Vocabulary Learning Resources on the World Wide Web
Kenji Kitao and S. Kathleen Kitao
(Last updated on August 23,2000) The Internet has a great many resources for learning English. Among these many resources are ones that can help you improve your vocabulary. In this chapter, you will learn about the types of resources that are available and be introduced to some specific web pages. There are four basic types of sites on the web related to vocabulary learning. They are lists of links (which you can use to find other useful sites), web pages with games or quizzes to help you learn English words, web pages with information about English words and/or advice about how to learn English vocabulary, and reference works such as dictionaries and thesauruses. In this chapter, we will introduce examples of each of the types of resource. For each web page, the name of the page is listed first, followed by the web site address (URL) and in some cases, a further description that we have written of the web site.

We have organised it to be a thematic approach to enable learners to understand the relationship between various words. Beginners are advised to learn the basic words at the beginning and only move on if or when they have fully understood these words, intermediate and advanced learners should also study the build-up words and dialogues at the end of each section. Whenever possible each group of new words is introduced using pictures. To see the words associated with the picture place your mouse cursor over the picture. Try it now! Example:- The words associated with the picture are shown, for a short time, with their plural form in brackets - (s) on the end of the word means add an 's' to form the plural. Say the word out loud and try to remember it after the dialogue box has disappeared. Once you are confident with your understanding of the vocabulary check out the gamespage , and test yourself.
