    49. A History Of Mathematics At Rutgers
``A history of mathematics at Rutgers''. F. Cajori, Teaching and historyof mathematics in the United States, Government Printing Office, 1890.
    http://www.math.rutgers.edu/docs/history.html
``A History of Mathematics at Rutgers''
by Charles Weibel (originally written in 1995)
    Contents
Mathematics was present from the very beginning at Rutgers. To illustrate this point, consider the following items. The first math major (DeWitt) helped win the Revolutionary War with his surveying. The first professor at Rutgers was a mathematician (Adrain), and his salary was endowed with a 2-year lottery. The most famous mathematician ever associated with Rutgers was an undergraduate (George Hill). The Land Grant status of Rutgers was due to a mathematician (Murray) and George Cook (of Cook College). Finally, numerous buildings and roads at Rutgers bear the names of people who have taught mathematics here: Freylinghuysen, Taylor, Murray, Van Dyck, Titsworth and Morris. The history of mathematics at Rutgers is bound up with Rutgers' unique history, compared with other American universities. It has been at various times a colonial college, a small private college, a land grant school, a hodge-podge of different colleges, and finally a modern State University. The role of mathematics at Rutgers has been different in each of these eras. Many other branches of the University had their origins in the Mathematics Department or its ancestors. Until 1877, Rutgers had a string of "Professors of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy", whose interests were clearly Mathematics and not Natural Philosophy (Adrain, Strong, Murray and Rockwood). The Chemistry and Physics departments sprang up to augment this position, with the arrival of Lewis Beck (1830) and Francis Van Dyck (1866) to teach courses that had been previously taught together with mathematics. Civil and Mechanical Engineering gradually branched off of Mathematics during the era 1866-1903. The Statistics Department split off in 1952, the Computing Center (now RUCS) in 1963, and the Computer Science Department in 1966. In the 1980's both RUTCOR and DIMACS emerged as separate entitites, largely out of the Mathematics Department.

Women in the history of mathematics
"Mathematics is not only for men" says Patricia Rothman of University College London, author of the booklet "Women in the History of Mathematics from Antiquity to the Nineteenth Century". "From antiquity women have also worked in this field, a fact that is not sufficiently well known", she says. Some years ago while reading "Men in Mathematics" by E.T. Bell , in a chapter entitled "Master and pupil" she came across a woman mathematician as pupil to the master, Weierstrass. The pupil was Sofya Kovalevskaya also winner of the Prix Bordin of the French Academy of Sciences in 1888. Further reading revealed a number of remarkable women mathematicians, and led to the author writing about some of them in this illustrated booklet, which also contains a useful reading list. As well as Kovalevskaya there are a further eight biographies, including a renowned teacher and author in the 5th century, Hypatia of Alexandria; Augusta Ada Lovelace who was for a time associated with Charles Babbage, the inventor of the first computer; and Mary Somerville, after whom Somerville College, Oxford was named.

A Modern History of Blacks in Mathematics On this web page we consider a contemporary history of Blacks in Mathematics , not Who are the greatest Black Mathematicians? (for that click the question). Here you can learn about (and even before ) the first African Americans in the Mathematical Sciences , (for the First African American Women click) The First Africans , and Other Important Events in the past 300 years . For earlier periods in history see the web pages of Mathematics in Ancient Africa . For a history of African Americans in science read Kenneth Manning's article Can History Predict the Future? Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806) is often recognized as the first African American mathematician; however, ex-slave Thomas Fuller 's (1710-1790) and the Nigerian Muhammad ibn Muhammad 's (16-1741) activities predate Benjamin Banneker. None of these men had formal degrees. Charles Reason (1814-1893) was probably the first African American to receive a faculty position in mathematics at a predominantly white institution - Central College in Cortland County, New York. Yale University becomes the first United States of America institution to award a Ph.D. in mathematics.

    Contents
Two introductory segments give an overview of the program. The first outlines some of the important developments in the period from 3000 B.C. to 300 B.C., which culminated with the publication of Euclid's Elements . The second gives an outline of some of the landmark achievements from 300 B.C. up to the events that led to the development of calculus. The remaining segments describe in more detail some of the important highlights on the road to calculus. They discuss number systems developed in different cultures; numerology or number mysticism as practiced by the Pythagoreans; the origin of number theory as an outgrowth of numerology; the Pythagorean Theorem for right triangles and how it led to the discovery of irrational numbers; the golden age of Hellenistic mathematics as it flourished in the ancient city of Alexandria; the multi-cultural search for an understanding of the number pi and the landmark contributions to this effort by Archimedes; how astronomy gave birth to trigonometry; and other developments such as algebra and analytic geometry that eventually led to the calculus. The program also includes some mathematical derivations in animated form: proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem, an new geometric proof of the irrationality of the square root ot two, two methods for calculating the area of a circular disk, and the Archimedes method for estimating pi.
