Intro to Holistic Medicine Home Holistic Medicine Search for Spirit Feed the Soul Follow the Heart Give to Your Heart ... Contact Wilson Cheung Illness, disease, aging, physical or mental pain. For many of us this becomes our primary link to our spiritual journey. While many of us may be too busy worrying about our career, a new home, a new car, or other material ventures, an illness of some sort will inevitably touch your life and reshape your priorities. At times you will feel like you can lead the world, but inevitably a humbling event occurs. The most humbling events are the ones that threaten your health. A threat to my wife's health ultimately became our trigger to need to seek answers as to why? What's the purpose of suffering? Why should we exist to inevitably suffer in the end? Why is everyone else much happier, and prosperous? Why does this always happen to us? For Virginia and myself (Wilson), the search for an explanation and cure of Virginia's mysterious physical ailments was the beginning of a journey to find the meaning to things that were making my life more miserable each day. Our search for Virginia's cure began with conventional Western Medicine. Western medicine views your well being as made up of good physical health and good mental health. Physicians and specialists prescribe drugs and perform surgery to counteract physical ailments. While psychiatrists and psychologists use drugs and/or discussion to control harmful thoughts and emotions. Western medicine does acknowledge additional uncontrollable factors like how your attitude and faith influence your recovery from an ailment. It's just that attitude and faith are never thought of as a primary source of healing. At best these things only help in how they may reduce any harmful emotional stress. But even emotional stress itself is largely thought of as mere chemical reactions that can be controlled most effectively with drugs. In conventional Western medicine you are considered a "Patient" more than a "Person." You are remembered mostly for your illnesses than for who you are.

    http://www.vernoncoleman.com/holmed.htm
HOLISTIC MEDICINE History People often talk about ‘holistic medicine’ and ‘holistic practitioners’ as if holism were a speciality like acupuncture or homoeopathy. In fact the word ‘holistic’ describes an approach, an attitude and a philosophy rather than any specific type of medical practice. A registered medical practitioner working as a family doctor or general practitioner can just as easily practise ‘holistic medicine’ as can any practitioner of alternative medicine. The word ‘holistic’ was first introduced by the South African philosopher and statesman Jan Christian Smuts in ‘Holism and Evolution’ (1926). Smuts disapproved of the way that scientists and philosophers tried to analyse people and study them as a collection of separate parts. In his book he suggested that the whole human being is much more than (and quite different to) a collection of physical or emotional parts. The word and the concept lay more or less forgotten until the 1970s when the growth of high-technology medicine led to a revolution among patients and health-care professionals who felt that the modern, aggressive, interventionist approach to healing was quite unsatisfactory. For over half a century doctors had shown tremendous enthusiasm for specialisation. Suddenly there was a widespread feeling that the fragmentation had gone too far. There was also a strong feeling that the ‘fragmentation’ approach did nothing to help doctors deal with the problems produced by reactions between individuals and their environment.

L egend One: The Taoist Cheng San Fung , Master of the Three Peaks, was inspired to create the Taiji Quan form from observing the fighting between a crane and a snake. He noticed the soft movement of the snake was very effective in warding off the attack of the hard strike. Notice how soft the Taiji movement is.
Legend Two: Cheng San Fung, of the Ming dynasty (1600 AD) has a dream in which the immortal warrior taught him the Taiji Quan. After one night of dream learning, he achieved mastery and used the Taiji to defeat the bands of bandits that surrounded his monastery.
Legend Three: Chan village originated the Taiji Quan from their ancestor who was a small Ming general. Upon retirement he created Taiji based on another great Ming General's booklet on the Art of War. This claim gives rise to the idea that the oldest version of Taiji is from the Chan village. Yang Style: It is true that master Yang was a serf with the Chan family. and learned the art secretly until his master died and his widow was the same age as Yang. Master Yang went to Peking (Beijing) to seek his fortune. He was introduced to the imperial family of the Manchu 13th prince. He was hired as the martial instructor for the prince's personal bodyguard. Master Yang used to carry a small spear and was honored with the title of "undefeatableYang". His family was able to pass down the art to the present day. The Chen style is too compact and vigorous and can cause damage to beginners.

