Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Mr. Michael McDowell, has launched a website to stimulate discussion on the Telecommunications (Retention of Traffic Data) Bill which is currently being drafted. The Bill deals with the issue of allowing telephone data to be stored and accessed in the fight against crime. The site is a new and welcome initiative by the Government and it allows visitors to post their views......
Case Study: Compuscript

With an ailing typesetting system, and pressure from customers to increase the breadth of offer whilst, at the same time, reducing costs, Compuscript, the Shannon based pre-press bureau, had to do something drastic. Following a review of internal processes and direction it was decided that new systems were required to broaden the company's product portfolio and significantly decrease overheads. Using technology bought from the US in conjunction with the World Wide Web, this is exactly

83. British Embassy - Homepage - Main
Provides a range of practical information about Britain, the British government and the services provided by the Embassy.
http://www.britishembassy.ie
We have designed our website to give you an insight into our work. Some of our activities will be familiar, such as the Consular and Visa services we provide, but I hope you will find it interesting to see what else we do. As Ambassador, my role covers the whole range of the Embassy's work. I provide the focal point for the Irish Government and people to talk to the British Government, and I will explain how we see things. You won't be surprised to learn that many of those conversations are about Northern Ireland. But we don't just talk to politicians and officials, important though their views are. We try to speak to as broad a range of people as possible, many of whom have been working for peace for a number of years. We are also partners in the European Union. Membership has transformed both our countries over the last 25 years, and perhaps most importantly it has provided an environment for a new, mature relationship between peoples with a shared, but sometimes tragic history. The EU continues to evolve, with enlargement to the East the next big project, but Britain and Ireland also share the important goal of ensuring that the EU is as relevant as possible to the interests and lives of European citizens. On a personal note I have a particular interest in opera and the theatre and I look forward to enjoying many fine productions in Ireland. With this in mind I am delighted that the British Council has been welcomed so warmly as a partner in those projects in all branches of the arts that serve to support and strengthen the very rich and vibrant cultural relationships on these islands.

NI Secretary Paul Murphy is to meet all of the parties
The government has no plan on how to restore Northern Ireland's political institutions Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams has said. He was speaking after meeting Northern Ireland Secretary Paul Murphy on the first day of a series of talks with the parties aimed at ending the current political crisis. The province's power-sharing institutions were suspended on 14 October following a row over allegations of IRA activity, including alleged spying within the Northern Ireland Office. The government hopes the discussions will pave the way for a review of the implementation of the Good Friday Agreement and finding a basis on which the institutions could be restored. Gerry Adams: "Government must fully implement Agreement"
But Mr Adams said the British Government lacked both a strategy and the urgency required to deal with the crisis.

Government 'knew' of road cuts danger
Report cites the main causes of road accidents
A report from the Northern Ireland Audit Office on Road Safety has shown the government knew several years ago that budget cutbacks would result in more deaths and injuries.
It is just one of a series of disclosures about the high casualty rate on roads in the province highlighted by the report.
The admission by the Department of the Environment (DoE) was made when they decided to cut back the number of Road Safety Education officers.
    Causes of accidents revealed
In an internal report in 1996, the DoE admitted that the reduction "was likely to result in a substantial increase in accidents involving 4 to 20 year olds within five years". The Auditors' report says that road deaths and injuries amongst children are the highest they have ever been. The report also questions the value of the "R" plates displayed by newly qualified Northern Ireland drivers for a year after passing the driving test.
