Hedgehogs
It has been said that no other exotic animal has caught the attention of the public quite like hedgehogs have. Their spines, friendly and curious nature, as well as that ever-smiling expression have endeared them to millions of confessed hedgehog lovers around the globe. Those in Britain, Europe and parts of Africa have long known about the hedgehogs’ charm. British author and illustrator, Beatrix Potter, although most famous for her story of Peter Rabbit, also wrote the wonderful tale of a hedgehog named "Mrs. Tiggy-winkle", a matronly washer-woman. A British wildlife hospital dedicated to rescuing sick and injured hedgehogs is even named after this delightful character. The interest in hedgehogs doesn't end there, though. Until recently, these remarkable little animals were virtually unknown in North America. But now, thanks to the pioneering efforts of breeders, the African Pygmy Hedgehog is now readily available and can be found in the homes of thousands of happy pet owners. "But why", you may ask,"is their such an interest in hedgehogs as pets? Besides having a peaceful and humorous nature, hedgehogs readily lend themselves to just about anyone's lifestyle and schedule. Being diurnal (awake parts of both day and night) just like house cats, nearly everyone can find a time of day in which to enjoy them. They do not require a great deal of room in which to live and their dietary requirements are very easy to meet and, since they are solitary animals by nature they neither require nor want the companionship of another animal.

  • What is a Hedgehog? Hedgehogs are a small, insectivorous (insect eating) mammal that can be found throughout the world. They are native to England, Europe, Africa and Asia. The hedgehog that is now kept as a pet in North America is the Pygmy Hedgehog from Central Africa.
Since there are no native species of hedgehog in either Canada or the United States, many people still mistake the domestic hedgehog for the porcupine - an entirely different and unrelated animal. While porcupine quills are extremely sharp, barbed and very dangerous, the hedgehog quill is smooth and not nearly as sharp. Petting a friendly hedgehog can be compared to petting a hairbrush - bristly, not prickly.

Dogs living in the countryside which come into contact with cats, hedgehogs and otherwild if you have any doubts at all about the health of your pet, take him

    • Your dog should be vaccinated against all the diseases, which can kill him. Parvovirus is a very big killer and highly infectious to other dogs. It is particularly common amongst young pups and older dogs. Make sure your pup does NOT come into contact with unvaccinated animals, or is allowed out of your garden until he has had the second of his first two injections which should be two weeks apart when he is about eight to ten weeks old. After this they should be vaccinated with a BOOSTER every year.
    • DO make sure he is WORMED every 2-3 weeks until he is three months old, then monthly until he is six months old. He can then be wormed once more at one year old, then twice a year for the rest of his life. Animals which are not wormed regularly, have dull coats, pot bellies and generally do not thrive well. They are also a danger to your children's' health!!!!!!!
    • If you have a puppy of less than three months old, he will need feeding four times daily, as much as he can eat. From three months onward he will need to be fed three times a day, which can be cut down to two meals at six months. Young growing dogs need to be fed as much as they need, until they are six to nine months There are many brilliant animal feeds on the market, which suit all your dogs' basic needs. (The dried foods are excellent mixed with a little tinned meat and a dash of water. Make sure he has fresh water available always, especially if he is on the dried foods).
    • Once he is one year old, the feed needs to be monitored so that he does not get too fat. FAT is unhealthy! A fat dog, just like a fat person, is prone to heart disease, bone disease i.e. arthritis and many more illnesses which will shorten his life span. Remember that a lean, fit dog is a healthy dog. Remember too, that table scraps are not an adequate diet on their own. A dog does NOT have the same digestive system as we do. You are doing him no favours by feeding him every time he pleads with those big brown eyes!

    Cages
Where to begin.... There are so many options it's hard to know where to start. If I forget any or you come up with something new, e-mail me and let me know.
    Fish Tanks
Fish tanks are readily available, fairly cheap, and come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. They even come with stands and bases that can make for a very attractive home. However, the absolute minimum (and I do mean minimum) size is a 20-gallon long aquarium. Bigger is definitly better. If you can't do any better, then make sure that your hedgie gets a lot of playtime outside of his cage.
    Rabbit/Guinea Pig Cages
Also available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, they are usually cheaper then fishtanks, and offer more options and moving room. These are what I house a part of my herd in. Keep in mind that if the holes are too big a hedgehog could walk right through the gaps, and if the wire is small enough, they make wonderful ladders. In addition the bottoms and some of the sides will have to be covered with something so that feet and shaving will not fall through. Vinly flooring works nicely, cleans easily, and sometimes you can get scraps, old samples or remnants free or dirt cheap from places that sell flooring.
    Wood Cages
Like the way those nice spaceous wooden rabbit cages look or want to build your own? I would suggest that you don't. For one, many of them are made with cedar wood (a big no no) or have the possibility of splinters. In addition, they are really unsanitary and you're asking for your hedgehog to get sick. Please pick something else.

Contact Us Home Norwich Bulletin - 8/17/2002 Hedgehogs – A Different Kind Of Pet Cute, inquisitive, with an appealing little face – and then you notice the quills. The African Hedgehog is finding its way into the hearts of thousands of North American homes as a family pet. I think the hedgehog is absolutely adorable to look at. While the top of the body is covered with quills, the face and underside are covered with soft fur. When relaxed, the quills will lay flat along the body and feel like stiff, nylon brushes, but when the little critter becomes scared or shy, it pulls itself into a ball with quills extended.
For those of you who think you might want a hedgehog as a pet, there are many things to consider before you make that initial purchase, starting with making sure it’s legal in your state to own one. Although pet hedgehogs are domestically raised (as are pet ferrets), they are still considered exotic pets. Once you call your local animal control officer and ascertain that it is legal to own a hedgehog, you can begin thinking about the type of hedgehog you want.
The normal color you are most likely to find at a pet store is salt and pepper, with white quills banded in black. If you purchase your hedgehog from a breeder, you may be able to find a cinnamon, cream, albino or spotted hedgehog.

Little prickly characters Hedgehogs might be prickly creatures, but they are far nicer little animals than many people realise. They are intelligent and sociable, and they are nocturnal, which means that they are liveliest at night and sleep for most of the day. And because they live on molluscs and insects like slugs, snails, grass grubs and earwigs, they are a real asset in the garden. Most hedgehogs are healthy, and they do not carry diseases that can spread to humans. If a hedgehog has obviously got skin sores or scaly areas it could have hedgehog mange. This is a hedgehog-only type disease that does not spread to other species. Hedgehogs rarely carry fleas (there are no hedgehog fleas in NZ), but they occasionally get ringworm, which causes loss of prickles and scaly patches, and this could spread to other animals. Hedgehogs that have had skin injuries are very susceptible to the horrible disease flystrike, because they are not able to get away from blowflies as easily as other animals. How do you feed a hedgehog?
