DINO LAND TRAVELS IN PALEONTOLOGY LUNGAMENTE VIVE IL DINOSAURIO IN ITALIA By Steve Brusatte Italy's first dinosaur discovery-Scipionyx, the amazing little theropod with organ imprints! Lungamente vive il dinosaurio il Italia? For those of you who understand Italian, you realize that this means "long live the dinosaur in Italy." How can this be? The boot country’s first reported dinosaur discovery in its long history was announced earlier this year, and its second was just found in Trieste, a city near the Yugoslav border. Despite the fact that the history gluttoned Italians boast only two dinosaur discoveries (although the first, Scipionyx, is complete with rare organ imprints) they love the terrible lizards-and paleontology in general, that is. This last July I had the exciting opportunity to visit Italy. My parents were married 20 years ago, in 1979, and for an encore of their original European honeymoon they planned a trip to Spain. This fell through, which worked out for the better, as we were able to travel to the land of our cultural heritage-Italy. From the second I heard about the trip I was destined to make the anniversary trip-which I was lucky to be taken along on-into a full-fledged paleontological extravaganza! Although I didn’t get to accomplish every goal, the trip provided a worthwhile experience in paleontology! On July 15 my family and I left Chicago’s O’Hare Airport (where, by the way, you are able to view a cast of the Field Museum’s Albertosaurus skull if you are lucky enough to maze through the busy crowds and long lines to find it). 8 hours later we landed in Zurich, Switzerland. In our one day in Zurich I decided not to drag my family to any dinosaur exhibits, but instead to wait a bit, for a few days, until we reached Florence. Instead, the wait lasted much shorter than I expected, and it was my father, not me, who noticed the first paleontological hot spot.

The Genetic Pathway and Developmental Evolution
send me this paper

A 7 page discussion of genetic pathways, specifically the direction of the orderly expression of specific gene subsets, a process which is controlled by tissue-specific transcription factors. Specific DNA target sequences are bound by these transcription factors and, in turn, interact with one another on either a cooperative basis or an antagonistic basis to control expression of the gene subsets. This interaction is aided as well by extracellular signaling molecules which both control and are controlled by the transcription factors. Ties these basic observations together with a review of research on species as diverse as Drosophila melanogaster and zebrafish. An additional 2 pages are appended on this paper which identify several references which could be applicable in an expanded review of this subject. Bibliography lists 13 sources.

It is the only institution in Croatia that focuses on systematic geologic and paleontologic study of the Quarternary period with the aim of reconstructing changes in the climate, vegetation, fauna, and the evolution of hominids. The institute's collections, which are a result of years of field research, include pieces from Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic cultures, fossile vertebrates, and world-famous finds of hominids such as the Neanderthal men from the Vindija cave and anatomically modern people from Velika peæina, Veternica, Bezdanjaèa and Vuèedol. The richness and diversity of the collections and the institute library provide ample reasons for collaboration with other related institutions at home and abroad. The activities of the Institute also include systematic information processing, education, and popularization of geoscience.

The Importance of Phylogenetic Relationships in Evolutionary Biology
send me this paper

A 5 page contention that phylogenetic relationships are a critical component of evolutionary biology. Indeed, it is upon our knowledge of phylogeny which we base much of our theory of evolution. Even in “Origin of Species”, that infamous production of an earlier century which many consider synonymous with the concept of evolution, Darwin relies heavily on his knowledge of phylogeny to assess the characteristics of plants and animals which he observed on his scientific voyage on the “Beagle”. Contends that this is only one example, of the many interrelationships of phylogeny and evolutionary theory which have occurred over time. It, along with the somewhat antiquated concept of ontogeny recapitulating phylogeny, however, illustrates the importance of phylogeny to evolutionary theory. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Father of us all? versão em português Monday, Jul. 15, 2002
Time In life, the creature probably resembled a chimpanzee more than anything else. It moved through a lakeside landscape of grasslands and forest searching for food, accompanied by small bands of its fellows, most likely, and keeping a sharp eye out for pythons, crocodiles and saber-toothed cats. This animal probably shared the forest with apes and monkeys and, like them, spent some time up in the trees. It may have walked upright, which apes rarely do for very long at a stretch. But at a casual glance, it would have seemed to our eyes like just another chimp. Given the harsh conditions that exist today at the excavation site, a place called Toros-Menalla, it's a wonder that the fossil was found at all. This brutally hot, dune-spattered landscape lies in the middle of the Djurab Desert, about four days' drive north of N'Djamena, the capital of Chad. Rusting pieces of battle tanks are scattered all about, leftovers from 30 years of civil unrest. Windstorms blow up frequently, sandblasting everything in sight — including the scientists, who have to seek refuge inside their tents for days at a time. "They really are the most unimaginable field conditions," says Harvard paleontologist David Pilbeam, who has worked with Brunet.

(Updated Sept. 25, 1996) The specimens depicted here (no enlargement available) are lower jaws of Eosimias centennicus one of a growing number of diverse primate taxa from Eocene deposits scattered throughout eastern and central China. These minute specimens (little larger than a Lincoln head cent) have features that clearly align with the higher, anthropoid rather than lower, prosimain primates. Dated approximately 45 million years ago these and similar Chinese fossils push higher primate origins back several million years and out of Africa into Asia. The presense of primitive higher primates such as Eosimias in China 45 million years ago supports the hypothesis, as purported by Ciochon and Etler, that the split between the three major divisions of living primates (i.e. lemurs, tarsiers and anthropoids) occurred even earlier, perhaps in the late Paleocene or early Eocene (see Ciochon and Etler 1994 for details).
The lower jaw depicted here, from Lufeng, Yunnan, was initially attributed to

Paleontology in the News
This is a selection of stories, subject to the following rules. First, I don't guarantee close daily coverage of everything that happens (because I have a job to do apart from maintaining this Web page). Second, the site has to be generally accessible. (Many journals, like Science and Nature , make their pages accessible only to people who have paid a subscription to the written version.) Third, I choose newspapers and news sites that tend to keep their pages accessible for more than two weeks over those that do not. Fourth, to minimize loading time, I take stories off and archive them after a couple of months (see bottom of page for links to archived stories). Fifth, I keep older articles archived for varying lengths of time, depending how important I think they are (or interesting, at least); whether they have been updated or made redundant; and whether the site has dropped them.
