Surviving a Hurricane
Hurricane Mitch has devastated Honduras: over seven thousand dead, another eight thousand still missing and more than one million homeless. It has also threatened the survival of one of the world's most endangered cultures. Community Aid Abroad's Justin Coburn visited the Tawahka in the weeks following Central America's worst natural disaster in more than two hundred years. The Tawahka are Honduras' smallest indigenous population, numbering just over nine hundred. They live in a biospheric reserve along the Patuca River, in Central America's most isolated region. Theirs is an oral culture; knowledge and history is passed on via the spoken word. Thus with the death of each Tawahka elder, another source of knowledge and wisdom is lost. Last week Enrique Maclin Mejia died. Eighty-seven years old, he was one of many to have fallen ill following the hurricane. When news came through of Don Enrique's death I was with his grandson, Edgardo Benitez. We had just spent a very difficult week assessing hurricane damage and delivering food aid throughout the Tawahkan communities. During the next few days Edgardo shared some of his great sense of loss. The man who had educated him about their world was dead. It was his grandfather who some years ago - as the survival of the Tawahkan culture was increasingly threatened by the encroachment of loggers and cattle farmers - had urged Edgardo to take the struggle to preserve their culture to the rest of the world. And until the hurricane, this struggle had had some success. Three years ago UNESCO declared 2,350 square kilometres of their land a self-managed biospheric reserve, and funding was obtained to convert their language into written form and to train Tawahkas to teach in their own language.

The Indigenous Peoples of the world are the exclusive guardians of large wilderness habitats upon which modern societies depend (plants, animals, climate, water). Their lifestyles are models for the practices of conservation and sustainable consumption of biological resources. Maintaining and understanding the earth's most biologically diverse areas is dependent on maintaining the cultural diversity and integrity of Indigenous peoples who live there. It has been documented many times over in international development literature that one of the best ways to break the cycle of poverty is to empower the women of any developing country. If women can obtain more education, avoid early pregnancies and the subsequent burden of overly large families, and learn a skill to enable them to earn more money, then the whole country benefits because a significant positive change will have taken place in the social structure. Worldwide, the mean educational achievement of girls is 40% below that of boys, yet as women, they are the primary educators of the next generation. Research shows that educating girls yields the highest rate of return compared to any other investment in human development. refer a friend The Maya civilization was one of the grandest in the history of the world and the reason for its collapse is still shrouded in mystery. The ancient Maya occupied a vast geographic area in Central and South America from around 2000 BC until 1500 AD. The Mayan culture extended to parts of what is now Mexico, Honduras, and El Salvador, and most of Guatemala and Belize. During the Classical Period which lasted from the third to the ninth century, Maya civilization built awe-inspiring temples, pyramids and cities and formed a complex social and political order. Many of the remnants in Tikal reveal the culture of this ancient civilization. The Mayan culture excelled in many different fields, and testaments of their achievements are found throughout the area. Today descendents of the old Maya, or the Indigenous as the are locally referred to, account for more than 50% of the Guatemalan population. Their present culture is vibrant and thriving, best shown by the many traditionally dressed woman and children seen along the streets in the entire country. Weaving is one of the outstanding Maya craft, an ancient art that has survived uninterrupted for centuries and is now becoming famous all over the world. The Maya also make baskets, pottery and wood carved of animals, saints and brightly-painted toys and chests.

ABSTRACT: Participation of local residents in natural resource management is essential for successful conservation efforts. This research conducted in the zone of influence of the proposed National Park Punta Izopo on Honduras' north coast is a case study on the possibility of involving local residents in the processes of conservation. An assessment of three behavioral componentsattitudes, expectations and knowledge, was conducted as a first step in the development of a participatory conservation process.

About 2 days ago on CNN I just saw a little report on the Garifundio (or something quite similar, I couldnt write it down at that moment) people. If I understood well, I didn´t see it complete, they are descendents of africans brought to America. Again, If I understood well, they live in Belize. Of course, the interesting thing is that they have a flag. (from up to down): equal stripes yellow, white, black. Proportions, as always in moving flags, were a little difficult to tell, but it seemed to me that the flag was not very "long" (as 1:2) I would rather say it looked like 3:4.

Research profile Kees Jansen I undertake research on how the relations between public and private organizations in developing countries affect technology innovation. The research compares contrasting trajectories of conventional and biotechnology-based agricultural technologies. Concrete topics are institutionalized perspectives and social choice in crop protection, the role of grades and standards in the social construction of technology (particularly environmental and fair trade labels), and national and international regulatory regimes of pesticide trade and use.
Regionally, research takes place in Latin America (Honduras and the Andean region), and to a lesser extent in Benin-Ghana and Europe. Conceptual and methodological interests relate to the fields of political ecology, critical realism, cultural gird-group theory, development studies, rural sociology, and science , technology and society studies. Technological interests relate to the cultivation of coffee, bananas, tule, and tropical crops in general, all forms of pest control (pesticides, IPM, biological control, biological agents) and the application of biotechnology in agriculture.

Honduras Honduras was the original banana republic and is still one of the least developed and industrialized countries in Central America. Despite its turbulent political history, the poor cousin of the region has barely registered on the Western radar, apart from its short role in the 1980s as a breeding ground for US covert operations. The slow pace, natural beauty and low-profile tourism make it particularly appealing to travelers (well-armed with insect repellent) who enjoy getting off the beaten track. However, the country was devastated by one of the strongest hurricanes of the 20th century - Hurricane Mitch in October 1998. Thanks to international relief efforts, much of the infrastructure has now been repaired and tourism has returned to pre-Mitch levels.
