SNOBOL4.ORG SNOBOL4 Resources
Formerly "Phil's SNOBOL4 Resources"
(over 12,000 visitors served) SNOBOL4 (StriNg Oriented and symBOlic Language) is a language for text processing, pattern matching, and much more, first designed and implemented at Bell Telephone Laboratories, Inc. (BTL) in the 1970's.
SNOBOL History
The first SNOBOL language was developed by David J. Farber Ralph E. Griswold and Ivan P. Polonsky in 1962. Farber was once overheard to say that this name was largely contrived when the original JACM article was published. The name was apparently picked when one of the original implementors made a statment such as, "This program doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of ...". The original SNOBOL system was doing in BEFAP assembler for the IBM 7090. The main language defect was the lack of built-in functions. A new implementation with built-ins produced SNOBOL2. Programmer defined functions were added to make SNOBOL3. SNOBOL3 was coded in macro assembler for the IBM 7090/7094, and ported to the IBM 7040/7044. Independant implementations were done for other machines including the Burroughs 5500, CDC 3600, RCA 601, SDS 930, and IBM 1620. Early versions of Unix came with an interpreter called "sno" (files from the The PDP-11 Unix Preservation Society ). The multitude of implementations caused a proliferation of language dialects both intentional and unintentional. The advent of third-generation computers with larger memories and faster CPU's provided the imputes for SNOBOL4, and the addition of a number of elements familiar to SNOBOL4 users: improved patterns, numeric data types, arrays, structures and tables.

TCLL1 parser generator
This parser generator generates tables to be used by programs written in Icon. It does not offer syntactic sugar for writing semantics routines. TCLL1 is an LL(1) parser generator and, as such, requires manipulation of the context-free grammar to put it in LL(1) form.
  • tcll1.zip - the code (in Icon) for the parser generator. tcll1.pdf - the document describing how to use TCLL1.
TCLLk parser generator
TCLLk is an LL(k) parser generator that itself manipulates a grammar to try to put it into LL(1) form and, when that fails, resorts to looking-ahead more than one symbol. It appears to be about as powerful as LALR(1).

    8.1. FORTH
FORTH is a token-based programming language that involves explicit stack-based programming with (at least) two stacks; beyond that, arguments tend to break out concerning whether or not people should use:
    • Text files or 1K disk "blocks" to store programs; An explicit "virtual machine definition" or make it entirely platform-independent; Run FORTH on bare hardware, or atop a featureful OS; Should there be "local variables"? Or should all words be defined to manipulate the stack directly?

It has been quite popular for use in real time applications, as many implementations provide tiny memory footprints and are well suited for burning ROMs. In addition, the programming model involves building up programs "bottom up" generally using an interactive interpreter, which eases debugging.

Jeffery Systems, of Las Cruces, New Mexico USA, is pleased to offer the following titles for sale, and in some cases, for free. Mail orders should be sent to the address at the bottom of the page; on-line ordering, including credit card orders and payments in Euros and UK pounds sterling, are available via Paypal, an Ebay company. Book purchases are offered with Free Bookrate Shipping to the continental U.S. For international shipping , see below. We recycle shipping materials (boxes, etc.) when possible.
    Our Balance:
Although we are not a "non-profit" organization, proceeds from book sales will directly benefit the further open-source development of Unicon. Jeffery Systems also provides Icon and Unicon consulting, support, and contract programming services. Unicon coinventer Clinton Jeffery is Jeffery Systems president and chief scientist; Susie Jeffery is Jeffery Systems proprietor and senior software engineer. As an experiment, we are keeping a public track of our book balance. You can view on this page the progress we are making towards buying time for Clint Jeffery or a student research assistant to work on improving Unicon. Most improvements to Unicon come the result of volunteers on multiple continents donating their time to add capabilities they wish to use themselves, but Jeffery Systems will hire students to make contributions when we can. Book orders will be reflected in this balance when they are shipped, at which time the shipping costs are known and the net proceeds can be determined.

    Icon Programming Language
    What is Icon?
    • Icon is a Very High-Level procedural Programming Language
    • A descendant of the SNOBOL family of languages, but syntax closely relates to the C programming langauge.
    • The language is written in C and is compiled down to C before it is complied into machine code.
    • The name Icon has no relation to the GUI term for a clickable image
    • Some of its applications include:
      • Prototyping
      • Tools
      • Text Processing
      • Graphics Programming
      • Artificial Intelligence
    • For more general information click here to view my powerpoint slide presentation, or visit Icon's homepage at www.cs.arizona.edu/icon/
    Code Examples:
    • One thing that seperates ICON from other languages is the use of generators . I have written a simple program that outlines the uses of the different generators. For more information, consult my powerpoint slide presentation
    • ICON also supports powerful text processing functions reminiscent of the SNOBAL family of languages from which it is derived. Here is a simple program to change the background colors of several HTML files using fast simple coding techniques. Line #10, which is commented out, can be used on a Unix based system to get the file list of a folder and place it in an array.
