One of the young comrades leading the student antiwar movement here called me to ask for some pointers on resources on Iraq and its recent history up to the first Gulf War. He is taking part in a teach-in on Tuesday and I'm afraid I wasn't able to help him much. If people here are aware of web sites/documents in this subject area that he can consult, please post the information here. I've told him how to access the list on the web, so posting directly to the list would be best, rather than sending me the info personally. WELCOME to Iraq's History Page It might be obvious for everyone that in order to establish a correct understanding of the situation in a certain country, you need to acquire a proper knowledge of the history of that country. Thus, I tried to collect as much information as possible about the Iraqi history. The main objective was to provide a historical profile of Iraq that is both short and satisfying at the same time. Here you will find breif information about the different stages of the Historical development in Iraq, from the oldest known traces of the early human populations in this part of the world until the recent days in a chronological order. I hope that this humble effort would help younger Iraqi generations in diaspora to maintain a better knowledge about the History of their Homeland, and at the same time I hope that every friend of the Iraqi people would find some useful information regarding the history of Iraq. Please... Notice that the long and rich History of Iraq is much greater than being displayed entirely on few pages on internet; yet this page could serve as a proper start point. Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988)
The Iran-Iraq War was multifaceted and included religious schisms, border disputes, and political differences. Conflicts contributing to the outbreak of hostilities ranged from centuries-old Sunni-versus-Shia and Arab-versus-Persian religious and ethnic disputes, to a personal animosity between Saddam Hussein and Ayatollah Khomeini. Above all, Iraq launched the war in an effort to consolidate its rising power in the Arab world and to replace Iran as the dominant Persian Gulf state. Phebe Marr, a noted analyst of Iraqi affairs, stated that "the war was more immediately the result of poor political judgement and miscalculation on the part of Saddam Hussein," and "the decision to invade, taken at a moment of Iranian weakness, was Saddam's". Iraq and Iran had engaged in border clashes for many years and had revived the dormant Shatt al Arab waterway dispute in 1979. Iraq claimed the 200-kilometer channel up to the Iranian shore as its territory, while Iran insisted that the thalwega line running down the middle of the waterwaynegotiated last in 1975, was the official border. The Iraqis, especially the Baath leadership, regarded the 1975 treaty as merely a truce, not a definitive settlement. The Iraqis also perceived revolutionary Iran's Islamic agenda as threatening to their pan-Arabism. Khomeini, bitter over his expulsion from Iraq in 1977 after fifteen years in An Najaf, vowed to avenge Shia victims of Baathist repression. Baghdad became more confident, however, as it watched the once invincible Imperial Iranian Army disintegrate, as most of its highest ranking officers were executed. In Khuzestan (Arabistan to the Iraqis), Iraqi intelligence officers incited riots over labor disputes, and in the Kurdish region, a new rebellion caused the Khomeini government severe troubles.

History and Government
History:
In 1920, Iraq was placed under a League of Nations mandate administered by the UK, whose forces had occupied most of the country. The Hashemite Amir Faisal ibn Hussain, brother of the new ruler of neighbouring Jordan, Abdallah, was proclaimed King in 1921. The country achieved independence in 1932, but British forces intervened once again in 1941 to prevent a pro-Nazi coup. British troops were finally withdrawn in 1947. In 1958, the Hashemite Dynasty was overthrown by a group of radical army officers inspired by the example of Gamal Abdel Nasser in Egypt, and led by Brigadier Abdul al-Karim Kassem. The new regime failed to consolidate its position, however, and relied on a precarious coalition of forces, which quickly disintegrated.
The fighting lasted until August 1988 when the two exhausted nations sued for peace with Iraq having made some minor territorial gains. The Iraqi economy was crippled and had incurred an enormous foreign debt, much of which was owed to neighbouring Kuwait: this became a serious source of friction between the two governments over the next two years.

Iraq's History at a Glance
British airplanes flying over Iraq during the British Mandate, 1921 The roots of modern Iraq begin with the division of the Ottoman Empire following the First World War. When the former Ottoman Empire was divided between France and Britain, Britain received much of the “Fertile Crescent,” which included Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan and Israel, as well as Egypt. The Treaty of Versailles awarded Iraq to the British Mandate. The borders of these countries were not determined by historical or topographical standards, but rather by political agreement between the French and British. In 1922, the British High Commissioner to Iraq, Percy Cox, drew a line through the southern portion of the area designated for Iraq and “created” Kuwait , in order to accommodate additional political requirements. In 1932, with the termination of the British Mandate in Iraq, the country was granted independence. Initially, Iraq was a monarchy under

Country Info Iraq Introduction Iraq General Data Iraq Maps Iraq Culture ... Iraq Time and Date Iraq History Back to Top The territory of modern Iraq is roughly equivalent to that of ancient Mesopotamia, which fostered a succession of early civilizations. Of these, the earliest known was the civilization of Sumer, which arose probably in the 4th millennium bc and had its final flowering under the 3rd Dynasty of Ur at the close of the 3rd millennium bc. Periods of control by Babylonia and Assyria followed. In 539 bc Cyrus the Great of Persia gained control of the region, which remained under Persian rule until the conquest by Macedonian king Alexander the Great in 331 bc. After Alexander’s death the Greek Seleucid dynasty reigned in Mesopotamia for some 200 years, infusing the region with Hellenistic culture. 1258 Baghdad was conquered and sacked by Hulagu, grandson of the great Mongol conqueror Genghis Khan. Hulagu killed all the scholars in Baghdad and erected a pyramid from their skulls. He destroyed the elaborate irrigation system that the Abbasids had established. Iraq became a neglected frontier area ruled from the Mongol capital of Tabriz in Iran. In 1335 the last great Mongol ruler of this region died, and anarchy prevailed. The Turkic conqueror Tamerlane sacked Baghdad in 1401, again massacring many of its inhabitants. He, too, built a pyramid of skulls. Tamerlane’s invasion and conquest marked the end of Baghdad’s greatness.

