of musical notation, as well as producing Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Verdi, Puccini, Bellini and Rossini. Cinema would not be the same without Italy's Marcello Mastroianni, Anna Magnani, Gina Lollobrigida, Sophia Loren and directors Luchino Visconti, Roberto Rossellini, Frederico Fellini, Michelangelo Antonioni and Bernardo Bertolucci. (see Great Italians)

Once upon a time when the fairy tales were told by the fireplace they were strictly connected with the popular belief in magic and witchcraft. Some religious ceremonies based on pagan rites that are still performed, are a mix of belief and superstition, Christian and pagan elements, archaic and modern ceremonies.
The tarantula hypnotic frantic dance supposedly provoked by the bite of a poisonous spider or better by violence and sexual frustration create a particularly involving atmosphere. In fact when the tamburine men play the "pizzica" ( the original version of tarantella) you feel inside yourself the unrestraining need to move and dance with the tarantula dancers.
Music is considered both sacred and therapeutic and recalls ancient Greek mythological figures such as Orpheus the loving husband and Dyonisus the god of wine.
In fact the Byzantine ecclesiastical organization issued by Emperor Niceforo Foca in his edict of 968 was so strong that the use of the Byzantine liturgy, in some towns, lasted until the end of the seventeenth century.

Monte San Giacomo Club
The Feast of Saint Ann, held in Hoboken in July, was originally started by the San Giacomesi as a way of celebrating the tradition of the town, where Saint Ann and San Giacomo are the patron Saints. On the day of Saint Ann, July 26, the club is open to everyone and Roast Beef sandwiches and refreshments are served. This is a tradition of many years and is still followed today.
The Ladies Auxiliary of the club is very instrumental, as well, in promoting our ideals and traditions and passing them on to our children.

Italy is synonymous with culture. Throughout the millennia Italy has made more contributions to the culture of Western Civilization than any other country in the world. In almost every category, Italy has defined, created, or improved upon the culture of the world. The birthplace of the Renaissance and the beginning of modern western civilization, Italian culture is as tangible and palpable today as it ever has been.
Over sixty percent of the world's cultural treasures lie within Italy. One glimpse at her extraordinary heritage explains how: the great artistic masters and masterpieces: Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael, Leonardo de Vinci, Titian, Tintoretto, Bellini, Botticelli; the musical virtuosos: Vivaldi, Puccini, Stradivari, Pavarotti; the architectural wonders of Florence, Vicenza, and especially Venice; the bounteous foods and wines: Chianti, Valpollicella, pasta, pizza; the modern fashions and styles of Armani, Gucci, and Ferrari…. Whether yesterday or today Italy has it all, and always has.
No where else in the world can be found the extraordinary richness and grandeur of the Italian culture. Yet inextricably intertwined with the highest of high culture is a uniquely Italian enjoyment of "la dolce vita" and an unparalleled love for the experience of life. The Italian way is one of quality, enjoying the joy of life, the beauty, the splendor, and the magic. This magnificent quality is reflected throughout its wonderful artistic heritage and never fails to infuse the visitor with its seductive essence. Italian culture has improved the world perhaps more than any other.
