It will explore the processes by which migrants re-invent their identities and understandings of their traditions. We will develop answers to the questions of (1) what are the changing roles and prospects of these four groups in Hong Kong? (2) Why are they carries of processes of globalisation? (3) Are these ethnic minorities cosmopolitan? (4) What are the social, cultural and political issues arising from their residence in Hong Kong? Your active participation and studying the reading material in advance of lectures is a requirement for successful participation in this course. In addition to the weekly lectures, which will include discussion, short student presentations and visual displays, there will be four tutorial sessions. In three tutorial sessions, groups of students will present background readings, provide a summary of the texts, link them to the course subject, and outline the main points for discussion.

    HISTORY
Disputes over former treaties and the Chinese boarding of the British ship Arrow started the Second Opium War (also known as the Lorcha Arrow War), which lasted from 1856 co 1858. The Convention of Beijing, signed in 1860, formally ended the hostilities and granted the British a perpetual lease on the Kowloon Peninsula. The United Kingdom was concerned that Hong Kong could not be defended unless surrounding areas were also under British control; in 1898, it executed a 99-year lease of the New Territories, significantly expanding the size of the Hong Kong colony. In the late 19th century and early 20th centuries, Hong Kong developed as a warehousing and distribution center for U.K. trade with southern China. After the end of World 'War II and the communist takeover it mainland China in 1949, hundreds of thousands of people emigrated from China to Hong Kong. This helped Hong Kong become an economic success and a manufacturing, commercial, and tourism center. High life expectancy, literacy, per capita income, and other socioeconomic measures attest to Hong Kong's achievements over the last four decades.

    Hong Kong History
By : Christ Patten, on 30/06/97 Chinese Version Since 1898, the year 1997 has been marked down in the calendar as a date of special significance, and today we are all hearing a lot about history. Films are being made, articles written, books published. Two themes tend to predominate, 'End of Empire' and 'Return of the Dragon'. Under the first, Hong Kong is looked at nostalgically, the last significant outpost and one of the most singular successes of Britain's imperial adventure. 1997 is the end of that story. The second theme is also largely about what is ending in 1997: the imperialist, opium-pushing intrusion into China, the end of humiliations inflicted on a weak Chinese government in the nineteenth century. It is very easy to become partisan on either of these interpretations, to overlook the truth in each, to overlook Hong Kong's own history, to overlook what Hong Kong now is. Whatever the arguments about the rights and wrongs of the imperialist past, what has happened in Hong Kong is the coming together of two civilizations. The mostly Chinese men and women of this community have drawn on their own culture, but also on the ideas, the laws, the education and the arts of many other lands, adopting and adapting them to the growing needs of this city and its people. They have fashioned their own, usually successful solutions to maintaining a lively, harmonious society under unparalleled constraints of space and population density. This is not the debris from the collision of two civilizations but a new creation of them, offering fresh ideas to both.

    History
After 1949, when the Communists took control of mainland China, hundreds of thousands of refugees crossed the border, making Hong Kong's urban areas some of the most densely populated in the world. Problems of housing, health, drug addiction, and crime were the target of aggressive governmental programs, and Hong Kong's long-standing water problem was eased by the construction of an elaborate system of giant reservoirs and the piping in of water from China. In May, 1967, Hong Kong was struck by a wave of riots and strikes inspired by China's Cultural Revolution. The government reacted firmly, and, although the Chinese retaliated by briefly stopping the piping of water and by attacking British representatives in Beijing, relations between Hong Kong and China soon resumed the surface harmony that had existed since the late 1950s. The crackdown in 1989 at Tiananmen Square in Beijing inspired fears that China would not respect Hong Kong's autonomy, and in the next few years many business people left, affecting Hong Kong's economy. In 1991, Hong Kong's first direct legislative elections (which accounted for about 30% of the seats) were won almost entirely by liberal, prodemocracy candidates, and no pro-China candidates were elected.

    Its modern history...
Prior to the arrival of the British, Hong Kong was a small fishing community and a haven for travellers and pirates in the South China Sea. During the Opium Wars with China in the Nineteenth Century, Britain used the territory as a naval base. Following the end of the first Opium War , the Treaty of Nanking in 1842 ceded Hong Kong to Britain in perpetuity. Sir Henry Pottinger, whose name can be found on a street in Central district, was its first governor. Following additional conflicts with the Chinese in 1860 Britain gained Kowloon and Stonecutters Island. In 1898 Britain acquired the New Territories on a 99-year lease. Settlement in the territory grew slowly with the population rose from 32,983 in 1851 to 878,947 in 1931. During the teens and twenties of this century, Hong Kong served as a refuge for exiles from China following the establishment of the Chinese Republic in 1912. After Japan seized Manchuria in 1932, the Sino-Japanese war broke out in 1937. Throughout the late thirties, as Japan advanced into China, hundreds of thousands of Chinese took refuge in Hong Kong. It was estimated that some 100,000 refugees entered in 1937, 500,000 in 1938 and 150,000 in 1939 - bringing Hong Kong's population at the outbreak of World War II to an estimated 1.6 million. It was thought that at the height of the influx, about 500,000 people were sleeping in the streets.

