At the age of 75, a year before his death, he received a patent on the fastest water craft in the world: the HD-4. Between these two inventions, Bell's fertile brain formulated hundreds of new concepts." Air conditioning, CD-ROMS, and solar heating panels are a few of the many modern conveniences that can be traced to Bell.

General Biography Sites
Lives, the Biography Resource

Claims to be "The largest guide to biography sites on the Web... With 3945 listings representing almost 3500 biographical pages and sites", and I believe them! Browse alphabetically by last name, or by category such as era, region, or profession. Also features special collections of resources including "Canadians", "Women", "African Americans", etc. Nicely organized and VERY comprehensive. Also has a keyword search feature. *Important Note* - this resource only includes biographies of people who have died. Exception: people found in the Collections (General Collections, Professions, Eras, Regions, Criticism) may be living.*
Biography.com

Infoplease.com Biography

I love Infoplease. All their reference resources are great, and this is no exception. You can "search the more than 30,000 biographies in our almanacs, dictionary, and encyclopedia" or you can browse by category, such as World Rulers, Entertainers, Women, Artists, Athletes, Writers, Explorers, and much, much more. The only thing negative about Infoplease is the amount of annoying pop-up ads. Still, a great resource.
Biographical Dictionary
"This dictionary covers more than 28,000 notable men and women who have shaped our world from ancient times to the present day." A lot of entries, but not a lot of information is in each entry bios are short. Another drawback is there is no browsing feature, the database must be searched (by name, keyword or date). Tricky if you don't know the spelling. But searching by date is a nice feature, and there are good searching tips given.

  • The consumer may have benefited from industrialization, but in most cases the worker did not. More goods were available and usually at lower prices but at what cost to the worker. Factory conditions deteriorated making them unsafe and unhealthy with low pay and long hours. Government usually favored the factory owners, therefore reform and protective legislation was a long time in coming. Freed of the bonds of patronage and crowded by the invention of the camera, the artist had to redefine his role in a rapidly changing society. Stepping outside the establishment gave him the freedom to comment, protest or simply portray his impressions. Art was dynamic, experimental and often times rebellious. The Romantic artists perused beauty in nature and the splendors of past ages. Realists attempted the truthful portrayal of the real world, objective and unprejudiced. Impressionists were more interested in perception while Post-Impressionist artists gave personal significance to their subject matter.

THE BIO-ASSESSMENT OF LEGAL DIMENSIONS-LAW, TECHNOLOGY, ART
Mayer Gabay, Esq.
Civil Service Commissioner
Former Director General, Ministry of Justice
Israel Since the beginning of time and the entry of man into the universe, ways and means have constantly and persistently been sought to improve the quality of life on our planet. That search has been the golden thread running throughout the history of mankind: from the caveman wielding his club for protection and hurling his spear for food and clothing, to the present day wherein technology, in all its manifold facets, has risen, and is rapidy continuing its ascent to heights beyond the imagination even of those who set its early course. If one takes but a cursory glance at world history, it is readily seen how the development of society has brought in its wake ease, comfort and leisure activities which, in this era of super-modernity, are tended to be taken for granted by those who are fortunate enough to enjoy them. Technology, in ameliorating the conditions of life, offers countless benefits to mankind. It is true to say, therefore, that the harnessing of technology for man's activity, ingenuity and inventiveness has had, and is continuing to have, an ever-increasing deleterious affect on the conditions of life on earth. In the field of technological endeavour a price has been exacted in terms of pollution and other environmental hazards, the negative affect on ecology in general, the terrifying means man has developed for his potential self-destruction, and the inevitable stress and strain imposed on the mental and physical health of mankind.

Re: The student's extra $25,000
Fri, 13 Feb 87 09:56:57 pst At a recent aviation safety conference, Jack Eggspuler told a story similar to that of the student with the extra $25,000 credited to his account [Steve Thompson, RISKS-4.46 ]: He had banked for years at a small-town bank. One day, a large banking conglomerate bought up the small bank. After this, Jack noticed that his deposits weren't being listed. He went into the bank to talk to them. It turned out that his account number, which had been assigned to him when the bank was independent, was identical to Borden Industries' account number with the conglomerate. Yup, his penny-ante deposits were going into Borden's account. He thought it was straightened out. A week or so later he went in to cash a check, and asked for his balance. It was: $9,238,345.35. Ulp! He thought of a new Piper, but settled for a copy of the printout. He's got it hanging on his wall... GIBU: Garbage in, Bucks out? Ron Wanttaja (ssc-vax!wanttaja)

Tissue Science and Engineering Technical Conference on
Surgical Applications of Thermal Energy
Conference Chair: Thomas P. Ryan, Valleylab
This conference is intent on soliciting not only engineers and physicists who model and create the technology-driven devices, but advocates clinician presenters who, as the technology users, must ultimately prove the success or failure of a treatment or device. By disseminating clinical usage and clinical trial results, the clinician-user community in attendance will benefit. Papers are solicited on the following and related topics in laser, ultrasound, microwave, radiofrequency, and cryogenic and other thermal treatments:
  • energy source advantages in treatment of various target organs
  • control and monitoring of thermal energy delivery
  • interstitial therapy or ablative therapy
  • energy delivery that replaces surgery
  • usage and potential complications from thermal energy
  • energy source-tissue interactions
  • noninvasive thermometry techniques
  • surgical or office-based applications of energy and patient benefit
  • tissue reshaping
  • noninvasive blood flow imaging for thermal treatments
  • mathematical modeling for device design and treatment planning.
