Calorimetric Studies at the New Hydrogen Energy Laboratory in Japan
Melvin H. Miles (New Hydrogen Energy Laboratory, 3-5 Techno-Park 2 - Chome Shimonopporo, Atsubetsu-Ku, Sapporo-004, Japan) Experiments using China Lake type calorimetric cells produced excess power in three out of three experiments and no excess power in three control studies. A detailed analysis is presented for two experiments using the China Lake cells. Anomalous thermistor signals in Cell A suggest the emission of electromagnetic radiation from the active palladium cathode. Experiments in Fleischmann-Pons type calorimetric cells produced excess power in six out of eight experiments. These studies involved palladium alloy cathodes, co-deposition of palladium and deuterium from the solution, and electromigration using thin palladium wires. Part C of program listing

Compact Steam Reformer Prototype Recent research projects have concerned the evaluation of a prototype compact steam reformer and a plasma-initiated partial oxidation reformer. Steam reforming can be readily integrated with a membrane separator to produce pure hydrogen from high-molecular weight hydrocarbon feeds (e.g., diesel fuel). This process is catalytic and requires an external source of heat to drive the endothermic reforming reaction. The general reaction describing steam reforming of hydrocarbons, e.g., decane, is Steam Reforming of Decane C H + 20 H O = 31 H + 10 CO Partial oxidation reforming produces hydrogen from high-molecular weight hydrocarbon feeds and eliminates the need for external heating by partial consumption of the hydrocarbon feed. A water-gas shift reaction completes the conversion of the hydrocarbon to hydrogen. The general reactions describing partial oxidation reforming of decane, for example, are Partial Oxidation Reforming of Decane
C H + 5 O = 11 H + 10 CO
Water-Gas Shift Reaction 10 CO + 10 H O = 10 H + 10 CO The compact steam reformer prototype is shown in the accompanying photo, mounted on the lab bench with the associated instrumentation and control system that measures the operating parameters. This device was operated under a variety of process conditions to determine the overall thermal efficiency of fuel conversion, the chemical conversion efficiency, and the flow rate of hydrogen produced. The experimental measurements are subsequently compared with computer modeling of the chemical thermodynamics of the reforming reaction and the energy flows coupled to the production process in order to determine the overall energy conversion efficiency.

Global race for "tomorrow's petroleum" heats up

A world powered by hydrogen-the lightest and most abundant element in the universe-is the stuff of Jules Verne's 19th century science fiction. But it is also on its way to becoming 21st century reality, reports the Worldwatch Institute, a Washington, DC-based environmental research organization. The shift to clean hydrogen is being driven in part by rapid improvements in the fuel cell-which uses hydrogen to produce electricity, with water as a byproduct-and by the billion-dollar bets that leading multinationals are now placing on this technology. The move to hydrogen is also motivated by the need to address three of the world's most pressing energy-related problems: worsening urban air pollution, rising geopolitical instability due to oil import dependence, and accelerating climate change from fossil fuel combustion. "The critical question is no longer whether we are headed toward hydrogen, but how we should get there, and how long it will take," said

THE MICRO-CHIP OF THE ENERGY INDUSTRY
Fuel cells are “new” devices used to produce electrical power. After 160 years of development, they are becoming commercially available and are beginning to receive a large amount of public attention. This web site will provide a brief introduction into fuel cells, and describe what they are, what they can do, why they're important, what their commercial implications are, and what Third Orbit Power Systems is doing with fuel cells.
What is a fuel cell? Because fuel cells produce power without combustion, they are considerably more efficient than their internal combustion engine counterparts. Gasoline engines in automobiles are approximately 13 to 25 percent efficient. Amazingly, 75 to 87 percent of the gasoline you purchase does not participate in moving your automobile. A fuel cell attached to an electric motor can be in excess of 40 percent efficient, and fuel cells that can be used in automobiles and other vehicles are being produced with efficiencies of 45 to 58 percent. What can fuel cells do?

Hydrogen is a clean and sustainable form of energy that can be used in mobile and stationary applications. Fuel cells harness the chemical energy of hydrogen to generate electricity without combustion or pollution. Codes and standards ensure the safe use of hydrogen and fuel cells. The vision of a new energy economy based on clean, renewable hydrogen is described in the National Hydrogen Energy Vision document (PDF 1 MB) Although we have a vision for a hydrogen economy , changing the way we produce and use energy is not a simple or overnight task. The National Hydrogen Energy Roadmap (PDF 2 MB) outlines the challenges we face and suggests a path forward to achieve the promise of hydrogen and fuel cells. The first steps toward the hydrogen future are already underway. The

    History
(Gr. hydro, water, and genes, forming) Hydrogen was prepared many years before it was recognized as a distinct substance by Cavendish in 1776. Named by Lavoisier, hydrogen is the most abundant of all elements in the universe. The heavier elements were originally made from Hydrogen or from other elements that were originally made from Hydrogen.
    Sources
Hydrogen is estimated to make up more than 90% of all the atoms or three quarters of the mass of the universe. This element is found in the stars, and plays an important part in powering the universe through both the proton-proton reaction and carbon-nitrogen cycle stellar hydrogen fusion processes that release massive amounts of energy by combining Hydrogen to form Helium Production of hydrogen in the U.S. alone now amounts to about 3 billion cubic feet per year.
