Symposium on Aging and Health: Environment, Work and Behavior
September 14-15, 2000
IMPORTANT: Registration is now closed; all available slots have been filled.
The Department of Environmental Health at the Harvard School of Public Health will host “Aging and Health: An International Symposium” at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cambridge, Massachusetts on September 14-15, 2000. Designed to stimulate discussion among researchers, practitioners, and students concerned with safe and healthy aging, this important event will recognize the fastest growing segment of our society—our elderly—by presenting key scientific research in healthy aging. Our goal is to develop a new paradigm for healthy aging for the 21st century and publish recommendations for innovative approaches to promote healthy aging. People are living longer. In the United States alone there are more than 34 million adults aged 65 and over. Estimates suggest that by 2030 this population of older adults will nearly double. These individuals may have 30 post-retirement years to enjoy. However, they also will have special needs with respect to their living and working environments. They will significantly impact medical care systems and public policy in areas such as social security and Medicare. In an effort to bring to the forefront important issues confronting the elderly, the Aging and Health Symposium will present research on the impacts of the new population demographics, elder labor, defining healthy aging, and elder housing.

UA Seeks to Build Healthy Environment as Student-Centered Research University
UA Seeks to Build Healthy Environment We seek to build an academic, social and physical environment that will nurture mutual respect, friendliness, inclusiveness, and personal growth. Promoting health of the mind, body and spirit is at the heart of those endeavors. Currently, our university is the only SEC school located in a city with no restrictions on weekday and Saturday bar hours . We know we can do better. Research reports in the spring issue of the Journal of American College Health show that most alcohol and drug education programs of the past have failed miserably. One promising research finding, however, looks at the value of state and local control policies and their enforcement. Colleges in states that enact and enforce more comprehensive laws restricting underage drinking and high volume sales of alcohol at low prices have lower rates of binge drinking.

Pollution takes a toll on human health, and there is increasing evidence of interation among large-scale environmental, development, and demographic changes with human disease. The Precautionary Principle . We must act on facts, and on the most accurate interpretation of them, using the best scientific information. . . . Where the state of the health of the people is at stake, the risks can be so high and the costs of corrective action so great, that prevention is better than cure. . . . Where there are significant risks of damage to the public health, we should be prepared to take action to diminish those risks even when the scientific knowledge is not conclusive, if the balance of likely costs and benefits justifies it.

Internships at CHEJ The Center For Health, Environment and Justice (CHEJ) was founded in 1981, as the Citizens Clearinghouse for Hazardous Waste, by Lois Gibbs, the community leader at Love Canal. CHEJ was formed to meet the urgent need for support and technical assistance by people struggling for environmental justice across the country. Because CHEJ is uniquely different from traditional environmental efforts, our philosophy is to teach and empower by helping grassroots groups and individuals (as well as interns) build upon their strengths. Through our organizing, leadership development, research and technical assistance, we empower individuals with skills and information to make sound judgements and become part of the political decision making process to protect health and our natural resources. Hands-On "Work/Learn" Program Specifics: Interns work on a variety of topics such as environmental racism, children and toxics, non-profit management, fundraising, incineration and landfills, sludge disposal, corporate greenwashing and medical waste incineration. In addition to working on special projects, interns will gain insight into the complexities of environmental issues that involve many different players, an appreciation of science for the public interest, the importance of data in advocacy and a respect for the power of informed citizens. Interns are given tasks to match their interests, skills and background with CHEJ's need, and are directed by a staff person in the same area of interest.
