Bald Eagle Days
Family Fishing Fair Interpretive Program ... Visitor Center
A nature-lover's paradise, this 8,000-acre park is famous for the exceptional beauty of its fall colors and for its bald eagles during the winter. In addition to enjoying the spectacular view of the Illinois River and its backwaters from several points atop the bluffs, visitors can take advantage of a variety of year-round recreational opportunities, including horseback riding, camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, and boating. Pere Marquette's Visitor Center, opened in October 1997, welcomes you with a three-dimensional map of the park, a 300-gallon aquarium, and wealth of other displays and exhibits concerning the Illinois River, wildlife habitat, local history, and geology. History The history of Pere Marquette State Park centers around that of the Illinois River. The forces that formed the river can be traced to ancient glaciers that pushed their way down over most of Illinois, but stopped just short of the park land. In the path of the glaciers and their meltwaters, a rich network of streams and rivers were formed, and tons of soil and bedrock were ground to dust which rose and blew up against the hillsides. These ancient layers of wind-blown soil, called Loess (pronounced "less") can be seen along the roads and trails of Pere Marquette.

Rodeo has derived its traditions from cowboy roots. While strongest in areas where cattle ranching is strongest (the prairie provinces), though it has a strong followings in all regions of Canada. It also forms one of the strongest stereotypes of a "rugged Canadian" (right up there with Mountie, and lumberjack). Rodeo preserves the traditions of ranching, where horses are used for both transportation and to control cattle in herds, and cattle need to be controlled in order to brand them, so they can be identified if lost or stolen. The various competitions compare how well cowboys measure up in key skill areas. Over the years, a number of the rules have changed, to make the competitions safer and easier for the animals. Many of the animals used in rodeo are bred for a specific competition, especially the bucking stock. See link to

A trip to picturesque Morrison-Rockwood State Park offers many memorable experiences. A large sign in the shape of Illinois, fashioned from angle iron by a blacksmith, greets visitors at the entrance. Once inside, choose from a variety of recreational opportunities. Beautiful Lake Carlton, a stream-fed reservoir, features an abundance of ducks and geese, and is considered a prime location for fishing. Or, plan a family outing at the Lakeview picnic area, or just do some bird watching among the hickory, ash, oak and walnut trees. History The Morrison-Rockwood State Park is comprised of 1,164 acres, located north of Morrison in Whiteside County. It was established in 1971 and officially opened for "day use only" that same year. The park is named for the city of Morrison and a combination of nearby Rock Creek and the heavily wooded park area Rockwood. Lake Carlton, a focal point of the park, is a watershed impoundment which was constructed in 1969 by building a 38-foot high, 1,800-foot long earthen dam across a stream. The lake was named in memory of L. Carlton Anderson, a local citizen who actively promoted the park and was an important civic and conservation leader. Improvements have continued to be made in the conservation area, making it one of the most popular recreation spots in northern Illinois.

Correllus State Forest
Manuel F. Correllus State Forest Martha's Vineyard
Correllus State Forest occupies over 5,100 acres in the center of Martha's Vineyard. It was created in 1908 as the "Heath Hen Reserve," in an attempt to prevent the bird's extinction. Sadly, the last heath hen (an eastern subspecies of the prairie chicken) was seen in 1932. Today it is managed for passive recreation, mostly hiking and cycling on its 15 miles of bike paths. It is also the focus of one of the largest environmental restoration projects in the country. As part of a cooperative effort, the State Forest is now working to bring back the site's native ecosystem. The Great Plain that forms much of Martha's Vineyard supports an unusual concentration of rare species and extensive examples of several uncommon sand-plain communities, including grasslands, heathlands, barrens, and woodlands, dominated by mixed oak-pine. It was the abundance of woodlands and shrublands that enabled the heath hen to persist here long after they had died out elsewhere in the northeast. Although widespread land clearing began on Martha's Vineyard soon after European settlement in the 17th century, settlement and agriculture were focussed around the perimeter of the island, and the area that is now the state forest remained wooded with forest and scrublands for centuries.

numerous areas and marked trails for this growing recreational use door enthusiastwho enjoys hunting or fishing, hiking, canoeing, camping or horseback riding.
http://www.adirondacks.com/winterhorseback.html
Horseback riding for pleasure has made a phenomenal growth in recent years. In large cities, suburban areas and rural communities vast numbers of people from almost every walk of life are learning to ride or are riding at present. In New York State we are indeed fortunate in having numerous areas and marked trails for this growing recreational use. State owned lands under the jurisdiction of the Department of Environmental Conservation provide a multitude of opportunities for the out door enthusiast who enjoys hunting or fishing, hiking, canoeing, camping or horseback riding. These lands consist of forest perserve holdings within the Adirondack and Catskill Parks as well as state reforestation areas and wildlife management areas across the state and are available for public use. Many of these trail networks provide support facilities such as hitching rails, horse shelters, lean-tos for the rider and adequate parking for cars and trailer. State lands fulfill a growing need for recreational trail riding and you are invited to use and enjoy them. Consistent with the multiple use management concept on publicly owned lands, you will encounter other recreational users, such as hunters, hikers, campers, and the like. Common courtesy is all that is required to ensure that such encounters are pleasant ones. We invite you to browse through our, soon to be, largest New York Horseback Riding directory online!