Hong Kong Hong Kong's dynamism is unforgettable. From the vantage point of Victoria Peak, overlooking the world's busiest deepwater port, you can see a city geared not only to making money but feeling good about it. At night, it's like looking down into a volcano. Despite its British colonial past, Hong Kong has always stuck to its roots and the culture beneath the glitz is pure Chinese. That didn't stop locals from feeling apprehensive about being re-united with the motherland when the British handed the colony back to China in 1997, but their unease has largely evaporated. Visitors often find it takes a few days in Hong Kong to get accustomed to the whirlwind pace. If you need some respite, check out the Outlying Islands for a change of tempo and scene.

May 28, 1923: A BULL RUSH FROM CHINA Owing to banditry in the interior, thousands of wealthy Chinese are fleeing to Hong Kong, Shanghai and other cities situated in foreign concessions, where their life and liberty are safe. With them comes their cash. They are reported to be looking for good investments. In Hong Kong there was such a rush to buy taxicab stock that two prospective investors were injured and subsequently removed to a hospital with broken arms. November 27, 1939: THE DEATH OF HONG KONG Hong Kong was once a valve controlling the flow of fabulous trade out of South China. Then the Japanese got a valve of their own farther up the pipe at Canton, and Hong Kong became a comparatively dead city. It is still one of the most beautiful ports in the worldits harbor is like a Wedgwood plate full of sugar bunsbut it is now a negligible trade center, and Britain plans to abandon it at the drop of a bomb. September 3, 1945: HIP-HIP, HURRAH! In the debate on Empire foreign policy in the House of Commons last week, it was just as hard to tell the difference between the new socialists in office and the old Tories in opposition. The issue was Hong Kong, Britain's Chinese crown colony. Did Britain mean to keep it or give it up? First socialist Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin answered bluntly: "We have taken steps to receive the surrender of the Japanese forces in Hong Kong." Then Prime Minister Clement Attlee made the matter crystal-clear: "Plans for re-establishing British administration in the colony are fully prepared."

For the greater part of recorded history, this rocky archipelago - an erratic collection of barren ocean rock - was politely ignored by the rest of the world. A handful of farmers living in walled villages, such as Kat Hing Wai, spent their days quietly watching the rice grow, fishing, visiting the temple, and playing mahjong. It was too hot in the summer, dank in the winter, and without any horseracing, things were pretty ordinary. Then the British arrived.

The MIT Club of Hong Kong is one of the longest-operating MIT alumni/ae clubs outside of the United States. According to the Association of Alumni and Alumnae of MIT , the Club was established 50 years ago. Throughout its existence, the Club has been capably run by many different individuals for the purpose of advancing the interests of the Institute and serving the MIT community in Hong Kong.
In the past, the Club had held dinner receptions for Dr. Charles Vest, MIT President , as well as various deans and professors of the Institute. Back in 1980, a dinner was held in which world-renown architect Mr. I.M. Pei was guest of honor. In 1992, the Club in conjunction with the MIT Sloan School of Management held a 2-day symposium, entitled Managing Technology: The Role of Technology in Asia in the 21st Century featuring Sloan School Dean Lester Thurow . More recently, the Club sponsored a dinner talk given by Mr. Robert Metcalfe, a pioneer in Internet technologies. But one of the more popular functions ever organized by the Club remains to be the MIT Invitational Sports Day . It started in 1982 as a family day held for Club members and has since become an annual event participated by other university alumni clubs and their members.

Country Info Hong Kong Introduction Hong Kong General Data Hong Kong Maps Hong Kong Culture ... Hong Kong Time and Date Hong Kong History Back to Top The first permanent settlement in what is today Hong Kong probably occurred about 2,000 years ago during the Han dynasty (206 bc-ad 220). Little growth took place until the 19th century, owing to China’s imperial policy of inward development, with a focus away from developing the resources of coastal areas. Also, despite Hong Kong’s proximity to the port city of Guangzhou, all foreign trade with China was controlled through a small Chinese merchant guild in Guangzhou known as the Co-hong, and contact with foreigners was highly restricted. Before the British arrived in the mid-19th century, Hong Kong Island was inhabited only by a small fishing population, with few features to recommend it for settlement. It lacked fertile soil and fresh water, was mountainous, and was reputed to be a notorious haunt of pirates. But it was a relatively safe and undisturbed base for the British merchants who in 1821 began to use the fine harbour to anchor opium-carrying vessels. The great commercial and strategic significance of this deep, sheltered harbour, possessing east and west entrances and lying on the main trade routes of the Far East, was quickly realized. The British, who wished to expand their trading opportunities along China’s coast, became interested in Hong Kong in the early 19th century. They also desired a location to serve as a naval resupply point, similar to the role Singapore was playing at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. The trade of opium, a highly profitable product for British merchants and eventually an illegal import into China, led to the Opium Wars and Britain’s acquisition of Hong Kong. In 1839 the Chinese Special Commissioner imprisoned some British merchants in Guangzhou and confiscated opium warehouses. The merchants were released, but the British foreign secretary, Lord Palmerston, dispatched naval forces and war ensued. The British had a superior naval force and won easily, occupying Hong Kong Island in 1841.
