Signed into law: January 10, 2002 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Impact Aid – $39.52 million

Hawaii's Impact Aid funding is part of a larger amount recommended by the Congress for Impact Aid programs nationwide. Hawaii's allocation represents a nearly $10 million increase from funds the state received last year. The programs provide support to school districts with students who are children of members of the armed forces and federal government employees. (FY01: $30.4 million) Native Hawaiian Education – $30.5 million
The Congress approved $30.5 million for Native Hawaiian education programs that develop curricula for students of all levels, train and recruit teachers, and support education councils statewide. The funding is a $2.5 million increase over the amount appropriated in Fiscal Year 2001. The education programs began in 1988 and were established by the Native Hawaiian Education Act, which seeks to raise the educational status of Hawaii's indigenous people. Senator Inouye sponsored this legislation. A portion of the increase will be used to "co-locate" or undertake construction improvements and repairs at public schools with high percentages of Native Hawaiian children. (FY01: $28 million) Title III, Strengthening Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions – $3.25 million

Review of Charter School Legislation Provisions Related to Students with Disabilities, September 1998
General Legislative Provisions
This first part of the review examines statutory provisions that have implications for, but do not necessarily address directly, students with disabilities or special education. Various provisions in state statutes grant charter schools varying levels of authority to govern themselves and to make decisions regarding the operation of the schools, including decisions related to personnel, curriculum, and expenditures. The extent of a charter school's operational autonomy will have an impact on how special education programs are implemented in these schools. As described in the following paragraphs, statutory provisions that give higher levels of autonomy include ones that allow or require charter schools to (1) operate independent from local school districts, (2) make their own personnel decisions, (3) be exempt from state and district education laws and regulations, (4) assume liability for their actions, and (5) receive their funding directly from the state. Independence from districts.

Students may take distributed learning courses through various modalities: Online Courses. Courses taught over the internet are offered to UH-West O`ahu students on O`ahu and on the neighbor islands.
To take one of these courses, students must have a WebCT account . The following handbook shows students how to create a WebCT account.
Before registering for any WebCT online course at UH-West O`ahu, students must first take the UHWO Online Course Orientation. A WebCT account is necessary to access the Orientation.
Priority for seats in most online courses will be given to neighbor island students because the current degree and certificate programs using the Internet are designed primarily for neighbor island students. Some seats, however, will be available in online courses for students on O`ahu.
