DASH Diet
The DASH diet was planned to meet specific goals. In addition to blood pressure-lowering benefits, the diet is designed to contain commonly eaten foods that were not supplemented with nutrients beyond what would normally be added as part of common food manufacturing process. Instead of focusing on specific nutrients, the DASH diet focuses on whole foods that are inexpensive and widely available to many peoplemaking peanuts and peanut butter a perfect fit! We know that the DASH diet can help reduce hypertension, but changing dietary patterns is often challenging. Below is a sample menu plan used in the study. If your current diet resembles the control diet, try making small changes. Aim for a diet that more closely resembles the fruits and vegetables or the combination diet. Hypertension and Diet Put a halt on extra salt What is hypertension? High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a lifelong disease requiring continuous treatment. Left untreated, hypertension can lead to kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, loss of vision and other serious complications. Patients with hypertension should recognise the seriousness of this life-threatening disease and take measures to control it. A variety of dietary modifications have been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of hypertension, including salt and alcohol restriction as well as weight reduction. Increasing potassium intake, consuming fish oil supplements and acquiring a vegetarian diet can also lower blood pressure in some patients. Lifestyle changes, such as cessation of smoking and the initiation of an aerobic exercise regimen are also important. Indeed cases of mild hypertension may be sufficiently managed by the introduction of these lifestyle changes. Follow these simple dietary guidelines to make a positive change in your health:

Blood Pressure Are you putting too much pressure on your heart? What is High Blood Pressure? Blood pressure is the force exerted by
the blood on the blood vessels and the heart. It has two components: systolic pressure (higher count) is the maximum pressure in the arteries when the heart is actively pumping whereas diastolic pressure (lower count) is the minimum pressure when the heart is resting in between beats. Hypertension or high blood pressure (HBP) is defined as a blood pressure consistently exceeding 140/90mmHg when resting. Called the 'silent killer' because it does not always produce symptoms, it is one of the most common ailments that damages many organs. Uncontrolled high blood pressure leads to serious complications like heart attack, stroke, blindness and chronic kidney failure. Who is most at risk of getting HBP?

According to the National Institutes of Health, excess body weight is correlated closely with high blood pressure, and a weight reduction program can be very beneficial for lowering blood pressure and improving the efficacy of antihypertensive medications. Research has shown that weight reduction, even as little as 10 pounds, reduces the blood pressure of overweight persons with hypertension. Weight

Controlling your weight is a very important step that you can take to reduce your high blood pressure. Losing just a few extra pounds can help lower your blood pressure. Keeping your weight under control can also help you feel better, be more able to exercise, and reduce your chance of having a heart attack. For some people - those with less severe high blood pressure - losing weight may be all that's needed to control their hypertension. For others, losing weight may reduce the medication they need to take for their high blood pressure. Two things count about weight: how much and where.

PPH Primary Pulmonary Hypertension
Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (also known as PPH) is a rare and often fatal condition. The incidence of PPH is estimated at 1 to 2 per million in the general population, however the use of the diet drug Fen-Phen has created a dramatic increase in the risk of developing PPH. Fen-Phen is actually a combination of two drugs: Fenfluramine and Phentermine. A substantial body of scientific evidence establishes that the use of some diet drugs dramatically increases the risk of developing PPH.
American Home Products Corporation, the manufacturer of Fen-Phen, failed to warn doctors of the increased risk of PPH from the use of its diet pills. As a result, doctors throughout the United States prescribed Fen-Phen or Redux to their patients believing the drugs to be safe. Depending on the specific facts of your case, you may have a legal claim for the costs of treatment and for your pain and suffering.

