Tips On How To Have A Healthy Heart If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, what would it take to avoid a heart surgeon? Would you believe a good vitamin + mineral supplement ? Add to that some omega-3 oil (canola, flax, fish) and a diet high in fiber but low in processed foods and hydrogenation hardened fat. Also, maintain a good lifestyle (don't smoke, control weight, some exercise and manage stress well) and you will improve your general health and prevent or help heart disease.
This not-for-profit public interest site looks at the food, supplement and prevention side of the picture because of my long-term interest in nutritional research. Nutrition is my interest, not my job, so this site doesn't generate money or sell anything. You'll find tips and info that are likely to improve your health, your "distance to disease". So what's a healthy diet? Science shows that it is a varied diet of relatively unprocessed foods that include veggies, whole fruits, (brown) rice, and grains that retain part of their original kernel- structure . Those are the foods that became scarce in Western diets. If you can't recognize part of the original food, the item is processed or refined.

Why a Type 2 Diabetes Page in a Heart-Health Site? Well, both are related to nutrition and both can be prevented or helped by the same foods and supplements. Type 2 diabetes is preceded by decades of slowly increasing insulin, then blood sugar, and most often weight. This is when prevention is very effective -but there come a point when insulin production permanently breaks down. Smart nutrition can first prevent overweight and diabetes , and eventually heart disease Both diseases are epidemic with 1 in 13 Americans having developed adult diabetes. Of those, most will develop heart, kidney, nerve and blood vessel diseases. Other countries are similarly affected and rates are skyrocketing. With later-in-life diabetes, you are on an accelerating and eventually one-way track to heart disease. What makes a diabetic? Simply put: when on 2 occasions your morning (fasting) blood sugar ( plasma glucose) is over 126 mg/dL (7 mmol/L). Another measure is when, 2 hours after taking a dose of glucose, the blood level is still above 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L), with above 140 (7.8)

General Illness Information
Common Name:
Coronary Artery Disease Medical Term:
Ischemic Heart Disease Description: Coronary artery disease is a condition in which fatty deposits (atheroma) accumulate in the cells lining the wall of the coronary arteries. These fatty deposits build up gradually and irregularly in the large branches of the two main coronary arteries which encircle the heart and are the main source of its blood supply. This process is called atherosclerosis which leads to narrowing or hardening of the blood vessels supplying blood to the heart muscle (the coronary arteries ).This results in ischemia ( inability to provide adequate oxygen) to heart muscle and this can cause damage to the heart muscle . Complete occlusion of the blood vessel leads to a heart attack (myocardial infarction). In the United States , cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among both sexes, and coronary artery disease is the commonest cause of cardiovascular disease.

Heart Disease and Diet
Heart disease is by far America's number one killer. SUDDEN DEATH is its most common first symptom. Sadly, one out of every three Americans is at high risk and most don't even know it. American Heart Association recommends a "balanced diet" and says: "When eaten on a regular basis as part of a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet, soluble fiber has been shown to help lower blood cholesterol."
The Realities of Getting a "Balanced Diet"
What are the challenges to a healthy diet? People today are typically crisis managers. We don't take steps to ensure good health until it is too late. Probably the major challenge to a better diet is inconvenience. Snacks and processed foods are convenient. Fruits and vegetables often need refrigeration and preparation. Try ordering carrot sticks or broccoli the next time you're in your favorite fast-food restaurant. To get the recommended 25 to 35 grams of fiber per day probably means you need a supplement. But be label conscious. Major requirements to look for in a high fiber supplement are that it is low calorie, from multiple fiber sources, and contains no saturated fat. Cost is also a factor. A WSDF supplement should cost no more than the snacks or other processed foods it is (hopefully) replacing in your diet, i.e. $2.00 to $3.00 per day. Too low a price can mean low quality and/or untested fiber sources. Taste is important too.

Reversing Heart Disease with Diet
T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D. I would like to introduce you to my friend Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., a man you will be hearing a lot more about in coming years. Having won a gold medal (Yale Crew team) in the 1956 Olympics, Dr. Esselstyn quickly advanced to a distinguished career in surgery at the renowned Cleveland Clinic Foundation. In 1985, when drugs were considered the treatment of choice for heart patients (as they mostly still are), Dr. Esselstyn embarked on a revolutionary course of action. The results of his investigation are being made available here for the first time to the larger public, thanks to Dr. Esselstyn's gracious sharing of his pre-publication research findings.
His story is rather like that of Professor Dean Ornish, who is on our Advisory Board, and who convincingly showed that heart disease could be reversed in seriously ill heart patients when they used a low-fat diet, exercised, and managed their stress. Dr. Esselstyn's findings contribute some important new information to the Ornish study.
Before I get to the research findings, however, it's important to remember where we were 10 years ago. Doctors believed that by the time chest pains or a heart attack had occurred due to the blocking of vital blood vessels by cholesterol deposits, patients had absolutely no hope of ever again having a healthy heart. Their options: open-heart surgery, a lifetime of cholesterol-lowering drugs, or death. Scientific consensus held that diet could, at best, decrease blood cholesterol by only about 10ì20%, an effect not considered substantial enough for disease prevention.

Report: Low-fat diets may increase risk of heart disease
August 21, 1997
Web posted at: 3:08 p.m. EDT (1908 GMT) BOSTON (CNN) A low-fat diet may increase the risk of coronary heart disease by reducing the amount of "good" cholesterol in the bloodstream, a group of doctors said in this week's New England Journal of Medicine. The doctors reached their conclusions after analyzing common dietary advice that suggests replacing foods high in total or saturated fat and cholesterol with high-carbohydrate foods such as pasta, potatoes, rice and bread. "One of the problems with a low-fat diet is that it actually drives down the good cholesterol the HDL in our blood (and that) ... will probably increase the risk of heart disease," said Dr. Walter Willett of the Harvard School of Public Health, who contributed to the article. The report said high-carbohydrate diets result in the lowering of bad cholesterol, known as LDL, as well as the body's much-needed HDL cholesterol levels. "Diets that lower HDL cholesterol levels must be viewed with concern," the doctors wrote. If a person wants to lose weight, Willett and his colleagues suggest reducing consumption of fat from dairy products, meats and partially hydrogenated oils and eat less sugar and highly refined starch.
