Researchers found that mental prowess during childhood predicted longevity among more than 2,200 older adults who took IQ tests as 11-year-olds in 1932. The investigators tracked down men and women who had taken school IQ tests in Aberdeen, Scotland. They found that the higher the then-elderly adults had scored on their school tests, the lower their odds of dying by age 76. For example, a woman who had scored 115 on the IQ test was twice as likely as a woman who had recorded an 85 to be alive at the time of the study. Among men with these same scores, those with the higher score were 32% more likely to still be alive. It is well known that people of lower income face the prospect of poorer health and an earlier death. Income and social status, education and mental ability are all closely related. However, they write, little is known about whether there is a link between IQ and death risk.

The Flynn Effect: Rising IQs around the world The observed increase in average IQ scores of 3 points per decade has been reported by many as proof that intelligence is not stable but is flexible with regards to environmental influences. However, none of the authors in this extensive review of the data, believes that intelligence is increasing at a rate greater than can be attributed by eugenic means (breeding smarter people). Instead, they are looking at the mechanisms of tests and how they are administered and interpreted in different time periods as people become exposed to differing environments. To a scientist it usually means being able to solve hard problems. Measuring this kind of problem-solving intelligence is not difficult. Quite the contrary. In fact, whatever test of intelligence you administer, wether focused on verbal or spatial thinking, the same people tend to do well. This led Psychologist Charles Spearman to propose way back in 1904 that there must be some general factor of intelligence that the tests were measuring. He called it g , and argued that it contributed to success on a wide range of cognitive tasks. g is what I.Q. largely measures (it measures other more specific abilities as well). Most psychologists did not agree with Spearman, favoring instead the idea that high-level thinking involves many factors. The idea was that analytical thinking requires a large set of separate information handling abilities from different parts of the brain, some spatial, some verbal, many involved with the speed with which particular groups of nerve cells can process information. Dr. John Duncan of the Medical Research Council in Cambridge, England and colleagues reported in the journal SCIENCE this week that Spearman had it right all along.

But, no intelligence tests in popular use today provide completely unbiased assessments of individual intelligence or a child's likelihood for school success. School success, experts agree, is based in part on a child's level of intelligence; however, the other part of success requires proper grade level placement and opportunities to excel. Unfortunately, most placement tests and intelligence tests are biased toward a predominantly white, middle-class population. True, the American culture should be one culture if we are to be one nation; however, a five year old*** citizen born of immigrant parents who do not speak English should be entitled to learn and excel along with other five year old citizens. If a biased intelligence test places such a child into a remedial class, this child may not succeed. History and science have proven that no group of people is intellectually superior to any other ethnic or racial group.
