G'day! Welcome to our Australian W B YEATS Society Australian Yeats Society
The Australian Yeats Society BEYOND BEN BULBEN in the State of Victoria Australia consists of a group with a shared interest in Irish and Anglo-Irish literature and poetry, especially that of WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS (1865- 1939). The title BEYOND BEN BULBEN evokes the distance - both in time and space - from Sligo and the magical YEATS COUNTRY , in the heart of which is the resting place of W. B. Yeats and his wife George in Drumcliffe Churchyard. At the foot of BEN BULBEN the mountain which dominates Sligo town from the North and faces that other dominant magical cairn topped mountain KNOCKNAREA.
MacLysaght's The Surnames of Ireland defines the name YEATS as meaning 'dweller by the gate'. A more appropriate name could not have been given to W. B. and his family; for they and their vast opus is indeed a 'doorway' to the intellectual 'truth' of life.
Beyond Ben Bulben invite you through this gate to meet with
the contemporaries of W. B. Yeats including: AE(George Russell)
George Moore, James Joyce, Oliver St John Gogarty

An Outline History and Descriptive Bibliography
Author: Tom Clyde
No serious study of any Irish writer is complete without an examination of this vital context to their life and work.
An Imagined History
Michael McAteer
Standish O'Grady was a major figure of the Irish Literary Revival whose work has received scant attention. The new assessment situates his literary, historical and political writing in its European intellectual context and considers the far-reaching implications of his work for intellectual activity in contemporary Ireland. Recognising the manner in which O'Grady's work anticipates central questions in contemporary theory, McAteer argues that attempts to read him as either unionist or nationalist overlook the essentially contradictory nature of his writing. As a man of letters who believed that literature divorced from history was pernicious, and as an historian who believed that history divorced from imagination was 'no more history than a skeleton is a man', O'Grady internalised yet looked beyond the divisions that continue to structure intellectual debate in Ireland today, whether in terms of history against literature, fact against theory or, most recently, revisionism against post-colonialism. By so doing, McAteer claims he provided the framework for a new form of politics that found its expression in the ideology of co-operation, developed by George Russell, an ideology that attempted to transcend the nationalist-unionist divide at the start of this century.

http://www.jimfitzpatrick.ie/mythology/
THE MYTHOLOGICAL CYCLE.
The literature of ancient Ireland has been called "the earliest voice from the dawn of western European civilisation".
In his remarkable and inspirational book The White Goddess (Faber and Faber. London. 1961) Robert Graves said, "English poetic education should, really, begin not with the Canterbury Tales, nor with The Odyssey not even with Genesis, but with The Song of Amergin."
The Song of Amergin, which Graves tentatively but brilliantly restores in the White Goddess, is not the earliest poetic incantation in Irish literature but it is certainly outstanding for its evocative power. It holds, as well, great fascination for the scholar since variants hide the ancient Celtic calendar-alphabet of the learned caste, the Druids.
Unfortunately much of that Early Irish Literature has been lost; what remains is contained in the few priceless manuscripts that have survived centuries of warfare and invasion.

Irish Literature
Ancient Ireland
Books were first brought to Ireland by teachers of Christianity, and after accepting the new religion, the Irish learned to make their own Christian books. Books in those days were not written on paper, but on strong velvety vellum, made from the skins of young animals, most often calves. The skin had to be scraped and bleached and stretched to be made into vellum. Then it was written on, folded, and bound between covers to make a manuscript.

Limericks
The limerick probably got its name from an Irish refrain that contained the name of County Limerick, which is in southwest Ireland. The limerick is a five-line nonsense poem, with the rhyme scheme a-a-b-b-a-the first, second, and fifth lines (a) have three stresses; the third and fourth lines (b) each have two.
