How Much Do You Really Know About Alcohol
by Aristotle I thought it would be fitting to start out the new month by writing about alcohol. Not because it just popped into my head, but because it is National Alcohol Awareness Month and well, at this age, many of you are experimenting with it. While I can't tell you not to try alcohol (I would encourage you not to try it until you are of legal age), I can give you the information you need to make the responsible decisions. Photo: Dan R. Aronson, courtesy of Environment Matters Consider these startling facts:
  • The global burden of ill-health is borne mostly by people in developing countries. The emerging and reemerging environmentally mediated diseases that threaten humanity are most rampant. The diseases responsible for a large proportion of this ill-health are environmentally mediated. The worst pollution conditions - urban and rural, public and occupational - are in developing countries. The most rapid growth of environmental pollution is in developing countries. The populations most vulnerable to global environmental change are in developing countries.
The HED Program A unique,  interdisciplinary, campuswide program based in the School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley Program Objectives Helping people in developing countries  achieve health, reach a reasonable level of well-being, and stabilize populations, while at the same time protecting the local, community, and global environments, are among the most  compelling and complicated challenges facing the world community. "The objective of the HED program is to bring an international group of students together to learn how to meet  this important set of challenges."

Health, environment and society
WHO recognizes the link between poverty and ill health. Environmental risks follow the poor. Hazardous facilities are located in the areas with least resistance, such as the poor or minority communities, and your position in society determines the air you breathe, the food you eat, and the water you drink.  Such differences exist not only between the social groups within countries but also between countries. Thus the least affluent countries get the biggest share of environmental risks. The way people think about and perceive environmental hazards is important for decision-making about environment and health. Policies, programmes and actions about environmental health problems are more likely to be successful if they are based on the expectations of the target communities and are addressed to those most in need.
