here are thousands of buildings in this country, with millions of people in them who have no telephones, no cable television, and no reasonable prospect of broadband services. They're called schools," said Reed E. Hundt, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission in a New York Times interview on December 6, 1993. Many students today are not getting the technological information in the classroom that they need to meet the demands of the future. To combat this problem, DOE's Office of Science Education and External Relations at ORNL has created the Oak Ridge Regional Education Center. The center offers year-round, hands-on learning and research opportunities for students and teachers from elementary school through college using the most up-to-date computer equipment. Several years ago, DOE named several national laboratories, including ORNL, as science education centers. The Oak Ridge Regional Education Center was built in January 1993. The center interacts with numerous regional groups, including the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Appalachian Regional Commission, and the Appalachia Education Laboratory. DOE is committed to using its highly trained technical staff and advanced facilities to strengthen science and mathematics education nationally. New partnerships are strengthening the center's focus on national education goals and on education reform within the Southeast. Support for these partnerships includes a major new focus on computing and communications technology for educational applications.

Educating With The Internet
KNOWLEDGE QUEST - September/October 1998
Educating with the Internet: Using Net Resources at Home and at School
By Nancy Skomars This straightforward manual for beginners includes the obligatory information on getting connected and the lists of sites by subject area. Lessons and extended activities are presented that can model the planning of Internet curriculum in language arts, science, sports, history, mathematics, and interdisciplinary activities. Of concern is the inclusion of a CD-ROM of updated sites and lessons that also contains The Internet WatchDog , a monitoring program that "allows the teacher to record all computer activity (even off the Internet) by taking random screen captures, logging all computer applications, and recording downloaded graphics." Review by Donna Horn, CACHE
Publication of the PC Users Group of South Jersey
April 1988 Vol. XV "A must-buy for educators and parents!"
"If you're an educator, this book is definitely for you! It is packed with tips and ideas for incorporating the Work Wide Web into the learning process. Even if you've never been online before, you'll be up and running after reading this book. You'll learn how to access sites, search for information, and integrate what you find into your lesson plans. Educating with the Internet has so much information packed into 386 pages, that it's impossible to cover it all in this review.

31. Preface
One publication cannot teach everything there is to know about the 3. find answersto your technical questions about getting connected to the internet;.
http://www.usaid.gov/regions/afr/leland/manual/manenglish/preface.htm
Preface Log onto the Internet! Gain unlimited access to information! Communicate with colleagues and funders in other countries without worrying about high phone charges and time differences! Showcase your products and services, 24 hours a day, seven days a week! Wait a minute.... True, the Internet can bring these benefits and more to your organization, but only if you use it to your advantage. Getting there can be confusing. You must decide whether you need new computers or telephone lines and how much these items will cost. You must ensure that your staff feel comfortable with the technology and make efficient use of their time in front of the computer. And with an array of Internet tools available to retrieve and disseminate information, you must understand which applications are most relevant and cost-effective for your organization. Equally as important as the technical aspects, you must be able to plan how your organization can take advantage of the Internet to achieve its goals. This manual, Making the Internet Connection Count, takes you, your organization, your work team, or any groups you intend to collaborate with through a process of examination and discovery. You will think about how you use information now, how you could use it in the future, and how you plan to introduce or expand the use of the Internet in your organization consistent with your organization's needs. Making the Internet Connection Count is intended for decision makers and staff of NGOs, educational institutions, and government agencies that currently do not have, or have very limited, access to the Internet. Chances are, if you are reading this book, you have decided that you want to introduce or expand the use of the Internet in your organization. You may be a senior manager who is giving this book to someone on your staff to make it happen. Or you may suddenly find yourself in a lead role as your organization's "Internet champion," getting your organization online.

Home College of Veterinary Medicine Washington State University John Gay, DVM PhD DACVPM ACE Field Disease Investigation Unit VM 577 Herd Production Medicine Getting Connected to the Information Pipeline Version 3.2 Updated Objective: The objective is for students to identify and begin using the sources of current herd production medicine information, particularly via the Internet, that they will need in practice to solve problems and to remove bottlenecks in client's herds and to begin networking with innovative colleagues. Rationale: Practitioners need efficient ways for keeping up on developments in ag animal veterinary medicine, due both to rapidly advancing knowledge, technological innovations (e.g., ultrasound) and to the rapidly changing industries. This advancing knowledge may come from bench research, field studies, collective practitioner experience or the allied industries and may appear in the primary scientific literature, proceedings of professional organizations, proceedings of trade meetings, trade publications, and industrial sources. As the need for an update on a given topic is often driven by the immediate need to solve a particular, unique problem that is occurring in a client's herd, the ability and means to do this efficiently and timely is important. For the purposes of this class, the following is focused on the bovine.

HTML HTML for the World Wide Web (Visual Quickstart Guide Series) by Elizabeth Castro This is the best book I have ever seen for learning HTML. And the price is amazing too ... "Elizabeth Castro's clear and concise book is an absolute must for HTML beginners. Seasoned web page designers will also find it useful as a quick reference guide. However, one of the key features of this book is how well Elizabeth and Peachpit Press have organised its layout. The pictures on each page are small but very readable and they add so much to the usefulness and enjoyment of this book. I wish more books would do this." HTML 4 Interactive Course by Kent Cearley Based on HTML 3 Interactive Course , HTML 4 Interactive Course teaches HTML from the ground up. It covers all hot topics in version 4, such as Cascading Style Sheets, Frames, Dynamic HTML, and Dynamic Style Sheets (including layers). Students will learn to work hands-on with the new trends in HTML technology from XML, WYSIWYG Editors, and 3-D pages while further developing skills in presentation, special effects, and creating Web sites that stand out. HTML 4 Interactive Course covers all aspects of HTML including multimedia, Web forms, scripts, advanced interactive techniques, and text indexes and phone directories (including interfaces). Beginning with Chapter 1, students create their own Web page - from getting connected to the Internet, writing HTML code, and coding hyperlinks in their site. With each chapter, the Web page will become more sophisticated.
