Heat Waves By Andrew O. Have you ever heard about a heat wave and wondered what it was? Are you hearing or reading about heat waves in the Middle East? If you do not know what heat waves are, than you better read this report. It could be the difference between life and death. Contrary to some beliefs, heat waves are not just one day of hot weather. Heat waves are deadly and can last for weeks. People have died because they did not know about heat waves and failed to prepare for them. Heat waves can effect you wherever you live, so read this report. It could save your life. Heat waves are waves of thermal radiation that affect 10 states or more with a 90 degrees plus temperature for two days or more. They are caused by humid conditions and when a "dome" of high atmospheric pressure traps damp air near the ground. Temperatures can become hot enough to kill a person. Heat waves can have many effects on humans. Among them are: sunburn; heat cramps; heat exhaustion; heat stroke; and death. These effects are caused by over exposure to the sun or heat. Heat kills by pushing the body to its limits. In nature heat waves can cause droughts. In a normal year approximately 175 Americans die. The most likely people to die are children and sick or overweight people. Men are more likely to die than women because men sweat more and are more quickly dehydrated. You are probably wondering: how can I avoid these effects? Well, here are some tips:

HEAT WAVES
Heat can affect anyone. However, it is more likely to affect young children, elderly people, and people with health problems. For instance, people with a medical condition that causes poor blood circulation and those who take medications to get rid of water from the body (diuretics) or for certain skin conditions may be more susceptible. Consult with a physician if you have any questions about how your medication may affect your ability to tolerate heat. It is important to know the terms used to describe heat wave conditions. They are: Heat wave – prolonged period of excessive heat and humidity. Heat Index – a number in degrees Fahrenheit that tells how hot it really feels when relative humidity is added to the actual air temperature. Exposure to full sunshine can increase the heat index by 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Preparation for a heat wave is the best method for minimizing injury or illness during one. Follow these important steps to prepare yourself and your family for a heat wave.
  • Purchase a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Weather Radio with a battery backup and tone-alert feature. A NOAA (pronounced "Noah") radio will automatically alert you when a Heat Wave Warning has been issued. Also purchase a battery-powered commercial radio and extra batteries as well.

The hidden, human cost of heat waves
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) Every year, natural disasters wreak havoc in the United States, producing dramatic scenes and billions of dollars in damages. But while major storms and earthquakes may garner more headlines and incur heavier financial losses, a less obvious weather phenomenon heat waves produce among the highest human costs of all such disasters. Statistics gathered by the World Health Organization show that heat waves account for the two top deadliest weather-related disasters in the United States over the last decade and three of the top five. While the financial damage from a heat wave may not be as high or as evident as that caused by a hurricane or earthquake, high temperatures do come at a cost. For instance, the WHO said government agencies spent $3.7 billion on a heat wave that struck pockets of the country in summer 1998. Top 10 deadliest weather-related phenomena in U.S. from 1990-2000

by Jacob G. Hornberger July 1998 To relieve the suffering in the drought-stricken counties of Texas, Congress passed an appropriations bill, but it was vetoed by the president. In his veto message, the president stated: "I can find no warrant for such an appropriation in the Constitution, and I do not believe that the power and duty of the General Government ought to be extended to the relief of individual suffering which is in no manner properly related to the public service or benefit…. The friendliness and charity of our countrymen can always be relied upon to relieve their fellow-citizens in misfortune. This has been repeatedly and quite lately demonstrated. Federal aid in such cases encourages the expectation of paternal care on the part of the Government and weakens the sturdiness of our national character, while it prevents the indulgence among our people of that kindly sentiment and conduct which strengthens the bonds of a common brotherhood." The year was 1887 and the president was Democrat Grover Cleveland.

Are You Ready for a Heat Wave?
Here's what you can do to prepare yourself and your family. Know What These Terms Mean...
  • Heat wave: prolonged period of excessive heat and humidity. The National Weather Service steps up its procedures to alert the public during these periods of excessive heat and humidity. Heat index: A number in degrees Fahrenheit that tells how hot it really feels when relative humidity is added to the actual air temperature. Exposure to full sunshine can increase the heat index by 15 degrees F. Heat cramps: Heat cramps are muscular pains and spasms due to heavy exertion. They usually involve the abdominal muscles or legs. It is generally thought that the loss of water from heavy sweating causes the cramps. Heat exhaustion: Heat exhaustion typically occurs when people exercise heavily or work in a warm humid place where body fluids are lost through heavy sweating. Blood flow to the skin increases, causing blood flow to decrease to the vital organs. This results in a form of mild shock. If not treated, the victim's condition will worsen. Body temperature will keep rising and the victim may suffer heat stroke. Heatstroke: Heatstroke is life-threatening. The victim's temperature control system, which produces sweating to cool the body, stops working. The body temperature can rise so high that brain damage and death may result if the body is not cooled quickly.

