Initiated in 1992 by former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark and other anti-war activists, the IAC incorporates the demands to end racism, sexism and poverty in the U.S. with opposition to U.S. militarism and exploitative domination around the world.
The IAC believes in education and activism. We have organized mass meetings, demonstrations, forums, sit-ins, and teach-ins against U.S. military intervention, racism, lesbian and gay oppression and for jobs, housing, health care, immigrant rights, and education. The IAC works to build links between activists of many different struggles and facing many forms of oppression. We take on our shoulders the task of building a giant wave of resistance in the United States against the generals and bankers who try to rule the world in our name.

WCC Calls For Lifting Sanctions On Iraq The General Secretary of the World Council of Churches on February 18 called for the lifting of United Nations sanctions against Iraq, which he said are having a "disastrous effect" onthe civilian population. In a letter to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Dr. Konrad Raiser said, "The people of Iraq have suffered under a sanctions regime that is unrelentingly punitive…. The comprehensive application of an economic embargo in a manner that ignores the fundamental humanitarian needs and rights of 22 million people to basic health care, food and shelter is unacceptable." The letter was prompted by the resignations of UN Humanitarian Relief Coordinator for Iraq Hans von Sponeck and World Food Program Chief in Iraq Jutta Burghardt. Both recently resigned their posts in protest against the sanctions on Iraq.Dr. Raiser noted that the World Council of Churches has "consistently received reports over the past decade on the deteriorating conditions of the population [of Iraq.]" He asked that the Council's concerns be brought to the UN Security Council. Following are excerpts of the letter: In a letter to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, World Council of Churches General Secretary Konrad Raiser (above) wrote that "The comprehensive application of an economic embargo in a manner that ignores the fundamental humanitarian needs and rights of 22 million people [in Iraq] to basic health care, food and shelter is unacceptable." He urged the immediate lifting of the sanctions.

Security for Community Press Release Israel/Middle East ADL Commends President Bush's Message To International Community On Iraq Calling It "Clear And Forceful" New York, N.Y., September 12, 2002 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today commended President George W. Bush for "clearly and forcefully" calling on the international community at the United Nations General Assembly to take a stand against the threat to democracy and freedom posed by Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. In a letter to President Bush, Glen A. Tobias, ADL National Chairman and Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, said: We want to commend you for your very strong speech this morning before the United Nations General Assembly. You clearly and forcefully laid out the danger Iraq poses to the stability and safety of the region and the imperative of action by the international community to prevent President Saddam Hussein's use of non-conventional weaponry. As you eloquently stated, this is a defining moment for the international community to stand up against a threat to democracy and freedom. We hope they will join the United States in meeting this challenge.

    Republic of Iraq
    Head of state and government:
    Saddam Hussain
    Capital: Baghdad
    Population: 23.6 million
Official language: Arabic Death penalty: retentionist Scores of people, including possible prisoners of conscience and armed forces officers suspected of planning to overthrow the government, were executed. Scores of suspected anti-government opponents, including people suspected of having contacts with opposition groups in exile, were arrested. The fate and whereabouts of most of those arrested, including those detained in previous years, remained unknown. Several people were given lengthy prison terms after grossly unfair trials before special courts. Torture and ill-treatment of political prisoners and detainees were systematic. The two Kurdish political parties controlling Iraqi Kurdistan detained prisoners of conscience, and armed political groups were reportedly responsible for abductions and killings. Background Iraq remained under stringent economic sanctions imposed by UN Security Council resolutions since 1990 which reportedly resulted in severe hardship for the civilian population and a humanitarian crisis. In May the US government submitted a British-drafted resolution for a new sanctions regime, ''smart sanctions'', to the other permanent members of the UN Security Council. The proposal included lifting restrictions on imports of civilian goods while keeping in place controls on military imports and Iraqi oil revenues. The USA and United Kingdom (UK) wanted the resolution to be adopted by the Security Council before June, when the six-month phase of the ''oil-for-food'' program ended. However, the Russian Federation opposed the proposal and asked for more time to study the details. The vote was postponed indefinitely and the ''oil-for-food'' program was extended twice, in July and November.

    Talking Points on Iraq
From the Campaign to End the Cycle of Violence (North Carolina)
January 31, 2003 There is no credible evidence that Iraq has nuclear weapons (this was confirmed this week by the Jan. 27 report to the UN Security Council) or is engaged in reviving its nuclear program. Saddam Hussein may have hidden chemical or biological weapons (most of it originally supplied by US and other western nations), but no means to deliver them (the longest range of any discovered missiles is 180 or so kilometers, about 120 miles). There is no evidence that Saddam Hussein has the will or the capacity to attack the US. Iraq is a battered, weak nation after being routed in the Gulf War and under embargo since. UN inspectors destroyed a large percentage of Iraq’s military capacity during the 1990s. There is no credible evidence of Iraqi ties to Al Qaeda, despite Bush Administration allegations. Al Qaeda considers Saddam Hussein to be an enemy, a secularist who has betrayed Islam. Saddam Hussein is certainly a cruel dictator, who was just as cruel when the US supported him in the brutal Iran/Iraq war of the 1980s.

    Iraq
    International Religious Freedom Report
Released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor
The Interim Constitution provides for individual freedom of religion, provided that it does not violate "morality and public order;" however, the Government severely limits freedom of religion in practice, represses the Shi’a religious leadership, and seeks to exploit religious differences for political purposes. Islam is the official state religion. Other religions are practiced in the country, but the Government exercises repressive measures against any religious groups or organizations that are deemed not to provide full political and social support. There was no change in the status of respect for religious freedom during the period covered by this report. Although Shi’a Arabs are the largest religious group, Sunni Arabs traditionally have dominated economic and political life. Sunni Arabs are at a distinct advantage in all areas of secular life. The Government also severely restricts or bans outright many Shi’a religious practices. The Government for decades has conducted a brutal campaign of killings, summary execution, arbitrary arrest, and protracted detention against the religious leaders and followers of the majority Shi’a Muslim population and has sought to undermine the identity of minority Christian (Assyrian and Chaldean) and Yazidi groups. The regime systematically has killed senior Shi’a clerics, desecrated Shi’a mosques and holy sites, interfered with Shi’a religious education, and prevented Shi’a adherents from performing their religious rites.
