Published Works and Works in Preparation
"My Socratic Oath as a Faculty Member" 1. General Introduction
I was hired at Macalester as Director of the Environmental Studies Program in June 1998. I was given the mandate that my first priority was to provide the necessary leadership to the Program so it can become one of the top Environmental Studies (ES) Programs in the country. Despite the fact the Macalester’s ES program had been created in 1972 (Romero et al. 2000), it had always been someone else’s second job and, consequently, it was not different from many other similar programs in the U.S., i.e., a cluster of courses from many disciplines with only one unifying course, the Senior Seminar. With the advice and consent of the Environmental Studies Coordinating Committee, I devised a strategy built on three major components:
  • Development of a strong research program based on both my previous work in different areas of the natural sciences and new lines of research.
  • 59. National Governors Association

The time has passed quickly ... but much has been done, including the selection of my cabinet. Before introducing our new directors, I want to thank the 150 volunteers who served on our 13 search committees. These citizens studied thick stacks of resumes, conducted many extensive interviews, and narrowed each search to a short list of candidates.
