BOTANY
A number of related areas of study influenced the development of horticulture and agriculture, among them botany, botanic exploration, medical botany, dendrology, arboriculture and forestry. An expanding body of botanical knowledge and the introduction of new plant species have transformed what was cultivated in the garden and on the farm. Printed illustrations made possible the broad dissemination of botanical knowledge and stimulated further discoveries. Special Collections holds over five hundred titles published from the early sixteenth century to the twentieth relating to the botanical sciences. This botanical collection is particularly strong in American publications between 1810 and 1870 and British works from the early seventeenth to the late nineteenth centuries. The collection also has representative examples of European imprints, including French, German, Dutch, Italian, Belgian, and Swiss works. Of these titles over a hundred and fifty relate specifically to trees and forestry. Special Collections also holds over a hundred and fifty titles relating to materia medica and medical botany, including herbals. These collections provide a rich resource for studying the development of botanical science and its integral relationships with horticulture and agriculture. Botany/Horticulture Mini Lab 1 The purpose of the lab is to explore the smallest part of a plant, the plant cell. It will be necessary to come into the classroom to complete the lab since a microscope will be used. A copy of the lab can be seen below. Please see me to schedule a time during which you can be in room C-8 to work on this lab. Plan on spending about 45 minutes to complete lab 1. Botany Lab #1 Cells of Living Plants To complete this lab you will need to spend about 45 minutes in room C-8. All equipment and supplies are in the back of the room. Use the reference material to review cell structures and functions if its been awhile since you studied biology. Be sure to clean up everything before you leave. The best times to accomplish this assignment are: Periods 5 or 8. Before or after school or during lunch. Follow the procedure below. Provide drawings or answers at each number. Put the drawings and answers to the questions in your folder when complete. Part A. Onion Cells Take a one layer of a section of cut onion and hold it so the concave surface is towards you. Tear off the transparent, paper thin layer called the epidermis with forceps. It's a bit like peeling skin after a bad sunburn and should peel easily. Take a piece of the epidermis and prepare a wet mount slide as follows:
  • put a small piece of the epidermis on a clean microscope slide (keep it flat, don't let it fold)

T he GardenWeb Glossary of Botanical Terms currently contains 4400 terms relating to botany, gardening, horticulture and landscape architecture and is regularly updated. The form below allows you to search the glossary for one or more keywords.
New Search:
[see notes] Or Whole Words Notes:
  • This is version: February 4, 2002.
  • If you are looking up names of plants, check the Horti Plex plant database here at GardenWeb.
  • Proper nouns are generally not included in the glossary.
  • Searches are case insensitive.
  • You can browse the glossary, but there are many pages.
  • Multiple keywords can be searched so that each word must appear in each hit (boolean "and") or so that only one of the words must appear (boolean "or").
  • To increase the chances of matching keywords with multiple endings, search for "Word Roots." With this setting, epiphyt will match both epiphyte and epiphytic.
  • You can also limit your search to just terms or just definition.
  • Additional Passes: If there are no hits in the first search, common word endings (-ing, -es, -ed, -ly) are stripped from the keywords and a second pass is made. If there is still no match, all non-word characters are stripped.
  • This glossary was compiled by the editors of GardenWeb from a variety of sources.
