The Declaration sets forth the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all men and women in all nations, everywhere in the world. It states that the rights to liberty, equality and dignity are the birthright of every person and that the rights to life, liberty and security of person are essential to the enjoyment of all other rights. Among the civil and political rights recognized by the Declaration are the right to freedom from slavery, from torture, from arbitrary arrest and from interference with family; the right to recognition before the law; the right to a fair trial; the right to marry and have a family; and the right to freedom of thought and peaceful assembly. Human Rights Studies Program The program encompasses courses that are offered by various humanities departments within the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, as well as those that are offered by several of Columbia University's professional schools, including Law, Journalism, Business, Social Work, Public Health, Teachers College, and the School of International and Public Affairs. The program concludes with a substantial paper that brings synthesized perspectives from two (or more) disciplines to bear on a limited topic within the student's area of concentration. Since relatively few courses meet during evening hours, it would be difficult to complete this program taking evening courses alone. Requirements All students in the program should consult the program director regularly. The requirements here are special to the program and should be considered in conjunction with the general requirements for the Liberal Studies M.A. degree. Daggett Named Assistant General Organizer at Union's Executive Council Meeting During South Atlantic and Gulf Coast District Convention in Lake Tahoe LAKE TAHOE (July 19, 2000) - History was made today with the International Longshoremen's Association, AFL-CIO as Gerald W. Owens was appointed to serve as the union's General Organizer, the first African-American to occupy that position in the ILA's 108 year history. Mr. Owens' previously served as Assistant General Organizer and that position will be filled by Harold J. Daggett, who was Secretary-Treasurer of the ILA's Atlantic Coast District.These two appointments were made at this morning's meeting of the ILA's Executive Council, according to an announcement made by International President John Bowers. The appointments made today resulted from the announcement on Monday that Frank Lonardo, ILA General Organizer since 1991 and veteran of the union for more than 45 years, had resigned his position, as of July 1, 2000, because of health reasons. Mr. Owens and Mr. Daggett will serve the unexpired terms of their predecessors which run until July 2003.

This issue will affect the freedom of speech, the privacy, and the commercial interests of ever-greater numbers of people as the 21st century approaches. The issue is cryptography. Why should cryptography interest all citizens? Because increasingly, our communications and commerce will take place over electronic networks that make them open to snooping and corruption by malicious parties. Cryptography is the mathematical science for improving the privacy, authenticity, and integrity of communications, independent of the communications medium or the distance the message travels. Cryptography on digital networks is becoming an important part of the commercial and political scene. Many predict that we will make purchases and update our bank accounts over digital lines; that cellular phones will grow in popularity; and that electronic mail will form a larger and larger portion of business and personal exchanges. The threats of having our money stolen, of being impersonated, and of having our secrets revealed to our enemies loom large. Unfortunately, many governments are afraid of privacy. They are trying to put limits on cryptography so that they can secretly intercept and read any communications they desire.

It is essential that people ― especially poor, vulnerable and marginalized population groups ― become aware of their right to the highest attainable standard of health. They should also be aware that their government has certain obligations and should be accountable. Awareness is the first step in mobilizing action in favour of being able to claim this right. "Awareness of human rights means that the disadvantaged can mobilize and empower themselves. The language of rights makes people conscious of the possibility of change," said Helena Nygren-Krug, Health and Human Rights Advisor, WHO. The goal of the cartoon is to reach out to adolescents and children. It is just one of several tools WHO is using to raise awareness of the right to health amongst people, including health practitioners and government officials. In addition to various publications on health and human rights, WHO is developing health and human rights training both at its headquarters and regional offices.
