The largest portion of outstanding debt on June 30, 2002, is made up of "general obligations" equaling $3,142,879,635(41%) and "revenue" obligations equaling $2,025,355,652 (27%). The most commonly reported purpose for issuing obligations is "Public Buildings/Schools," with $2,136,528,774 (28%). The purpose category "other" ranks second, totaling $1,810,632,802 (24%). The purpose category "utilities/sewers" ranked third, totaling $1,354,033,555 (18%). SHORT TERM DEBT OBLIGATIONS The body of the report this year has a breakout of the short-term debt obligations for each entity. Short-term debt is an obligation of the entity, but is primarily used for cash flow purposes or in anticipation of issuing longer-term debt at a future date. There may or may not be a tax levy which supports this debt. CITIES Cities report the greatest amount of outstanding obligations, with $2,982,421,272 outstanding as of June 30, 2002.
