Information on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, its symptoms and treatment.

CATS AND HEART DISEASE WHAT IS HCM? SYMPTOMS DIAGNOSIS Heart disease in felines usually comprises various forms of a defective heart muscle, or cardiomyopathy (cardio = heart, myo = muscle, pathy = disease).
Felines most commonly develop one of three different types:
DCM (Dialated Cardiomyopathy) leads to enlarged heart chambers due to a weakning of the heart muscle, and was relatively common until quite recently. Today it is rarely seen thanks to the adequate addition of Taurine in most main brands of cat food.
RCM (Restrictive Cardiomyopathy) is a form akin to HCM, and is often seen in older cats. It manifests itself in progressively poorer heart function with reduced ability to pump.
This leads to an accumulation of blood in the heart, and an enlargement of the atrium.
By far the most common type of heart disease in felines is HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy).
The rest of this article with deal mainly with HCM.
WHAT IS HCM? HCM, or Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, is a heart disorder in which the left wall of the heart grows and thickens. (Hypertrophic = thickening)

Linus Pauling lectures on Vitamin C and Heart Disease
August 13, 1993
By Michael Wooldridge, MAWooldridge@lbl.gov One of the great scientific mavericks of this century spoke at LBL August 10, 1993 at a special seminar hosted by the Life Sciences Division's Lipoprotein and Atherosclerosis Group. Linus Pauling, two-time Nobel laureate and the world's foremost vitamin C proponent, entertained an overflow crowd in the Bldg. 66 auditorium with a talk on Vitamin C and Heart Disease. The lively 92-year-old first gave a candid history of how he came to take up the vitamin C cause. He was introduced to the subject by biochemist Irwin Stone in 1966. Five years later, he would pen "Vitamin C and the Common Cold," and then boldly go on to champion vitamin C as a fighter of more serious diseases such as cancer. According to Pauling, the vitamin's versatility in illness prevention arises from its role in the manufacture of collagen, the protein that gives shape to connective tissues and strength to skin and blood vessels. One of the great misfortunes of human evolution, Pauling explained, was when our human ancestors lost their ability to manufacture vitamin C. Pauling thinks the trait was probably discarded at a time when our ancestors had a diet of vitamin-rich plants and didn't need to produce the vitamin themselves. This left today's primates (including humans) as one of the few groups of animals that must get the vitamin through the diet.

Heart Disease Cancer ... by Greg Caton, President, Lumen Foods Heart Disease Preventive Compounds Cancer Preventive Compounds Read the most updated nutritional findings on soy protein , written by world-renowned phytopharmacologist, Dr. Suzanne Paxton and sponsored by Lumen Foods.
In 1985 when I wrote the Lumen book, there was already a large body of data connecting both heart disease and a wide range of cancers to high rates of meat consumption. The sixth chapter of that book alone cited over 190 references, most of which were related to epidemiological correlations between reduced meat consumption and lower rates of cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, and other degenerative diseases that are rampant in the West. In the 10 years since, there have been numerous studies that go beyond merely substantiating the benefits of a "meatless diet." Soy protein products, such as Heartline Meatless Meats and Heaven on Earth Fat Free Milk Replacer are finally being noticed for the value of their soybean protein protein which imparts cholesterol and triglyeride lowering properties in its own right.

Recommendations References Any advice about the consumption of alcohol must take into account not only the complex relation between alcohol and cardiovascular disease but also the well-known association of heavy consumption of alcohol with a large number of health risks. One approach would be to recommend no consumption of alcohol. However, a large number of recent observational studies have consistently demonstrated a reduction in coronary heart disease (CHD) with moderate consumption of alcohol.

Study links baldness, heart disease
Researchers say the more hair men lose, the greater their cardiac risk
By John Fauber
of the Journal Sentinel staff Last Updated: Jan. 24, 2000 So, a middle-aged man is talking to his doctor, and the doctor says, "You're bald." The patient says, "If you don't mind, I'd like a second opinion." The doctor says, "OK, you've got a bad heart, too." What sounds like a joke from a Rodney Dangerfield routine actually is one of the findings published today from the ongoing Physicians' Health Study, conducted by researchers at Harvard Medical School. The study found that men with male pattern baldness may be at increased risk for heart disease. Published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, a journal of the American Medical Association, the study analyzed baldness and heart disease among 22,071 men ages 40 to 84.

Heart Disease Program
Project Information
Group: Clinical Decision Making Group Project Leader: Bill Long wjl@mit.edu Purpose: To assist physicians in the diagnosis of patients with cardiac symptoms, focusing on hemodynamic dysfunction. Description: For predicting the effects of therapy we have developed a mechanism that uses equations for the hemodynamic relationships and a signal flow technique to calculate the likely quantitative steady-state change for all parameters given changes in therapies (or other parameter changes). This mechanism effectively captures the hemodynamic effects of the therapies on which it has been tested for a variety of pathophysiologic conditions.

Several theories exist to explain the link between periodontal disease and heart disease. One theory is that oral bacteria can affect the heart when they enter the blood stream, attaching to fatty plaques in the coronary arteries (heart blood vessels) and contributing to clot formation. Coronary artery disease is characterized by a thickening of the walls of the coronary arteries due to the buildup of fatty proteins. Blood clots can obstruct normal blood flow, restricting the amount of nutrients and oxygen required for the heart to function properly. This may lead to heart attacks. Another possibility is that the inflammation caused by periodontal disease increases plaque build up, which may contribute to swelling of the arteries.
