Philosophy, Goals and Student Outcomes
Purpose and Philosophy
The purpose of an IU Southeast undergraduate education is to prepare students to act as thoughtful, informed and productive citizens and lifelong learners in the context of a complex and rapidly changing society. We believe that the best education is one that provides not only specific knowledge and skills but also intellectual breadth. Such an education enables students to develop into well rounded human beings who can provide the leadership their communities need in an era of rapid change. We embrace the notion of a set of common goals for an undergraduate education at IU Southeast and recognize that the means of attaining those goals will vary among degree programs. The coherence of an IU Southeast education lies more in the pursuit of common goals than in the completion of common courses. The pursuit of these goals is a shared responsibility of faculty and students. Courses in the major contribute to general education and those in general education contribute to the major. Thus all faculty members foster both the breadth and the depth of the education of all students in their courses.

Founded - Founded in 1965. Campus Beginnings The University of Southern Indiana began as a regional campus of Indiana State University, opening on September 15, 1965. In 1967, Southern Indiana Higher Education, Inc., (SIHE) raised nearly $1 million to acquire 1,400 acres for the Mid-America University Center. Groundbreaking was held June 22, 1968. Since September 1969, the University has occupied 330 acres, mostly donated by SIHE. Southern Indiana Higher Education, Inc. still owns more than 1,000 acres for development of higher education opportunities. On April 16, 1985, legislation was signed which made USI a separate state university. All legal matters were effective July 1, 1985.
Mission - The University of Southern Indiana is a broad-based institution offering programs of instruction, research, and service. A liberal arts and sciences curriculum serves as the foundation of knowledge for all programs and complements undergraduate programs leading to careers in business, engineering, government, health professions, education, and related fields. Selected master's degrees already in existence, and in development, serve persons in professional and technical studies. As a public institution, the University of Southern Indiana counsels and assists both business and industry and social, educational, governmental, and health agencies to higher levels of efficiency and improved services.

Scholars can come from a wide range of backgrounds including psychology, computer science, philosophy, mathematics, neuroscience, and others but share the common goals of better understanding the mind. Training in cognitive science prepares students admirably well for many of the careers that are major growth fields of the twenty-first century, including: telecommunications, information processing, medical analysis, data retrieval, human-computer interaction, and education. About the Program Established in 1989, the Program in Cognitive Science at Indiana University brings together faculty from many departments to study cognition and information. At present, 65 core faculty members and 38 associated faculty participate in the program. Representation is strong from the departments of psychology, philosophy, computer science, and linguistics. Other participating departments include biology, anthropology, education, library and information science, optometry, speech and hearing, and mathematics. Cognitive Science at Indiana University offers many special strengths. The program is highly integrated, encouraging interdisciplinary cooperation between all the participating disciplines.

Indiana University School of Medicine
The School of Medicine is responsible for providing medical education within the state of Indiana. As part of a major university, it accepts and fulfills five crucial responsibilities:
  • It provides its students with the opportunity to acquire a sound basic education in medicine and fosters the development of lifelong habits of scholarship and service;
  • It advances knowledge through research in biomedical studies and studies related to the cultural and behavioral aspects of medicine and the delivery of health care;
  • It provides graduate education in order to produce practitioners, teachers, and investigators through clinical residency programs and advanced degree programs in the basic medical sciences;
  • It offers continuing education programs aimed at maintaining and improving the competence of those professionals engaged in patient care;
  • It provides multiple services to the people of Indiana in all areas of the medical sciences and health care. In 1965 a School of Medicine faculty committee recommended the adoption of a comprehensive plan for medical education throughout the state of Indiana. The plan involved the use of regional facilities in addition to those of the Medical Center in Indianapolis. The plan would coordinate and utilize elective programs in community hospitals, preceptorships with practicing physicians, internship and residency programs, and continuing medical education programs throughout the state. The Indiana University Medical Center campus covers some 85 acres within one mile of the center of Indianapolis. Half of the first- and second-year classes are on the IUMC campus; the other half are at the centers for medical education. The School of Medicine’s enrollment in 2000–2001 consisted of nearly 1,100 M.D. students, 143 Ph.D. students, 115 M.S. students, and 38 M.D./Ph.D. students. In addition to opportunities at the centers for medical education, M.D. students may participate in clinical and elective rotations in physician offices and hospitals throughout the state and nation. Students may study or serve abroad during their medical school careers.

    Purdue VP emeritus, state leader in higher education dies
    John W. Hicks
    Hicks, who served Purdue for more than 40 years and had a major impact on Indiana higher education, died this morning (Friday, 12/20) at George Davis Manor in West Lafayette, following a long illness. He was 81. In addition to holding key administrative positions at Purdue, Hicks for many years was the university's liaison with the state of Indiana. He is credited with playing an important role in creating and developing the system of higher education that has now served generations of Hoosier students. Gov. Frank O'Bannon said, "Indiana owes John Hicks a debt of gratitude for the innumerable contributions he made to education in our state, including a half-century of dedication to Purdue University and a major role in creation of what is now Ivy Tech State College. His commitment to molding the minds of young people and to building institutions where that could occur was rare. I feel fortunate to have known him." Purdue President Martin C. Jischke said, "John Hicks had a major impact in helping to build Purdue as a great university and in developing Indiana's entire system of higher education. His achievements created opportunities and better lives for generations of Indiana students, who were always the focus of his work. He was a towering figure in higher education whose brilliance and personal style influenced not only our times, but the lives of all who knew him. He was as much loved as he was respected."
