Today agriculture faces a tremendous challenge to provide food, fiber and industrial raw supplies for billions of people at a time when resources are becoming more limiting. Agriculture, meanwhile, has become more technical and complex and qualified college graduates are needed to meet the future demands in this vital field.
Ferrum is located in a rural agricultural area of Southwestern Virginia. The economy of Franklin County is dominated by the agricultural industries of dairy, tobacco, tree fruit, and general farming. This diversity strengthens the broad focus of the curriculum while providing a range of environmental conditions in which to study and observe American agriculture. Faculty: George Byrd

Dean: Prof. Toyoki Kozai Overview The Faculty of Horticulture is composed of three departments; Bioproduction Science, Environmental Science and Landscape Architecture, and Horticultural Economics. The three departments are subdivided into nine divisions. The first department has four divisions; Horticultural Plant Science, Environmental Science for Plant Production, Horticultural Plant Engineering, and Bioresources Chemistry. The second department has three divisions; Landscape Architecture, Landscape Planning and Technology, and Green Environmental Ecosystems. The third has two divisions: Horticultural Business Management and Information Science, and Bioresources Economics. There are thirty-five laboratories attached to these nine divisions. The Graduate School of Science and Technology in collaboration with the Faculty of Horticulture offer graduate degree programs (masters and doctor of philosophy) in various natural science fields. Many Faculty members also teach in the Graduate School. Aside from these degree programs, the Faculty also includes the Special Division of Practical Horticulture that offers a two-year diploma course for teaching theories and practical techniques in horticulture. The University Farms, located in three major horticultural crop growing areas of the country, provide the students and research staff with farm land for education, research experiments and farm practice. The Faculty library, a branch of the university library system, supports the research and teaching activities of the Faculty.

Department of Bioproduction Science Bioproduction refers to the propagation and protection of all useful bioresources that support sustainable agriculture necessary for human existence and man's living biosphere. The subject topic of bioproduction apply not only to every kind of cultivated plant, but also to useful animals such as natural enemies to crop pests and useful microorganisms used in the food industry or as pest control agents. Bioproduction science covers the broad fields of agriculture, biochemistry, biotechnology, food science and bioengineering, and other related academic fields. All the research fields are interconnected in terms of research materials or technical procedures, and therefore it is possible to promote collaborative research activities. The department is organized as a conglomerate of four specialized divisions in order to carry out various bioproduction studies: Horticultural Plant Science, Environmental Science for Plant Production, Horticultural Plant Engineering and Bioresources Chemistry. Each division provides a unique and favorable academic environment for students to study with modern technology and facilities. From the viewpoint of scientific activities, the department employs many leading scientists from various fields, and provides students with excellent educational and research opportunities. Curriculum This department conducts a wide variety of professional courses relating to bioproduction studies. There are about 130 courses available to students within the four divisions. Students are required to complete 124 credits including five compulsory courses (15 credits).

Program Description
The Master of Agriculture (M.Agr.) degree program at a distance is designed to prepare individuals for leadership roles in education, natural resource management, and other professional careers in agriculture and the life sciences. The program is ideally suited for teachers, employees of state and federal agencies, extension agents, and employees of private businesses who need to expand their knowledge and skills to the master's degree level. The M.Agr. degree is a 36 semester hour non-thesis program that emphasizes the development of problem-solving skills and the practical application of theory and research. All core courses within the program are available though web-based instruction to meet the needs of students unable to enroll in on-campus degree programs. Currently, there are three M.Agr. degree program areas:

So You Want a PCA License? Who Needs It? A PCA (Pest Control Advisor's) license is required by any person who offers a recommendation on any agricultural use, who holds himself or herself forth as an authority on any agricultural use, or who solicits sales for any agricultural use of a chemical pesticide. In other words - if you plan on being involved with pest control in any aspect of Horticulture, Agronomy, or Fruit Industries, it is probably a good idea to get a PCA License! It is an excellent addition to any resume and is often required as a qualification employment. What is Required? Requirements for the PCA have been upgraded over recent years to include: A B.S. in an Agricultural Science, Biological Science or Pest Management. (Agricultural Business Management is acceptable with the required coursework.) A series of core courses (58.5 quarter units) which are mandatory (for approved coursework see list below).
