Introduction
Every year during the month of June, many Catholic churches all across the Gulf Coast hold novenas to Our Lady of Prompt Succor. Now, we Catholics pray to Our Lady of This and Our Lady of That, but saying an extra prayer or two to Our Lady of Prompt Succor in June is important. Our Lady of Prompt Succor is who Catholics call upon for protection during hurricane season. We know these dangerous storms brew in the Caribbean and the Gulf. There’s no stopping that. What we hope and pray for is that they stay away from our homes and towns.

All About Hurricanes
What Is A Hurricane?
Hurricanes are part of a family of weather systems known as "tropical cyclones." The word hurricane is from the West Indian word hurricane, meaning "big wind." A hurricane begins its life as a disorganized storm system which forms over warm, tropical waters in the Atlantic. When the storm system become more organized, it is classified as a "tropical depression," and given a number by the National Hurricane Center. If the winds in a tropical depression grow in intensity to 40mph, it is re- classified as a "tropical storm," and it receives a name. When the winds in the storm reach 75mph (120kph), the storm is upgraded to a hurricane. The winds of a hurricane are structured around a central "eye", which is an area that is free of clouds and relatively calm. Around this "eye" area, storm clouds wrap in a counter-clockwise motion. This "eyewall" of clouds, wind and rain, is the most destructive part of the storm. In fact, it is the eyewall that creates the eye, since the rapid spinning clouds in the wall reduce the pressure in the eye and suck out any clouds that may be there. Hurricanes are usually compact storms, with maximum wind velocities extending out 10 to 100km from the eye. Of course, one can still experience gale-force winds as much as 300 miles out from the eye, which is why everyone in the Gulf Coast area is concerned when a hurricane comes a-calling.

KENNA RAINS AFFECTING TEXAS GULF COAST OH, MEXICO Residents of shrimp fishing village San Blas, in shock from one of the biggest storms to hit Mexico's Pacific coast in decades, began to mop up streets and pick up the pieces of their houses on Saturday. Hurricane Kenna rammed through San Blas on Friday, shattering brick walls and ripping off roofs with winds of 145 mph. Then it swept inland, chopping down wide swathes of trees like a gigantic lawn mower. Earth Alert!
Keep track of the latest extreme weather and natural disasters around the world. Listen to Science Live ! to hear more about monster storms. "No one knows for sure how hurricanes get started. The ingredients for cooking one up still remain a mystery." "Size is irrelevant when it comes to ferocity it's all about power." "Asteroid-
triggered hypercanes may have contributed to massive global extinctions millions of years ago."

Kerry Emanuel describes the worst hurricane that could ever happen:
Winds whip around its center at 500 miles an hour. Water vapor, sea spray and storm debris are catapulted into the atmosphere, punching a hole in the stratosphere 20 miles above the Earth's surface. If this meteorologist's nightmare ever made landfall, its super-gale-force winds would flatten forests and toss boulders. A 60-foot storm surge would flood nearby shores. The water vapor and debris could remain suspended high in the atmosphere for years, disrupting the climate and eating away at Earth's protective ozone layer. Emanuel calls this a "hypercane."

Create a Hurricane
No one knows for sure exactly what goes into the making of a hurricane. Below are some basic ingredients. We use size above to illustrate what influences the creation and growth of a hurricane. But in real life size isn't necessarily linked to a hurricane's ferocity.
  • Water must be at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Storms can grow rapidly in size and strength when the water temperatures are higher than this.
  • Strong high-altitude winds, acting like an exhaust system, are needed to push rising hot air away from the storm. However, forceful shearing winds, moving at different speeds and directions at different heights, can disrupt a hurricane's formation or rip apart an existing one.
  • Significant differences in air pressure over distance called a pressure gradient drive the hurricane's growth as air rushes toward the low-pressure center of the storm. The steeper the gradient, the faster the wind blows.
  • Warm and moist air carries evaporated water from the ocean upward into the sky, like an escalator. As the moist air rises and cools, it condenses into rain and releases heat in the process, causing more air to rise and fueling the growth of the storm.
  • Spin, courtesy of the Earth's rotation and a byproduct called the
