Welcome to Therapeutic Horseback Riding and the Feldenkrais Method
My name is Sandy Kessler, and I use horseback riding and the Feldenkrais Method as a way to help people increase their physical, mental, and emotional self awareness, for improving both their own movement and their personal and interpersonal functioning. This method has been proven effective with people of all types: From children with birth defects and victims of accidents and war, to stressed out yuppies and professional groups interested in improving their teamwork. We use experimentation and re-education to increase self-awareness and inner perception. Click on the horse to go to the next page. Riding

Horseback Riding
A horse's motion is three-dimensional: from side to side, forwards and backwards, up and down. It is indeed quite similar to the way a person walks and can teach us much about our own movements and how to improve them. A rider on the back of a moving horse is constantly receiving information through their own muscles, bones and joints about the horse's movement and their own. Riding teaches a person to activate and use various parts of the body, in new and varied ways, acquiring skills that in the course of time become an integral part of his life. Riding entails active involvement and self-discipline, improves the rider's self-image, balance and spatial orientation and encourages his independence and decision-making abilities. So does

The objective of these experiences is to build self-esteem, confidence and physical development, thereby enhancing active participation in all aspects of community life. As a national role model, the Center promoted the concept of ability through integration, public awareness and education. Founded in 1985, the National Ability Center is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. Introducing RideAble
We are RideAble, an equestrian program for people with disablilites. Based in Eugene, Oregon, we are an incorporated non-profit organization, EIN 93-1172229, and our staff has been giving lessons for over 10 years. Our primary focus is to provide riding opportunities for special needs people. Royal Heritage Farm, located on the south western outskirts of Eugene, provides a home for the program. This facility includes an indoor arena, a summer out-door arena, a permanent mounting ramp and platform and other amenities. Plans to develop outdoor trails are in the works. We consider ourselves a recreational/therapeutic program. While some of our students come primarily for the therapeutic benefits of horseback riding, others are seriously expanding their riding skills. Some of the disabilities our riders have are spinal cord injury, head injury, orthopedic disabilities, stroke, mental disabilities, cerebral palsy and hearing impairment. We teach riding lessons in an indoor arena and also take trail rides (weather permitting in this soggy area of the country). In the summer and early fall months we take students off site to special equestrian trails in the area. We have been offering an annual summer camp trip since 1997, and for many of us it is the high point of the year! We have a core group of people that organize, fund-raise, teach classes, groom, exercise and train therapy horses and do the many volunteer jobs that it takes to run a program like ours. We offer private individual lessons and small group classes of up to four. Groups are carefully selected to include riders with similar skills and stamina. We have been building our ridership base and support system over time. Our staff is made up mostly of volunteers and includes people with disabilities. Our Instructors are both CHA certified and our Head Instructor is fluent in sign language. We also have a consulting Physical Therapist to help us with evaluating the special needs of our riders.

Plowshares #28
Horseback Riding
Horseback riding is both recreational and therapeutic for many people with disabilities. Horseback riding is an excellent, refreshing form of recreation for people with ambulation disabilities. Older, good natured horses with much experience should be used to ensure the safety of the rider. Therapeutic horseback riding programs around the country have been designed to improve the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of participants. Jacob Lee is an eight year-old rider from Lafayette, Indiana, who has cerebral palsy and scoliosis. Jacob began riding horses for recreation four years ago and enjoys being outside with the horses. Lonnie and Roseanne Lee, Jacob's parents, said that he began riding horses for recreational purposes, but after months of riding, they found that Jacob no longer needed to wear his back brace for scoliosis. The rhythm and balance of the horseback riding helped improve Jacob's physical condition!

Recreational/Therapeutic Horseback Riding ...For a person with disabilities, riding on a horse can mean reaching wilderness areas not accessible to a wheelchair. An individual who has sustained a head injury may discover that the act of learning to move with the rhythm of the horse gently increases their own sense of balance. A Downs Syndrome child may find a loving friend in her horse. RideAble serves children, youth and adults with a wide range of disabilities. Based in Eugene, OR, we have been in operation since 1995.
