#16 History

The following information should be helpful to exploring the relationships to GIS, GPS and the state standards. The world of geography is a very encompassing subject. Besides geography, when looking at the standards below, try to relate them to other subject areas as well.
STATE GOAL 16: Understand events, trends, individuals and movements shaping the history of Illinois, the United States and other nations.
Why This Goal Is Important: George Santayana said "those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." In a broader sense, students who can examine and analyze the events of the past have a powerful tool for understanding the events of today and the future. They develop an understanding of how people, nations, actions and interactions have led to today's realities. In the process, they can better define their own roles as participating citizens. Learning Standard Apply the skills of historical analysis and interpretation.

Illinois - A State Unit Study This mini unit on ILLINOIS uses the cross curricular approach to education. There are several activities from different academic subjects for you to choose from. One of the most important things is to have fun! Below are some activities to help you study ILLINOIS. You may choose to do all, some, or none of the activities. You can also alter the activities to better suit your individual child's needs. Some of these activities overlap each other, choose the one you think that you and the children will enjoy most. The main point of this unit is to make learning about ILLINOIS and enjoyable for all who are participating. Illinois's State Flag The Illinois flag is a simple representation of the Great Seal of Illinois against a white background. In 1969, the General Assembly voted to add the word "ILLINOIS" under the Great Seal of the flag. The State's name was added to the flag to ensure that people not familiar with the Great Seal of Illinois would still recognize the banner. Flag adopted 1915. Create a State "Infodesk": Before you begin this unit you may want to set up a research area. Place a desk or table in front of a bulletin board area. This will be where you can place relevant books, magazines, photographs, posters, newspaper articles, maps, scrapbooks, games, puzzles, computer software, task cards, travel brochures, etc. that you collect.

  • 1. What jobs are available for archaeologists?
Professional archaeologists work for universities, colleges, museums, the federal government, state governments, in private companies, and as consultants. They teach, conduct field investigations, analyze artifacts and sites, and publish the results of their research. The minimal educational requirement to work as a field archaeologist is a B.A. or B.S. degree with a major in anthropology or archaeology and previous field experience (usually obtained by spending a summer in an archaeological field school or participating as a volunteer, see question 5). While this is sufficient to work on an archaeological field crew, it is not sufficient to move into supervisory roles. Supervisory positions require a graduate degree, either an M.A./M.S. or a Ph.D. Academic Positions Museum Positions . Museums may be connected with a university or independent. Museum curators conduct research, publish the results, give public presentations, prepare displays, and conserve the museum collections. Museum positions require a graduate degree (M.A./M.S. or Ph.D.). Museum positions are usually full-year appointments.

"What makes a livable community? The Local Planning Technical Assistance Act encourages communities through the process of visioning and developing a comprehensive plan to find the answer to this question," Petrie said. The institute continues that evening with the Louis B. Wetmore Lecture, presented by Norm Krumholz at the Plym Auditorium, Temple Buell Hall, 611 E. Lorado Taft Drive, Champaign. Krumholz, a fellow in the American Institute of Certified Planners, is a professor in the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs, Cleveland State University, and the author of the book "Revitalizing Urban Neighborhoods." Krumholz will discuss "New Roles for Planners in Sick Cities.

Seven justices sit on the Illinois Supreme Court. Before becoming justices, six of them were appellate or circuit judges. Four have been trying cases for more than a quarter-century – the other two since the 1980s.
Now meet Thomas Kilbride, Justice No. 7.
This December, Justice Kilbride will celebrate his second anniversary as a member of the highest court in the land of Lincoln. It will also mark his second anniversary as a judge, period. Two years ago, the small-town lawyer from northwest Illinois entered the race for the 3rd Judicial District seat on the Illinois Supreme Court. He had never held judicial or legislative office. Kilbride’s credentials consisted of two decades representing low-income clients, as a staff attorney for Prairie State Legal Services and a solo practitioner specializing in child abuse and juvenile justice cases.
The contrast with his well-heeled opponent, State Senate Judiciary Chairman Carl Hawkinson, could not have been starker, nor Kilbride’s chances seemingly more remote. Hawkinson was a powerful state official with a Harvard Law pedigree, more than a half-million dollars in his campaign coffers, and a strong base of Republican support in a district that had not voted for a Democrat since Illinois began electing its Supreme Court justices in 1970.
So when Kilbride prevailed in the 2000 race with 52 percent of the vote, the political pundits were stunned. “When Kilbride originally filed to run, people assumed that if the election was left to its own devices, Hawkinson could have just mailed it in,” says Kent Redfield, a political studies professor at the University of Illinois. “Kilbride’s victory surprised everyone.”