The Cradle of Civilization
I n ancient times the land area now known as modern Iraq was almost equivalent to Mesopotamia the land between the two rivers (Tigris and Euphrates), the Mesopotamian plain was called the Fertile Crescent. This region is known as the Cradle of Civilization; was the birthplace of the varied civilizations that moved us from prehistory to history. An advanced civilization flourished in this region long before that of Egypt, Greece, and Rome, for it was here in about 4000BC that the Sumerian culture flourished

A fter the collapse of the Sumerian civilization, the people were reunited in 1700BC by King Hammurabi
Hammurabi Code
H ammurabi was a king and a great lawgiver of the Old Babylonian (Amorite) Dynasty. His law code was produced in the second year of his reign. Many new legal concepts were introduced by the Babylonians, and many have been adopted by other civilizations. These concepts include: Legal protection should be provided to lower classes; The state is the authority responsible for enforcing the law; Social justice should be guaranteed; The punishment should fit the crime. Hammurabi Code , ("An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.") is still quoted today attests to its importance, is a collection of the laws and edicts of the Babylonian king Hammurabi, and is considered the earliest legal comprehensive code known in history. A copy of the code is engraved on a block of black diorite nearly 2.4 m (8 ft) high. A team of French archaeologists at Susa, Iraq, formerly ancient Elam unearthed this block, during the winter of 1901-2. The block, broken in three pieces, has been restored and is now in the Louvre Museum in Paris.

They were carved out of Mesopotamia, formerly part of the Turkish Empire. Iraq itself includes three major groups: Sunni Muslims in the center surrounding the capital of Baghdad, Kurds in the north and Shi'a Muslims in the south. About 15% of the population is Kurdish, 80% Arab. Some 60% are Shi'ite Arab Muslims like their neighbors in Iran, but they are Arabs, not Persians. There are also significant Assyrian and Turkomen minorities in the north. None of of these groups were given any national rights in the League of nations settlement. National and tribal disputes, as well as friction with Western powers trying to control Iraqi oil, have played a great part in Iraqi history. Click on map to display a larger map.

when Turkey was allied with Germany, the territory was captured by British forces.
In 1920 Iraq was placed under a League of Nations mandate, administered by the UK. In 1921 Amir Faisal ibn Hussain, a member of the Hashemite dynasty of Arabia, was proclaimed King of Iraq, and his brother, Abdullah, was proclaimed Emir of neighbouring Transjordan, also administered by the United Kingdom under a League of Nations mandate.
The two new monarchs were sons of Hussain (Hussein) ibn Ali, the Sharif of Mecca, who had proclaimed himself King of the Hijaz (now part of Saudi Arabia) in 1916.
Relations with the Syrian Government deteriorated after a younger generation of Baathists seized power in Syria in 1970. A bitter rivalry existed thereafter between Syrian and Iraqi Baathists.
Relations with Syria improved in October 1978, when President Assad of Syria visited Baghdad. Plans were announced for eventual complete political and economic union of the two countries.
In mid-1990 the Iraqi Government criticized countries (principally Kuwait and the UAE) which had persistently produced petroleum in excess of the quotas imposed by OPEC.

Iraq's History Is Written in Blood
By Eric Margolis
Foreign Correspondent
August 2, 2002
The Bush Administration's plans to invade Iraq and install a client regime in Baghdad may be popular in America, but to the outside world they increasingly recall old-fashioned British imperialism. If Administration hawks studied Iraq's gory history, they would learn it ranks among the most disastrous and tragic creations of Britain's colonial policy, and offers a grim reminder of what Bush's planned 'regime change' in Baghdad may bring. At the end of World War I, the victorious British and French fell like wolves on the rotting carcass of the defeated Ottoman Empire. After promising Arabs independence, Britain betrayed them, dividing the ex-Ottoman Mideast into weak states run from London. Oil had recently been discovered at either end of the Fertile Crescent: in the north around Mosul in Kurdish tribal territory; and in southern marshes bordering Iran. To secure oil for the Royal Navy, Britain created Iraq and put a puppet king, Faisal, on its throne. Faisal was to have been made king of Syria, but France managed to snatch Syria away from Britain. To form Iraq, Britain knitted together three utterly disparate, mutually hostile regions: Kurdish tribal lands: the Sunni Muslim region around Baghdad, then a small city with a predominantly Jewish and Christian population: and the Shia south. The result was an unstable, artificial Frankenstein state Ð a Mideast Yugoslavia.
