Wm.C.Brown Publishers, Dubuque, Iowa. Welcome to The Human Body. Biology 105 is a one-semester survey course covering many functions of the human body, in wellness and disease. So, at the end of this semester you should know everything there is to know about human physiology, right? NO! Because there's no way you can learn everything in one semester, we have several possible approaches with which to attack this course. More often than not, the instructor decides what's important for you to know, and then proceeds with fast paced lectures which require either a knowledge of shorthand or a tape recorder. Studying for exams, which are often multiple guess or true/false, usually involves mass memorization. Retention of the details a few short months after the course is over is often nearly nil. My two objectives for this course are to:
  • 1) Provide you with an introductory and general understanding of human physiology and
  • 2) Help develop your skills at knowing how to learn, not just what to learn. My teaching preference is to de-emphasize the memorization of facts (you can always look up answers to specific questions in your text), to make the course more interesting by seeking more active student participation, and to help make any knowledge gained more permanent. To do this, I:

Vapid Death
March 25, 1993 Terrible diet and room with no ventilation are being blamed for the death of a men who was killed by his own gas. There was no mark on his body but autopsy showed large amounts of methane gas in his system. His diet had consisted of beans (they said what kind; I forgot) cabbage (and a couple other things). It was just the right combination of foods. It appears that the man died in his sleep from breathing from the poisonous cloud that was hanging over his bed. The ME said, had he been outside or had his windows opened it wouldn't have been fatal but the man was shut up in his near airtight bedroom. He was ``...a big man with a huge capacity for creating [this deadly gas].'' Three of the rescue workers got sick and one was hospitalized.
How To Tell If Your Head's About To Blow Up

Which parts of the body are anaerobic bacteria found, other than in the gut or colon? Why is mRNA production only shown as happening on the left hand strand of the DNA helix? Does the physical act of writing affect your rate of breathing? Why do some sports people never suffer from cramp? Does conditioner really condition your hair? Am I wasting my money buying Pantene? How do you derive a value for the heart rate from the voltage output of the photodetector in a blood pulse oximeter? How do you convert skin calliper readings in to percentage body fat? How does the amount of body fat relate to fitness? When you have a limb amputated, it often feels like it's still there. Why? Roughly what is the minimum fatal electric current, and the maximum safe voltage that can be handled? Why do men go bald? Can facial scarring be prevented?

17. ScienceNet - Biology & Medical Science - Does The Human Body Contain 60 Billion
Does the human body contain 60 billion or 50,000 million cells?
http://www.sciencenet.org.uk/database/Biology/0002/b00763d.html
Does the human body contain 60 billion or 50,000 million cells?
These numbers are nearly the same, since acceptance of the American billion (1,000,000,000) as the standard. Certainly within the limits of accuracy of this sort of estimate, there is little to choose between the two. Although some cells like neurons, and to a large extent striated muscle, do not divide in the normal human adult, many others e.g. blood cells, can and do divide in the body in response to different challenges, and therefore there is not a static cell count within any one person. As each person starts life as a single cell, which divides to make many more, the number of cells depends on the age of a person. A baby, for instance, has fewer body cells than an adult. Also size differences between individuals dictate that different numbers of cells must be present in the organs of different people. Question Number: b00763d This is a stand-alone question which will eventually become integrated into the linked database
