Health, Environment and
Sustainable Development
A Learning Opportunity for All Rationale of the Supercourse
Quality of the environment is crucial for human health. Environmental hazards lead to the adverse health effects, while a sound environment can support or enable health. It has become clear that health and environment must be understood within the context of social and economic development, which was stressed especially in the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992. Investing in improvement to people's health and their environment is a prerequisite for sustainable development.

THE GAS CAP One of the largest sources of controllable man-made evaporative emissions in the world, with over 1 million gallons of gasoline vaporized daily in the US alone. Period. Click here to review the September 2000 article from the SAE's Service Technical Society Magazine which reaffirms these very disturbing breaches of basic engineering principles.
Studies designed and approved by the EPA confirm over 1 million gallons of gasoline are vaporized daily in the US alone. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has stated that a loose or missing gas cap is a serious fire hazard. The proper use of a gas cap is absolutely essential to the safe use of a vehicle. This critical safety device has been left to discretionary use by the general public. It is being abused as we speak at service stations worldwide as driver's fill up their gas tanks. As many as 17% of these drivers leave their gas caps loose enough that they serve no purpose, presenting an immediate health, environment and safety issue. An article printed in the September 2000 article of the Society of Automotive Engineer's affiliate Service Tech Society Magazine reaffirms these very disturbing breaches of basic engineering principles. This same article has also confirmed the design and test criterion for gas caps is another serious item in need of review. Click
