The growth of Hungarian literature was influenced by the need to establish the Hungarian language in a written form, by national history, and by foreign literary trends. Latinizing of the culture after Hungary's conversion to Christianity delayed the rise of an indigenous literature, and the Hungarian language was first used to translate religious matter, the earliest known text originating around 1200. Increased translation of religious texts and of the Bible during the Reformation as well as a growth in nationalism sparked by the Turkish invasions gave impetus to the development of a literature written in Hungarian. These factors and the influence of humanism helped to produce Hungary's first true poet, Balint Balassi, and the epic poet Miklos Zrinyi. From the mid-18th century to the 1848 War of Independence, literary growth was accelerated by the Enlightenment, romanticism, and opposition to the Habsburgs. Authors' attempts to promote literature and nationhood gradually bore fruit. Gyorgy Bessenyei founded a learned society; Ferenc Kazinczy led successful efforts at language reform; Karoly Kisfaludy founded the Aurora; and newspapers and other journals flourished. The Academy was created in 1830, the National Theater in 1837. Sandor Kisfaludy, his brother Karoly, and Milhaly Vorosmarty revived Hungary's past. The poets Sandor PETOFI and Janos ARANY and the novelists Jozsef EOTVOS and Maurus JOKAI raised poetry and fiction to new heights.

On the occasion of the Previous Hungarian Festival in 1992, several translators of Hungarian Literature, Folk Tales and History were in charge of its symposium of Hungarian Culture. Most of us were freelancers and had rare opportunity to gather. So at a farewell party of the Festival we decided to have a meeting at times. Since October, '93 we have had a regular meeting every two months to exchange information about Hungarian Culture.
We have read and studied the works of the following writers:
Mikszath Kalman, Tamasi Aron,Nemeth Laszlo,Jozsef Attila,Kosztolanyi Dezso, Csath Geza, Konrad Gyorgy, Krasznahorkai Laszlo, Weores Sandor, Darvasi Laszlo, Hay Janos, Kaffka Margit, Esterhazy Peter.
When Konrad Gyorgy and Krasznahorkai Laszlo visited Japan, we had a talk with them and got an information of the present tendency of Hungarian literature and their working activities. Regular Meeting of Bungei Club

Staff Scholars Two New Kluge Fellows Selected By PEGGY PEARLSTEIN Brian P. Taves, a senior cataloger in the Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division (MBRS), and Eniko M. Basa, a senior cataloger in the Serial Record Division, have been selected as the Library’s next Kluge Staff Fellows. Beginning on Oct. 1, Taves and Basa will begin their residency in the Library’s Kluge Center for a period of up to 12 months. Normally, the Kluge Center awards only one Kluge Staff Fellowship annually, but this year, Librarian of Congress James H. Billington concurred with the outside review committee’s suggestion that more than one staff fellowship be awarded because the quality of the applicant pool was so high, said Carolyn Brown, assistant librarian for library services. Taves will research the papers of producer, director, screenwriter and actor Thomas Harper Ince (1882-1924). The papers, which are held in the Manuscript Division, were opened for examination two years ago. The collection contains 13,000 items, spans the years 1913-1964, and documents Ince’s work as a producer as well as the business and legal dealings following his death. Supervising the production of some 800 films in 15 years, Ince played an important role in the transformation of Hollywood into an industry. He departmentalized each activity, allowing for detailed advance planning and budgeting to minimize unexpected costs. Because much of his celluloid output has been lost, the most appropriate method of chronicling Ince’s importance to the creation of the industry is to use his papers to compile a business history.
