"How Does It Feel to be a Problem?" the 'unasked question' by W.E.B. Dubois EDUCATIONAL SEGREGATION: MYTH OR REALITY? While "educational segregation" may seem strongly worded and conjure up images of apartheid in South Africa or of the separate schools for African-American pupils prior to Brown v. Board of Education in the United States, this phenomenon continues to exist in Hungary. The remedial schools in which many Roma have been placed because the educational system has failed to address their needs are a poignant example of this form of segregation. Though detailed studies have not been performed, it is estimated that between 40-50% of the students in remedial education programs in Hungary are of Romani origin. This means that a highly disproportionate number of Roma are beginning their academic lives on an unequal footing with their non-Roma peers, and many Romani activists believe this is tantamount to cultural genocide. In Budapest, some of the inner city schools have special programs for the instruction of Romani children. In the 8th district, there is a school for Romani children where the majority of teachers are ethnic Hungarian. The few Roma that become certified teachers usually get recruited into other fields which are more lucrative (such as in administration or politics). Nevertheless, teachers' training programs for young secondary-school educated Roma could be initiated.

The Pleiades 2: The Pleiades in mythology
In the clear and unpolluted night skies of antiquity the distinct heavenly group of the Pleiades star cluster was an object of wonder and interest. Consequently it is a subject of myth and legend in almost every culture on the planet. As the Pleiades are situated close to the ecliptic (within 4 degrees) in the constellation of Taurus, it is a 'seasonal' object in both the northern and southern hemispheres. Also, therefore, occultations of the cluster by the Moon and the planets are frequent. These events were, no doubt, portentious to our superstitious ancestors. Likewise, for our forebears, the annual apparent motion of the cluster would have been highly significant. The heliacal (near dawn) rising of the Pleiades in spring in the northern hemisphere has from ancient times augured the opening of the seafaring and farming season: while its dawn autumnal setting marked the season's end. The Pleiades seem to be the among the first star mentioned in astronomical literature, appearing in Chinese annals of about 2350 BC. The earliest recorded western reference to this cluster is by Hesiod in about 1000 BC. Homer mentions them in the Odyssey, and the Bible has three references to the Pleiades: Job 9:9, Job 38:31 and Amos 5:8. The 19th century poet Alfred Lord Tennyson may not have realised how close to the truth he was when he described, in his poem Locksley Hall, the rising Pleiades, as glittering "like a swarm of fireflies tangled in a silver braid". Recent telescope observations have revealed this most famous of open clusters as being comprised of some four hundred stars wreathed in complex nebulosity.

Cursed with Oblivion Interview with András Nagy of Sear Bliss by Forostar Sear Bliss is the name of a black metal band from Hungary, founded in the autumn of 1993, by András Nagy. Apart from their demo "The Pagan Winter", which was later re-released on CD together with a 12 minute long epic track called "In the Shadow of Another World", Sear Bliss has released 3 albums, and just recorded the 4th. The band had a big break in Holland in 1996, when their debut album "Phantoms" was album of the month in Aardschok, Holland's biggest Hard Rock and Metal Magazine, and it was pretty special since Sear Bliss was also the first ever black metal band that had this honour. This is a short overview of their discography: 1995 - The Pagan Winter DEMO 1996 - Phantoms 1997 - The Pagan Winter + In the Shadow of Another World 1998 - The Haunting 2001 - Grand Destiny (in 2002 re-released via a new label Red Stream records) 2003 - Forsaken Symphony (just recorded and mixed, will be released early this summer) - András, would you tell a bit about Sear Bliss and introduce the bandmembers? Can you describe the band's music for us?