We live in a quick fix society, in fact one could say we live in a society addicted to the quick fix. If you gizmo isn't working you want the part or the pill which will make it work, "and don't bother me with the details." However, if the gizmo isn't working, and the basic causes are not identified and dealt with, your thing-a-ma-jig is going down the drain soon, in fact your zorch may have to be removed and replaced with someone else's zorch if you continue on with your present life style. Practitioners of holistic medicine are doctors who understand these principles and are there to assist you in understanding and dealing with the fundamental causes of illness so that healing is a complete experience which will last for the rest of your life. In this article I will deal with some areas that are commonly in need of attention. Life Style This refers to the way you organize your life and focus on your priorities. When you list your priorities, is your health at the top of the list? If it isn't, you are cheating whoever or whatever

Naturopathic doctors (N.D.'s) are primary care practitioners, practising family medicine and address almost all conditions that you would see your medical doctor for. These can range from chronic fatigue, depression, emotional issues, childhood illnesses, degenerative conditions such as arthritis, asthma, heart, immune system, digestive and bowel conditions. We must emphasize however that N.D.'s are trained to look at the whole person not just at the condition itself, which is what sets the profession apart from other health practitioners. In assessing the patient we review the chief concerns of the patient as well as their energy, sleep, body temperature, digestion and the mental emotional spheres. We also ask the patient for recent blood work or tests if already completed or recommend that further assessment may be necessary.

These sites also provide a wealth of information on new perspectives on health and medicine. American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP)

In addition to a standard medical curriculum, the naturopathic physician spends four years training in clinical nutrition, acupuncture, homeopathic medicine, botanical medicine, psychology, and counseling. A naturopathic physician takes rigorous professional board exams in order to be licensed as a primary care general practice physician." This site is rich with information about naturopathic principles, practices, legal status and more. It also links to a search index (hosted by healthy.net) for finding a naturopathic physician.

    TOBACCO TAPE REVIEW
Tom Watkins, Medical Tribune 26:29, October 16, 1985 Relax, Listen to Tape, Stop Smoking. Everything you always wanted your patients to know about smoking but never had time to tell them is the subject of a two-hour package of cassette tapes researched and prepared by Dr. Clancy McKenzie, a Philadelphia psychiatrist in private practice. Billed as the tapes "that will change your smoking habit," they present a litany of medical effects and statistics associated with the use of tobacco. The presentation is given in lay terms without being simplistic and is both straightforward and convincing. The tapes also probe the morals and ethics of an industry that knows its products lead to 350,000 deaths each year in the United States alone. The myths promulgated by that industry (and supported through extensive advertising images that influence children too young to read the Surgeon General's warnings) are carefully dissected by Dr. McKenzie, who calls the tapes his response to "the greatest need in all of medicine today. People are able to use tobacco only by shutting out these facts." Their barriers of rationalization are gently but firmly broken down by separating the myths from reality. Smoking is associated with: Wealth - but wealthy people smoke less than the poor do. Sophistication - but educated people smoke less. Relaxation - but nicotine, a CNS stimulant, produces agitation. Romance - but smoking is unattractive to many people. Popularity - but two-thirds of non-smokers back away from smokers. Women's Lib - but lung cancer rates exceed those for breast cancer.

In an unusual program at Orlando General Hospital, cancer patients seem to be thinking themselves to wellness," ( Florida , April 16, 1989, p. 9). With this intriguing statement, readers of the Orlando Sentinel's Sunday magazine, Florida are introduced to a new cancer treatment program at Orlando General Hospital. The program is formally known as Orlando General's Getting Well Behavioral Medicine Program for Cancer and Chronic Diseases and has at its core the theory that "...the conscious mind can influence various systems in the body normally considered beyond conscious control," (p. 11). Patients in the program attend "regular counseling sessions in personal nutrition, planning diets that exclude substances like caffeine, and they undergo `play therapy' that includes activities like juggling and just having fun for the sake of having fun," (p. 17).

M edicine has come a long way since the early days of bloodletting, humor balancing, and spiritual exorcism. The field has undergone several major revolutions in the course of reaching its present state. Medicine in this country is once more at a crossroads, poised to undergo major changes. Widespread demand to lower the cost of medical treatment, to improve quality, and to deliver decent health care to as many people as possible, have made the current state of American health care a critical one. Always a leader in change, the Duke University Medical Center (DUMC) is playing a major role in influencing the way medicine will be practiced in the future. The spectacular growth experienced by the DUMC over the last several decades has earned it a position of prominence in the national and international medical communities. Ralph Snyderman, M.D., Chancellor for Health Affairs and of the Medical Center and Dean of the Duke University School of Medicine, describes Duke's tremendous progress: "From 1965 to1985, the Medical Center had undergone a lot of growth. A revitalization of the basic sciences took place in the late 60's and early 70's, and then a lot of emphasis from mid 70's to early 80's was placed on building North Hospital. A tremendous amount of energy was put into revitalizing clinical facilities to make for a first rate hospital." These efforts culminated in the opening of Duke Hospital North (see photo at left) in 1981.