Will the Big Apple Live up to its Name? Dr. Lee M. Miringoff Dr. Barbara L. Carvalho The summer heat waves are showing up on schedule, but there continues to be little sizzle from the NYC mayoral contest this election season. The lack of voter interest is surprising. With Rudy Giuliani forced to the sidelines by term limits, the race is wide open. This should engender greater voter response. New Yorkers seem more concerned about the Yankees pitching rotation than they are about the next occupant of City Hall. Certainly, there is plenty for voters to choose from. The field of mayoral wannabes includes individuals with long careers in public service and a successful businessman. Campaign 2001 is not amateur hour. A recent Marist Poll shows, on the Democratic side, one-third of potential primary voters are undecided. Among voters who say they prefer a Democratic candidate, one-third tell us they might vote differently on primary day. On the GOP side, neither Michael Bloomberg nor Herman Badillo has created the kind of excitement so far that they must eventually arouse in a town where there are five Democrats for every Republican. There are a grab-bag of reasons to account for the lack of political passion. The mayor’s race is sandwiched on the one hand between the mega US Senate campaign 2000 first between Hillary and Hillary, than between Hillary and Rudy, then between Rudy and Rudy, and finally, between Hillary and Rick. On the other hand, the New York State governor’s race in 2002 is already stirring with Andrew Cuomo and Carl McCall in a Democratic matchup to oppose George Pataki in the general election. (Not to mention voter fatigue from the presidential election that went into extra innings).

Heat Waves by Janelle Denison, October 2001, Series Romance
Harlequin Blaze #12, $4.50, ISBN #0-373-79016-3 Grade: B+ Sensuality: Hot
Being a sometime fan of the Temptation Blaze sub-series, I was eager to try the new longer-and-reportedly-hotter Blaze books, and jumped at the chance to review Janelle Denison's first entry in the new line. I had my doubts about them being "hotter," though, because I never thought the Blaze Temptations were any wilder than the regular Temptations. I'm thrilled to report that Heat Waves lives up to the "hotter" rumors (and then some) and as a bonus it features two likable leads. If this story is any indication of the direction of this line I may just buy them all! Ian Carlisle, CEO of an investment firm, is wealthy, handsome, and very lonesome. After his fiancée died in a terrible accident years earlier, he turned his energies towards his work. His has become a lonely existence. One hot summer night he stumbles across a sexy radio talk show that reawakens his senses and has him reaching for the phone to share in the provocative discussions. Erica McCree is the host of "Heat Waves," a radio talk show devoted to sex. She poses a titillating question each night and her listeners call in and spill their sexual secrets and desires. Erica purposely reveals very little of herself (her own sex life is seriously lacking) until a nightly caller named Ian changes everything. Their witty, sexy banter quickly boosts ratings and both look forward to their heated conversations. When Ian asks Erica on a real life date while they're on the air she agrees, fearing a drop in ratings if she turns him down. She accepts only after her listeners agree that it is a good idea. Since odds are high he's a kook or a hairy old perverted gnome, she makes it a double date and hopes for the best.

Deutscher Wetterdienst, Business Unit Human Biometeorology , Freiburg, Germany This study aims to assess the impacts of extreme thermal events on human health under current and future climate conditions. Due to global climate change air temperatures are expected to rise and with it heat waves are expected to be more frequent. Wagner (1996) found out that the probability of extreme temperature events is more sensitive to changes in the variability of climate than to changes in its average. Several studies show a significant relationship between thermal environment and mortality (e.g. Laschewski Jendritzky , 2002). This relationship is more pronounced during the summer months. As humans are adapted to the mean climate they live in, this study focuses on the impacts of heat waves on human health, expressed by human mortality. Heat waves are extreme thermal events that are linked to cardiovascular, respiratory, and other diseases.
Daily mortality data is available for several regions in Europe (e.g.

How do heat waves form? Science Many climate change scenarios project more prolonged and intense heat waves. In the summers of 1995 and 1998, increased deaths from heat waves occurred across the world from India to the United States. Two aspects of climate change enhance mortality (death) during heat waves: 1) the lack of relief at night, and 2) increased humidity, raising the heat index. This century, evaporation from warm ocean surfaces has increased the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere at any given time, increasing humidity, clouds and rain intensity, and enhancing the greenhouse effect. In combination with coastal pollution, ocean warming and flooding events can promote the proliferation of toxic “red tides” and may encourage diseases, such as cholera, that reside in the plankton. “Brown tides,” affecting seagrasses and shellfish, are persistent in many areas with local pollution and warming. Humans, marine mammals and seabirds are all suffering from the increased intensity, duration and extent of harmful algal blooms. Massive fish kills and human neurological symptoms (memory loss) have resulted from Pfeisteria piscida, a toxic alga associated with wastes, warming (summer) and heavy rains. Of utmost concern are the spreading diseases of coral reefs and seagrass beds, habitats on which other marine life depends. Global warming is not acting in isolation. It comes in addition to existing environmental stresses such as acid rain and air pollution, and largely from the same sources: burning fossil fuels, especially coal and oil. The aggregate impact of air pollution and climate change can increase respiratory diseases such as asthma and bronchitis. These additive and/or synergistic effects can occur in a variety of ways:
