It has been structured to achieve a balance of theory, applications and examples. Applied welfare economics is used as an organizing principle. A careful distinction is drawn between the concepts of efficiency and optimality and the students are shown how efficient outcomes are not necessarily desirable outcomes. The very long run is given proper attention, particularly within the concept of sustainability, elucidating and comparing rival concepts, and linking it to developments in ecology and the physical sciences. The analysis of natural resource allocation choices will be presented within the frameworks of various growth theory concepts.