EXPERTS URGE MORE AGGRESSIVE TREATMENT OF HYPERTENSION IN AFRICAN-AMERICANS
UM cardiologist Elijah Saunders, M.D., co-founder of the International Society on Hypertension in Blacks (ISHIB), takes the blood pressure of long-time patient William Hankins. Hypertension experts from across the U.S. are calling for more aggressive treatment of African-Americans with high blood pressure. The recommendations are published in the March 10 edition of the Archives of Internal Medicine in the article, “Management of High Blood Pressure in African-Americans.” “We have compelling evidence that African-Americans are significantly more likely to die from the consequences of high blood pressure than the general public, and that may be because current treatment strategies have not been very successful,” says Elijah Saunders, M.D., professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and cardiologist at the University of Maryland Medical Center. High Blood Pressure
Blood pressure is reported as an upper number (systolic blood pressure, which represents the pressure of the blood in the arteries when the heart beats) over a lower number (diastolic blood pressure, which represents the pressure between heartbeats). High blood pressure, or hypertension generally defined as blood pressure greater than or equal to 140/90 mmHg results when the arteries narrow, causing increased pressure within the vessels. It can be a risk factor for heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and peripheral vascular disease. Overview Treatment and Diagnosis Self-Care Web Links and Support Resources

LANDMARK GUIDELINES RAISE BAR FOR TREATMENT OF AFRICAN AMERICANS WITH HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
First-Ever Recommendations Address Major Killer of Black People; Urge Doctors to Use New Rules in Blood Pressure Management
March 10, 2003 - Atlanta. Ga . The International Society on Hypertension in Blacks (ISHIB) and the nation's leading medical experts have developed the first-ever guidelines for treating high blood pressure in African Americans. The recommendations, "Management of High Blood Pressure in African Americans" were published in the March 10 edition of the Archives of Internal Medicine. African Americans are significantly more likely to die of high blood pressure than the general public because current treatment strategies have primarily been unsuccessful. The recommendations urge health care providers to manage high blood pressure in Blacks in three new ways:
  • ISHIB advises that many African Americans will need to start on at least two medications in order to successfully lower their blood pressure SHIB recommends a lower blood pressure target of 130/80 mm Hg for African Americans with high blood pressure and other conditions like heart disease, kidney disorders or diabetes

Sodium Reduction/Weight Loss Cut Need for Drugs in Elderly Findings from two National Institutes of Health (NIH)-supported studies show that lifestyle changes, such as modifying one's diet and losing weight, substantially reduce blood pressure in adults and can keep older patients off antihypertensive medication. Findings from the studies are being presented at the American Heart Association scientific sessions in New Orleans, LA. The "Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension" (DASH) Trial was funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the National Center for Research Resources, with supplemental support from the NIH Office of Research on Minority Health. The "Trial of Nonpharmacologic Interventions in the Elderly" (TONE) was funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), with additional support from the NHLBI. Dr. Thomas Moore of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA, will speak about DASH at the late-breaking clinical trials session at 2:15 p.m. on November 13. Dr. Paul Whelton, director of the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology, and Clinical Research at The Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health and School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD, will present TONE's main results at 4:30 p.m. on November 11. Dr. Shiriki Kumanyika of the University of Illinois at Chicago, will describe the TONE intervention 2:00 p.m. on November 13.

Weight Loss
Chronic Fatigue Diabetes Hypertension ... Arthritis The living foods diet, with wheatgrass and other juices, provides very high quality, easily assimilated, nutrition. Wheatgrass juice, colon care, exercise and saunas all work to nourish and detoxify the body, especially the liver and colon. Yoga and meditation help reduce stress and calm the mind. The blending of these practices gives dramatic relief to body and mind. The atmosphere at the retreat is very warmhearted and supportive. Below you can find descriptions of some of the many health problems that we have addressed. Please contact us directly if you have any questions about a particular symptom and our experience with it. Over the years we have successfully treated hundreds of people with a wide range of symptoms. The retreat has also helped those in good health maintain and upgrade. Come take a healthful vacation and enjoy the wonderful opportunities for recreation, relaxation and good health. Weight Loss - while "fat farms" offer a calorie restricted, healthful diet and an exercise program to help with weight loss, they fail to offer a thorough cleansing program that upgrades health and facilitates additional weight loss. They also fail to make the body/mind connection that allows people to make quantum leaps in health. Our cleansing is more thorough, the nutrition is better quality, and the weight loss is very dramatic. Rather than emphasize "behavior modification," the retreat offers sophisticated nutrition information that allows people to make informed lifestyle choices.
