Need some extra help? Build a Web Site the Lazy Way
This work offers an easy way to create a web site from scratch, including a quick lesson in HTML. Tips on how to jazz up the site with graphics, special effects and audio and visual clips are also included. Essential HTML Fast Topics covered include: how to plan your Web site effectively; effective use of hypertext, images, audio and video; layout techniques using tables and lists; how to use style sheets, font sizes and plans for mathematical equation mark-up. Integration of CGI scripts, Java and ActiveX into your Web site is also discussed. HTML in Easy Steps Thanks to specialist software for the creation of Web pages, knowledge of HTML (the Web's very own programming language) is not compulsory for would-be Web designers. But it can be helpful to know how pages are constructed, even if only to see how other people have achieved special effects. And if you do learn HTML you can design pages using nothing more complex than the Notepad that comes as part of Windows.

68. Intermediate HTML

http://www.utexas.edu/cc/training/handouts/htmlinter/
HTML Intermediate
11 January 1999
training@cc.utexas.edu

The University of Texas at Austin HTML is the acronym for HyperText Markup Language, the markup language that is used to create a document for the World Wide Web. With HTML a Web document can contain text, images, tables, links, and a variety of multi-media files. This handout covers some intermediate features of HTML to help you create more sophisticated Web pages.
Creating HTML Documents
HTML documents are plain (ASCII) text format and can be created using any text editor. Macintosh computers come with the text editor SimpleText. PCs contain the editor called Notepad. Microsoft Word may also be used; however when saving your document created with Microsoft Word, change the Save File as Type field to Text Only. That way, none of the formatting used in Word will be included in the document.
Head Section
Title
Every HTML document should have a title. When viewed by a web browser the title is displayed in the title bar of the browser window, it is not actually part of the web page. The title is also used for document identification in search engine databases and when the site is Bookmarked. Choose the title appropriately.

The Gurus Network. A network of gurus . It started as a dream, and perhaps it always *will* be a dream, but now it's a dream that has been given life. Welcome to our dream! The Gurus Network is a collaborative effort, designed and produced by one of the biggest and best collection of lunatics I've ever had the honor of knowing. Not everyone you meet here will be officially in "guru" class yet, but they will be. We are all working towards the same end, a full and proper sharing of knowledge, experience, technique and inspiration. A willingness to dream is the only requirment for membership. Our associate members are typically webmasters of their own domains; they participate here because it's a fun place to be - this is just another way of sharing what they know. You don't need to be a full member to benefit from this site, the Network is built on a philosophy of sharing. Have fun! We certainly plan to. Your pals, -the Gurus- What's new at the GurusNetwork?

    Intermediate HTML Tutorial: Tables
Home Build Programming HTML ... Intermediate HTML Tutorial 2.1 Tables Once you have mastered tables, your site creation will astonish you. Tables are the backbone of any well-designed site. They can make or break a site. Many people ask if they are isolating a % of their user base by using tables. The truth is, some people with older browsers (pre 3) might be isolated, and might not be able to view the site correctly. But the percentage of people using those older browsers is quickly dwindling, and is quite low now. It's always a good idea to offer a text version of the site. If you offer a text version, that gives an alternative for Table-disabled browsers. It's probably not in anyone's best interest to compromise the quality of a site based on 1% or less of users. Tables are divided into Rows and Columns. They are reminiscent of charts or graphs you see often with vertical and horizontal lines. The terminology is nothing new to anyone who has used a Spreadsheet program in the past. Each box within the lines is called a Cell. With HTML, you can create Rows, Columns, Cells, and Table Headers. Table Headers are the same as any other cell, only they are usually centered and displayed in a bold font.

    Adding more: HTML stage II
HTML has other structures apart from paragraphs and section heads . In this part, we're going to look at lists links and visual effects
    Lists
HTML defines three main kinds of list: ordered unordered and discursive
    Ordered Lists
    This is an ordered list:
  • with a list item an item 2, an item 3 and so on
  • The numbering is automatic, so if you delete or insert items, they get renumbered automatically by the client (browser) when the file is next displayed. An ordered list like this is written as: Notice that the whole ordered list is enclosed in tags and that each list item within the list goes in tags. You can have a list within a list, but the numbering/lettering scheme is up to the browser (client): you can't affect how it numbers or letters the items.
    Unordered lists
An unordered list has bullets instead of numbers: you can use this for lists where the sequence of items is not important:
    • 2lb (4 cups) sugar 8oz (8 squares) dark chocolate 1/2pt (8 fl.oz) evaporated milk 2oz (1 stick) butter
(although the end result might be...) In this case, the tags to use to surround the whole list are

    Java as an Intermediate Language
Jonathan C. Hardwick and Jay Sipelstein August 12, 1996 CMU-CS-96-161
    Abstract:
We present our experiences in using Java as an intermediate language for the high-level programming language N ESL . First, we describe the design and implementation of a system for translating V CODE the current intermediate language used by N ESL into Java. Second, we evaluate this translation by comparing the performance of the original V CODE implementation with several variants of the Java implementation. The translator was easy to build, and the generated Java code achieves reasonable performance when using a just-in-time compiler. We conclude that Java is attractive both as a compilation target for rapid prototyping of new programming languages and as a means of improving the portability of existing programming languages. This paper is also available as a compressed postscript file (98 k).

Photoshop Basics and Graphic Design for the Web Description Intermediate HTML explores the leading-edge HTML techniques needed to enhance your Web pages with frames, targets, columns, image maps, and meta tags. Create Columns and Frames
Frames enable Web developers to split pages into multiple panels, each containing a separate HTML document. You will learn not only how and when to use frames to enhance your site's appearance and ease of use, but also how to use more advanced HTML features to lay out your text in columns. Build Image Maps
Would you like to have visitors access your site's pages by clicking on different regions of the same graphic (for instance, clicking California on a map of the United States to display information on California)? If so, you need to create an image map. We will show you how to easily create client-side image maps. Use Tables to Enhance Your Layout
After a quick review of tables, learn how tables can be used to add flexibility to your layout. We'll cover columns, fluid vs. fixed-width, and nested tables.

Links moved The External Links that used to live in the left-hand sidebar have been categorized, annotated, and moved to their own page. The links formerly resided in a hidden div that you could toggle on or off as you desired. Although it was convenient to have access to those links from any page of the site, and although we know some readers will miss that amenity, the change will improve user experience in at least six ways:
    • Per-page bandwidth has been reduced, speeding load times. Some alternative browsing devices (as well as some outdated browsers) ignore anchor tags based on the id element and thus cannot skip navigation. In those browsing environments, under the old system, readers had to manually wade past all those external links to get to the main content. Now they are spared that inconvenience.

In-terms of web page design, tables are probably the most important skill you need to master. Tables allow you to control the overall layout of a web page as seen on any size screen as well as position and control the display of blocks of text or images. As we've mentioned before basic text and images on webpages will simply warp to fit the size of browser window This means that if you try to create a good layout on your machine like this Then the layout effect could be ruined on another size window e.g. Click here to see an example of this in practice Tables allow you to stop this warping and also give extra control to the layout Here is an example from the links page (we've kept a border so you can see the compartments or cells - but you can make this invisible The National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois Beginner's Guide to HTML.
