    Description:
    Abstract:
This data layer represents various types of recreational use within the Kachemak Bay watershed including travel routes for wildlife observation boat tours, and horseback riding, as well as point locations of beaches used for landing kayaks. The information was obtained directly from local experts and from the Kachemak Bay State Park map published by National Geographic Maps / Trails Illustrated.
    Purpose:
Distribution maps for Kachemak Bay are intended to provide biologists, managers, and the public with a general idea of species occurrence and resource use within Kachemak Bay and the surrounding area. The maps do not represent exact ranges or current locations of particular uses. They do however, provide information about known resource use areas, and may thus be used to assist in management and conservation decisions within Kachemak Bay.
Some of the information used to compile this coverage was obtained during interviews with local experts, and transferred to mylar overlays on 1:63,360 USGS topographic maps. The information gained from the interview process was only used if it was obtained from a professional in the associated field or corroborated by at least two other sources (i.e., other interviewees). The remainder of the information used to compile this coverage was taken directly from the Kachemak Bay State Park map published by National Geographic Maps / Trails Illustrated. The information on that map was based on public use data gathered by the State Parks division of the Alaska Department of Natural Resources. For additional recreational use data, please refer to the data layer called "Non-Consumptive Recreational Use (polygon)".

The scenic beauty for which these areas were set aside prevails over much of the Forest. Red sandstone formations of Red Canyon rival those of Bryce Canyon National Park. Hells Backbone Bridge and the view into Death Hollow are breathtaking. From the top of Powell Point, it is possible to see for miles into three different states. Boulder Mountain and the many different lakes provide opportunities for hiking, fishing, and viewing outstanding scenery.
Recreational opportunities on the Forest are highly diversified. Visitors may enjoy camping, hunting, viewing scenery, hiking, horseback riding, and fishing in very primitive settings away from the sight and sounds of motorized vehicles. Others, who prefer more developed areas and less primitive conditions, may enjoy vehicle-based activities such as camping, picnicking, resort lodging, recreation residence, sledding, skiing, hunting, gathering forest products, viewing interpretive exhibits, hiking, viewing scenery, driving for pleasure, snowmobiling, biking, horseback riding, canoeing, sailing, swimming, water skiing, and fishing.
Wilderness: The Forest has 83,000 acres of wilderness in three areas: Pine Valley, Box-Death Hollow, and Ashdown Gorge. Pine Valley and Ashdown Gorge offer opportunities for solitude, horseback riding, and hiking. Box-Death Hollow offers opportunities for solitude and hiking, but the terrain is much too rough for horses.

R ed Cedar is a therapeutic horseback riding, camping and recreational facility that serves more than 1,195 adults and children with disabilities each year and more than 666 non-disabled. Located at 3900 Hursh Road in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the 57-acre facility includes a 10-acre lake surrounded by woodlands and meadows. White fenced pastures line the long drive leading to the equestrian center which has a heated indoor and outdoor arena, and stall for up to 50 horses. Nearby are cabins and nestled in the woodland are large group tents and they are fully accessible so that campers can experience the fun and adventure of camp. We provide a variety of horseback riding lessons to able-bodied riders and therapeutic lessons to those individuals with disabilities year-round. Riding is particularly beneficial for people who have impaired mobility because the movement of a walking horse's back duplicates the "normal" movements made by an able-bodied person when walking. This movement helps to strengthen and build muscles in a natural way that cannot be achieved through traditional physical therapy.

Horseback riding can be a rewarding adventure for the entire family. Host John Nickel and friend discuss the pleasures of equestrian pursuits and offer advice on how to seek out good riding instruction.
Horses excite a sense of wonder in children. Under the right kind of supervision, allowing youngsters to gain firsthand experience with horses from an early age can form the foundation for lifetime rewards.
Teaching horses, or riding-school horses, have been trained so that they tend to remain calm and sedate even with inexperienced riders.

Horseback riding is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and one of the best things about it is that it's never too late to learn to ride. Owning a horse can be a costly proposition, but if you're not ready for that kind of commitment, you can still enjoy many of the pleasures of horsemanship through riding instruction and organized trail-riding through one of your local stables. DIY Family Outdoors host John Nickel discusses some of the basics of horseback riding as a family endeavor and gives advice about finding a reputable stable in your area.
