"Hummingbirds are capable of exerting strong selection on the nectar rewards of flowers" (Schemke and Bradshaw, PNAS, Oct. 12,1999, vol. 96, n21 11919-11915) The general tendency to frequent red flowers is not because hummingbirds like red flowers, but because bees avoid red flowers and the lack of bees means that there is usually better nectar quantity and quality in red flowers. These species of hummingbirds have been found in California. Hummingbirds Photo courtesy of Shane Whittle LOCATION
There are approximately 338 hummingbird species, all of which occur ONLY in the Western Hemisphere. DIET
Hummingbirds feed every 15 minutes. They feed on sweet nectar from flowers or a sugar mixture from a hummingbird feeder with a 1/4 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water mixed together. This is a 1 to 4 ratio. You do not need to buy the red colored mix sold in stores. The feeders have enough color on them to attract the hummers and the red food dye is just something extra they don't need. Use regular sugar... no honey or substitutes. Hang the feeder in plain view. Once it is discovered you can then move it, in steps to another location. Hummingbirds remember where their source of food is. They will perch while eating allowing you a better view. MIGRATION
Hummingbirds arrive and depart on their annual migrations at different times in different geographical locations. In general, hummingbirds can be expected from April through October in most of the country. The greatest activity might not be experieced at the beginning of the season when females are nesting and caring for their young. When the new generation of hummingbirds leaves the nest, usually from June through July, an increase in numbers and activity may be noted at feeders until the birds head south for the winter. HUMMINGBIRD CELEBRATION 2002 HC Activities Hummingbird Banding Results KRV Hummer Finding Guide ... VISITORS The question is often asked, "How many hummingbirds do I have coming to my feeders?" The following information, including reader comments, is intended to give you a "feel" for the numbers of hummingbirds coming to your feeders. You may find there are often many more hummingbirds present at your feeders than might be thought. Some caveats to keep in mind are: *Not all hummingbirds are Black-chinned Hummingbirds.* *Not all hummingbird individuals or species are the same size which may impact sugar solution intake.* *Not all hummingbird species or individuals are known to drink the same amount of sugar solution*. *The length of the feeding day differs depending upon latitude and longitude.* *Feeding rates and consumption may vary depending upon temperature and other weather related factors.* *Migrating hummingbirds may require more food than non-migrating hummingbirds.* Ruth Russell, Tucson Audubon Society, passes this information on from her husband Steve who has conducted hummingbird research in Southeast Arizona for years.

HUMMINGBIRDS
10–17 August 2003 • Bisbee, Arizona
Instructors: Sheri L. Williamson and Tom Wood
Price: $1650 includes lodging but not meals
Limit: 14 participants COURSE DESCRIPTION This workshop will cover the natural history, behavior, ecology, and identification of North American hummingbirds, with special emphasis on the fifteen species that occur in summer in southeastern Arizona. INSTRUCTORS Tom Wood and Sheri Williamson WORKSHOP LOCATION Mild climate, diverse habitats, and its proximity to Mexico make Bisbee and the surrounding region a birder’s paradise. It’s also an ideal living laboratory for the study of hummingbirds, boasting more regularly occurring species than any comparable area north of Mexico. Late summer is an excellent time to observe resident, migrant, and vagrant hummingbirds as well as a variety of other species from sparrows to raptors. “Monsoon” thunderstorms often lower temperatures and create a second spring, complete with wildflowers, butterflies, and renewed nesting activity.

Hummingbirds and Flowers We invite you to watch and count Rufous Hummingbirds in Western North America. We hope to establish not only arrival dates but peak movement dates throughout our region. We now have two full seasons of Rufous Hummingbird data, most of which is concentrated in western Oregon, Washington and British Columbia (plus more localized counts going back even farther). To report first detection information for 2003, send an email to: celata@pacifier.com Please include the following: 1. location (include latitude and longitude if possible).
2. date of first detection
3. sex (males and females generally arrive on different dates and we want first detection reports for both). It is important that you include all the above information and that it is for the first date you saw hummingbirds in 2002. Since we do not have the capacity to monitor extra-limital (vagrant) reports, those reporting from outside the currently expected range for Rufous Hummingbirds (east of the Rocky Mountains) will not see their reports on any maps found at this site. If you'd like to participate by counting hummingbirds at your feeder daily or counting flowers on bushes (you can do one, the other or both). This year we will continue to use

To Feed A Hummingbird
The sixth in the backyard wildlife series, this NebGuide describes plants and nectar feeding for attracting hummingbirds to your backyard in Nebraska. Ron J. Johnson, Extension Wildlife Specialist

Previous Category Catalog Order Info
Four species of hummingbirds are found in Nebraska, one in the east and three in the west. Ruby-throated hummingbirds migrate through eastern Nebraska in spring and fall, and some nest here, mostly along the Missouri river valley. Typically, ruby-throat migration in Nebraska peaks about May 5-17 and September 2-18, but northward migration may occur from April to June and southward flights from August to early October. Broad-tailed and rufous hummingbirds are seen in the Nebraska panhandle during fall migration from late July to early September with most sightings in early to mid-August. Calliope hummingbirds are seen rarely in the panhandle area. These four hummingbird species spend winter in Mexico and Central America.
What They Eat
The natural diet of hummers is flower nectar, tree sap, and small insects and spiders that are often captured in or near flowers. This natural diet can be supplemented by hummingbird feeders, which dispense a sugar water solution. Flowers blooming through the season, however, are needed when hummingbirds are present to attract them and to provide the natural foods required for a complete diet.

This article appeared in the Winter 2001 newsletter published by the Biology Department at the University of Washington. A flash of scarlet and emerald zooms past me as I poked my sleepy head out of the kitchen door, a vibrant splash of holiday cheer against the sullen winter sky. Suddenly, an indignant Anna's Hummingbird confronts me, beak-to-nose, demanding his breakfast. Shivering, I retreat quickly into the kitchen to prepare warm sugar water.

from a feeder.
Cliff Drake photo.] Equivalent to the average human consuming an entire refrigerator full of food, hummingbirds eat roughly twice their own body weight of food each day to meet their high metabolic requirements. Hummingbirds, among the smallest of all warm-blooded animals, lack the insulating downy feathers that are typical for many other bird species. Due to their small body size and lack of insulation, hummingbirds rapidly lose body heat to their surroundings. Even sleeping hummingbirds have huge energy demands that must be met simply to survive because they cannot forage during the night. So, how can such diminutive birds survive the long cold winter nights in Seattle without eating constantly? To save energy, hummingbirds lower their internal thermostat at night, becoming hypothermic. Their night time body temperatures are maintained at a point, called a

A Field Guide to Hummingbirds of North America by Sheri Williamson Completely new to the Peterson line, this is the first comprehensive guide to the identification of North American hummingbirds. Covering thirty-one species, this book will gratify both serious birders, who need the detail included here to make difficult identifications, and casual birdwatchers, who will appreciate the nontechnical approach. Species accounts discuss plumages, sounds, behaviors, similar species, habitats, distribution, and migration. Range maps show up-to-date breeding and wintering distributions. A chapter on watching hummingbirds includes information on major hummingbird hot spots in the United States as well as advice on attracting and feeding these appealing birds.
