Preparation time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 30 minutes Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tbsp. sugar
2 tbsp. butter, chilled 3 tbsp. chopped walnuts 3 tbsp. raspberry jam Cooking Instructions: 1. In a medium bowl, stir the flour and sugar together. Using a pastry blender or two knives, cut in the chilled butter until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Stir in the cottage cheese and gather the dough into a ball. Knead the dough a few times in the bowl and cover it loosely. Chill for one hour. This recipe can be made ahead at this point and stored overnight in the refrigerator before baking. 2. Combine the raisins and walnuts on your cutting board and chop them finely. Transfer the mixture to a small bowl and stir in the cinnamon and vanilla.

Snacking is a very important part of a person's day. Your body needs a boost between meals, and selecting the right foods to fuel your body makes a huge difference. When you are choosing a snack you should put some time and thought into it just as you would when planning any meal. You should snack on foods that re-energize and satisfy you until your next big meal. "How do I get energy and satisfaction out of a snack?"
Go for foods with substance! Accessible, easy to prepare foods that are healthy are available as alternatives to soft drinks, candy and chips. Choose a grain and fruit, or grain and protein source, or all three together. Together the combination will help keep you satisfied longer. Protein takes longer to digest than a simple carbohydrate (like a very sugary food, such as candy), and as a result keeps your energy level maintained. The fiber in the complex carbohydrate group also keeps you feeling full. Like protein, a complex carbohydrate takes longer for your body to digest, which helps maintain energy levels longer.   • 2 teaspoon toasted wheat germ
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup sesame seeds
  • rind of 1 lemon
  • 12 teaspoon butter or margarine
  • 1/2 cup ground walnuts
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Combine all the ingredients. Knead until thoroughly blended. Divide into 6 parts. Roll each into a log. Wrap loosely in wax paper. Freeze. When needed, thaw and slice into 1/2-inch thick slices (across roll). Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Place cookies on an ungreased cookie pan. Bake about 12 minutes. Makes 6-8 cookies per roll.

Sugar contributes to the formation of cavities. Frequency of eating sugary foods increases the risk of tooth decay.
Every time a food containing sugar is eaten, an acid attack begins. Acid destroys the enamel thus causing cavities.

An acid attack may last about 20 minutes. Therefore, the frequent intake of sweets causes the most damage. The physical form of the food effects the length of the acid attack. Sticky sweets remain on tooth surfaces for prolonged periods of time, resulting in repeated or longer duration acid attack. Activities

Ask me about fund raisers for your school! From the Author I was raised as the eldest of six children and as a helper in our family day-care center. We were all brought up in a very health conscious environment. Seaweed Soup, steamed organic vegetables from our garden, and fresh river trout were not uncommon at our table. My parents had great motives, and eventually taught me to love these foods (or at least respect them). But many a child’s plate went unfinished because we, as most children, did not fully understand good nutrition, nor did we care about it! All we knew was that certain foods did not taste good at all! Today’s kids are taught as soon as they’re in kindergarten about the important food pyramid and the importance of good nutrition for growing bodies. I, as a parent, am thankful for this, because the values I am teaching my four children are being reinforced by the school system. As good as this sounds, however, I have found that this health education has not changed my kids’ taste buds!
