The Isle of Man occupies a central position, not only in the Irish Sea, but also in the British Isles. The Island is some 33 miles (52 kilometres) long from north to south and 13 miles (22 km) wide from east to west at the widest point.
The coastline, which is over 100 miles (160 km) long, encompasses an area of 227 square miles (572 sq. km). Despite its comparatively small size, the Island contains a wide variety of scenery. A range of hills stretch obliquely across the Island, the highest of which is Snaefell at 2,036 feet (621 metres). Between these hills lie well defined valleys, which provide endless changes of scenery. Around the Island’s flat northern plain are long sandy beaches which contrast markedly with the rocky cliffs and sheltered bays around the rest of the coastline. Over two thirds of the land mass is cultivated, principally the fertile northern and southern plains.
It is said that the Isle of Man is like the whole of Britain in miniature and yet with a population density of just 316 people per square mile (125 per sq.km) there is room to breathe and grow.

From Snaefell Mountain, the highest point in the Isle of Man, one can see England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Yet the Isle of Man is a self governing nation with one of the oldest parliaments in existence, enjoying a thriving relationship with the UK that gives it autonomy over its internal affairs. It is not and never has been part of the United Kingdom. The Isle of Man is not a member of the EU but does enjoy a special relationship through Protocol 3 to the United Kingdom's Treaty of Accession. The Isle of Man has excellent health care , high education standards, efficient transport and communications and is unspoilt by urban sprawl or pollution. Its rich heritage and high quality of life make it a most attractive environment in which to live and work.
    Background

The Isle of Man, situated in the centre of the British Isles, is an internally self-governing dependent territory of the Crown which is not part of the United Kingdom.
    Quality of Life

The Isle of Man is not only unspoilt but it can boast a high quality environment free of major crime and pollution which has disfigured many modern industrial and urban areas.

The Isle of Man occupies a central position, not only in the Irish Sea, but also in the British Isles. The island is some 33 miles (52 kilometres) long from north to south and 13 miles (22 kilometres) wide from east to west at the widest point. The coastline, which is over 100 miles (160 kilometres) long, encompasses an area of 227 square miles (572 sq.kilometres). The capital town is Douglas, the seat of the Manx Government and main centre of population (25,308). Other major settlements are Onchan (8,706), Ramsey (7,626), Peel (3,779), Port Erin (3,351), Castletown (3,082) and Port St Mary (1,927) in the south. The 2001 Census recorded a resident population of 76,300, which represented an increase of almost 5% since the 1991 Census. This increase occurred mainly within the working age range through the immigration of economically active persons, which reflected the expansion in the Manx economy over the previous 5 years and underlines the close relationship between economic and demographic growth. The prevailing wind direction for most of the island is from the southwest, although the rugged topography means that local effects of shelter and exposure are very variable.

    Project Team:
Richard Chiverrell and Geoff Thomas The project was a new initiative, but built upon existing research. Three objectives were targeted in the research that formed part of the Elf Exploration funded Isle of Man Geological Work Programme led by the British Geological Survey (BGS). Quaternary research during the last 30 years produced data and knowledge that was essential for the revision of the existing BGS Geological Map of the Isle of Man (Lamplugh 1903). The research grant facilitated the integration of existing key data into a GIS leading towards the production of a new 1:50,000 scale Geological Map and funded a field season to resolve problem locations and to complete the mapping of selected areas. Three deliverables were produced from the research:
  • Digital and paper mapping of the Quaternary Geology of the Isle of Man, which forms a large portion of the new 1:50000 Geological Map. The map will be published in late 2001.

    Geography, Population, Languages
The Isle of Man is not part of the United Kingdom. The Isle of Man is located in the Irish Sea equidistant from England, Scotland and Ireland. Its area is 588 sq. km. The population is about 70,000 resulting in a population density of roughly 120 people per sq. km. A third of the population live in the capital, Douglas, and its suburbs. The official language is English. Because of the Celtic origins of the Island, Gaelic is also spoken. back
    History, Political Structure and Law
The Isle of Man is not a member of the EU, although it has "special relationship" status. This guarantees free trade between the island and the countries of the EU, while absolving the island from involvement with the EU budget and long-term programmes such as harmonisation of taxation. The Isle of Man is an excellent, highly regarded jurisdiction for the establishment of a range of corporate structures with differing tax status, as outlined below.
